The AFL is riddled with players who have come off the rookie list or gone late in the draft or come straight out of state leagues & gone on to be some of the best in the comp. Players like Dane Swan, Sam Mitchell or Michael Barlow, the list goes on.

We have our fair share of guys who've gone in the first round. Watts, Trengove, Toumpas, Hogan etc... But who from the Dees lesser likes could suprise and take the next step?

Evans

M.Jones

Terlich

T.McDonald

Taggert

Kent

Magner

If Tom McDonald can improve his disposal, he could become the best centre-half back in the league. That's a BIG "if", though.

I like Matt Jones very much and I think he has a huge amount of potential.

Tommy Mac.. I always forget he was a pick 50 odd.

Agree on Matt Jones. Watching the replay of Sunday's game, he looks very rushed with his disposal and decision making - I think once he gets properly adjusted to the speed of the game, he'll be a valuable contributer for us.

He needs to learn to beat his opponent defensively first. He's been smashed thus far this year. Opposition coaches are singling him out and getting him one on one with his opponent and it works a treat. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt as he's come back from injury and may need a few weeks to adjust, but at present he is more leaky than the Titanic.

Of that list Evans was good the weekend and has upside. If he can manage his back and continue to build up his core strength, he will be a good midfielder for us. He has pace, can kick goals, and has a good work ethic.

Matt Jones has been solid since debuting. He adds depth but I'm unsure he has much upside, being nearly 26 already.

Kent looked good in the preseason. I look forward to seeing him play in the red and blue this year.

Taggert has showed promise in a few VFL games but is injury prone and inconsistent. I'm not sure he will make it, but would love to see him step up.

Terlich has been decent thus far. If he cleans up his disposal then he will play for us for many years off the half back flank.

Magner is a battler, and while I admire his work ethic he won't make it.

He's a long way off Harry Taylor 'Chook', good disposal or not.

Matt Jones is a clever player who has shown a bit, Terlich has a bit of go about him and I like his run with and without the ball, he will get better.

The 2 we need to step up though are Kent and Taggert, both are a good size and just as importantly both are excellent kicks.

Harry Taylor doesn't have that much longer in the game, 'rjay.'

26yo, unless you know something I don't he probably has a few good years left in him yet.

Really? I thought he was older than that.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
