The man knows management, and running a board, and running a football club. Regardless of whether you liked what he did with political power, he knows how to do it.

I'm not sure the AFL would be happy.

Also, if he isn't a member, he better sign up this week because I'm not sure you can sign up as a member the week before the AGM and jump on a ticket.

That's getting Melbourne people in the wrong positions, the paid positions and listening to some BS artists like Lyon. Jimmy had the passion but he made a lot of mistakes and got too involved in areas he shouldn't have.

Get the right people like Jackson in, get the right football people in with real experience and get a president with real passion who lets people do what they are paid to do and stands up for the club because he loves the club. Like what Costa did...you can't transfer this passion, it comes from a lifetime of support not an easy headline.

Paid positions are different...most Geelong people didn't have a problem with Bomber or Scott as coaches, nor a problem with an Hawthorn supporter ex Melbourne player, WC boss as CEO but it was driven by Frank Coster's passion for Geelong and his football club.

I know we've copped some big beatings over the last few years but too many of you are punch drunk, you've lost your marbles if you want Jeff as president.

Ox and Garry are probably the closest people we have to Eddie or Jeff but as we know Garry's to bussy and Ox probably doesn't have the nous to be a club president.

I'd be willing to listen to what Jeff had to say but as I said it would have a lot to do with who was on his ticket and what his plans were.

We currently have 10 board members - no wonder the morons can't make a decent decision and are always "split",there's far too many of them!!! If elected Jeff would only have 5 board members - he's already speaking more sense in 5 minutes than the current board has demonstrated in 2-3 years!!!

I would rather someone like a Costa...we've gotta have one surely, if we don't then all the stories of Melbourne supporters, Range Rovers and snow are probably on the money.

Yes, of course it's grasping at straws. He only saved a financially crippled state that was the laughing stock of the nation and had a terrible credit rating. And he only helped grow Hawthorn into one of the powerhouses on the back of Dicker's excellent work and ended up presiding over a premiership.

The President is there to oversee strategies and corporate governance, not necessarily to be a flag waving supporter. Although I don't think it would take long for Jeff to buy in and show a contorted face in the stand after an agonising loss. Those were the days - an agonising loss. I look forward to when we get close to one.

And as for saving the state Ben Hur - he taxed the bejesus out of everyone and sacked thousands of teachers and nurses and exagerrated how bad the crisis was.

Victoria was back in the black after two years. The crisis was not so big if the recovery came so quickly.

In fact it could have been fixed more slowly - say four years - without any of the social dislocation.

Instead, rather than save the state, he sold it.

It was a beautiful day. I was in Thailand drinking Red when we heard the results.

But Jeff would still get the MFC relevant again.

He was a great friend of Jimmy & i am sure he is quietly disgusted as to what has gone on since.

The club is in a tailspin.

That is the reality.

One thing I will say about Kennett for those questioning his ability to fulfil the job given his passion as a Hwks supporter.

He's the kind of person that throws themselves into everything they do. If Kennett has any passion greater then the Hawks it would be his own success IMO..

So I'd have no concern as to his ability to perform the job.

Jeff's conservative politics don't worry me so much. Government is about doing things for people that they cannot do for themselves and doing things that need not turn a profit. Whether we like it or not, Jeff has been very good in his careers as an advertising exec., as a premier (depending on your perspective, I think a lot of what he did had consequences down the line), philanthropist and football club president.
What worries me is his personal style and his cabal of 'mates' pushing him towards this job. You can be conservative yet be inclusive. This is the bloke who once said that if people didn't like what he was doing with Victoria 'they could vote him out or run him over with a truck.' This is the bloke who began throwing shovelfuls of sand at journalists who dared to question his governments policies and dragged government ministers into his office to berate them for speaking on matters of insignificance before consulting him. The same bloke who said a football club was right to sack a trainer for being homosexual. All these statements are divisive in themselves and right now, we need a bit more consensus and unity. Jeff doesn't provide that.

The second thing I wonder about is who exactly are these people pressing him to become MFC president? (Ron Walker *cough* Alan Stockdale *cough cough*) The last experiment where we had a tightly formed clique running the club, it ended in disaster. Do we really want another one, except this time with Jeff and his toffy private school mates calling the shots?

If you read the headline from the AFL ("Kennett considers Melbourne presidency") you'll see his agenda is simply to big note himself by implying the Presidency of the MFC was his for the taking should he be bothered taking us poor saps on...

There are actual Melbourne Supporting people capable of improving our club, we simply need to find and support them.

McLardy hits back at Kennett comments

MELBOURNE President Don McLardy has responded to comments made by former Hawthorn President Jeff Kennett, who said he would consider standing for the Melbourne Presidency.

Kennett told 3AW’s Neil Mitchell program on Thursday morning that “there [are] Melbourne members out there who have approached me in the last few weeks [and] who have asked me would I be a part of a group to stand against the incumbent board”.

In response, McLardy said that Kennett’s views, particularly those from the past, did not reflect the members of the Melbourne Football Club.

“Over the last few years Jeff has been very vocal in his thoughts on our Club. His suggestions for our Club have included merging with North Melbourne and moving to the Gold Coast. We don’t believe Jeff’s views on our Club align with our members,” he said.

McLardy said he would look forward to updating members and supporters at Monday’s Queen’s Birthday game against Collingwood at the MCG with more information on our Club’s plans moving forward.
