COL GARLAND'S HONEST INTERVIEW (must watch)

Featured Replies

I've heard it all before.

So, what are the answers then? Sack Neeld tomorrow and we'll be sweet?

Haven't heard that before ...

Interesting. I know Col loves neeld so it would have been nice to see another player also lending support like Jamar or frawley.

I'd like to hear it from Sylvia. Part of the old guard and great mates with Moloney.

The interview is fairly good but not as refreshing as I thought it would be. Colin was honest to a degree but it wasn't really stuff that we haven't heard before and didn't have much of an impact on me but maybe I'm just numb at the moment. It was good seeing him front the media without Neeld there as I haven't seen many pressers without the coach at all.

Comes across as a really good quality guy Col............good people will get the club through this.

In light of our general insipidness, i found his honesty and emotion highly intriguing and quite raw. Which is rare in the media trained AFL players of the modern area.

Wasn't looking at exactly what he said, it was how he said it.

"As a demons fan you need to watch this. No I didn't".

No YOU didn't.

But the interest in this thread, responses on the official facebook post, responses on twitter, responses on news websites and AFL websites sharing the video, not to mention the TV news stations and radio and TV footy programs discussing the interview suggests that you are the minority.

Perhaps.

Sorry, it's my mood.

Wow he's really hurting. As much as i hate whats happening right now, I'm still here to stick by our club and i'll be there next week, just like every game we've had at the G so far.

Seemed easy to relate to, spoke intelligently, and wasn't frustrated with the pressure the club is under but instead understood it came with the territory of recent performances.

I wonder if we can nominate him for the board?

Yup, definitely referring to the bailey era (if i could call it an era).

For heavens sake don't use this as an excuse to bag Bailey. After 2009 his gameplan

Started to show dividends.it was a discernible gameplan. I know bailey was coach when Junior was let go but I don't recall other senior players were disregarded

Do you mean as a member of the board or replace the whole board?

wooooaaaahhhhhh! Get your finger off the trigger there son. Not bagging Bailey, never have bagged him much as he is just one in what is a huge list of contributing factors to why we are so insipid. My post history supports that fact.

Garland was clearly referring to Bailey's era as the "in the past" mentioned, i was just stating this fact.

I didn't mean to hit your Bailey nerve.

Yes, Bailey's game plan, that was a winner. handball, handball, handball. I asked him about it and he just laughed. Couldn't explain it then, can't understand it now. He just drilled a bad habit into a bunch of young kids that Neeld has obviously been trying to undo. For the most part it seems to have worked, but every now and then, when under pressure - handball, handball, handball = the inevitable turnover.

Off the top of my head.

Yze, Robbo, Jeff White all felt let down by the Bailey admin. All left with sour tastes in their mouth and mentioned so publicly one way or another.

Cam Bruce had a spat with Chris Connolley and walked before he was pushed.

Yes Col was laughing at the start of the interview. (probably a nervous laugh though).

Let's not forget that all football people, players included, are well schooled and prepared for such interviews. And while Col had a glum look on his face he played each question with a straight bat and gave the % answer. His body language told a different story to some of his answers though!!

Personally I understand that the players have to execute the game plan and not drop marks and hit targets etc. but it IS the coaches responsibility to ensure they have the self belief and self confidence to do this once they cross the white line. Clearly at the moment they don't. Neeld is taking good players with potential and turning them into hopeless hacks.

And anyone who thinks it is all the players fault alone has clearly never played the game. Confidence is the key and they clearly don't have any of it when it comes to the game plan or the person dictating it.

Neeld may be the best football brain and tactician known to man but if he can't get the players playing with belief and confidence then in my opinion his time is up; and he can take his ELITE mindset and stick it where the sun don't shine when he leaves.

The rest of the competition might see us as a Silver Spoon club but good old fashioned guts and determination has got this club further than old school ties have in the past and will again in the future. A change is needed.

The truth is that a 'rabble' second tier team playing with belief and desire would beat our ELITE demons without too much effort at the moment....and that unfortunately is a sad fact.

Go Dees

Its called being Cynical, & it comes from disillusionment... but that doesn't mean its caused by this group... they effectively just cleared the decks, 7 matches back & have instilled a lot of new faces, to take us forward.

.... this is our future starting to play now, with Young player names like - Howe, MJones, Viney, Terlich, Gawn, TMac, Tapscott, Evans, Toumpas, Strauss, Jetta, Kent, Blease, Fitzpatrick, Taggert, ?????

.... this is our footy dept starting to Function. & these are our Kids, starting to standup !

Terlich doesn't have the polish required

Strauss is as soft as butter

The rest show some potential.

Watts, Hogan, Clark, Grimes, Trengove, Blease all playing fully fit should help as well.

Neeld may have marked his cards on Sunday but whoever takes over needs to get this draft spot on.

If they do we'll improve quickly.

Terlich is way underrated by some here. Coming to the club his skills were highly regarded and although he looked a bit sketchy with his disposal the first couple of rounds, yesterday his efficiency was 91% which is pretty good considering there was often no one to kick to.

I stopped listening at 0:44.

I swear to God I've seen this press conference about 20 times since 1990.

We didn't need him to tell us the contest was unacceptable. We watched it. We'd at the very least expect them to acknowledge it.

Also, saying you're disappointed and that all 22 players aren't contributing, is suggesting you're better than what you're playing, which technically would suggest imminent improvement.

I'm seeing increasingly more evidence to suggest that the club is actively seeking to blanket its poor decisions when it comes to drafting, recruitment, and development, by making us believe that it's not a poor performance through a lack of talent: rather, it's a poor performance because they're capable of better.

This is all lovely PR fluff. So lovely I can smell its rose fuse through my computer screen.

Col I'm sure is genuinely frustrated, and I'm sure this interview is truthful, but does it change a damn thing?

I mean, how is it any different to this:

http://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl-premiership/melbourne-demons-coach-dean-bailey-responds-to-186-point-loss-to-geelong-as-the-critics-line-up/story-e6frf3e3-1226105028777#.UZDUYCs8rd4

And how long until we start calling for Garland to be traded?

I honestly do not know what of this club going forward.

I would not be surprised if Peter Jackson recommends a complete wipe of the club and its assets, and a full relocation.

If Col is to be believed, their fitness and training are up to scratch, the game plan is OK, they just can't put it together on match days. That suggests a sports psychologist might be of some help. I don't know if MFC have one on their list, but I know some clubs do. In fact, just listening to him, and guessing that other players are feeling much the same, I reckon a sports psychologist really is needed in the interests of their welfare, never mind about winning or losing.

I know the Coaches Association said they were supporting Mark Neeld, but I see it as a club issue, particularly for the players. Maybe the club has looked at this, but I can't recall seeing any mention of it.

Yze Robbo and White may have felt let down because they were no longer good enough for AFL. It's interesting each player tried to find a new role through the PSD after being "retired" by MFC. No takers whatsoever. Tells a truth.

Looked away and down when mentioning he supports Neeld.

I'm not convinced he's genuine in this regard.

Seriously, who friggin cares what we say to the media anymore?

Show it on game day or shut the hell up.

The decision to force Jnr out cost us Bruce. Fact. It [censored] a number of players off at the club & continues a poor long term history of not looking after people who meant a lot to the club. Then we wonder why our player culture is up a creek?!?

One way footy will never bring success, we won games under bailey as down hill skiers and ask anyone who really knows footy where that'll get you. I'm glad schwab is gone & I hope the boys club gets a real friggin shake up, give some people like Jackson & Craig complete power to revamp the internal workings of the club and give the coach some real bloody support (2nd coach in a row schwab has messed with, go ask Craig what he thought of that!).

Oh, & the Neeld gameplan is to hit a bloody target & hold a tackle!!! They had specialist tackling coach in the preseason, many here reported seeing the work being put into that. Now they go with 1 hand out tackling again?!?! That tackle coach (forget name now) has worked with many top clubs, wonder if he'll give us a refund on whatever we paid him? Ha!! Our current list was so poorly managed the 10 years leading up to the Neeld appointment, it started with Daniher never rejuvenating the list & poor development. We have talent sure, but huge gaps in various age & experience brackets & a very very poor culture, it's taken Jackson how long to point that out? It is largely the players but I also blame a [censored] weak board who allowed schwab to stay on & the board as it stands are still a bunch of imbeciles (you think any other club wouldn't have challenged a $500k fine for being found 'not guilty' in court. Really think the bombers will be slapped that hard at the end of their investigation? A fish often rots from the head, not middle management & the task to turn this around is a collective one from the top. They need to be dedicated as much as the coaches & the players also!

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.
