With the Changing World, the .05% alcohol limits, credit crisis on it's knees, & the possibility of the past credit driven economies since the early 70's going into reverse, a central base with Plenty of Public transport infrastructure IMO is essential.

In tomorrows world it seems that fuel prices will continue the upward spiral & cities around the world are putting more pressure on motorcars.

We need a Social Base with Front! We as supporters need a decent Social Hub where we can meet & mingle, dineout, play the One Armed Bandits for some, join in a round of golf with fellow Dees, watch Games & cheer for our changing fortunes coming.

IMO there is No other location up to this one, although I am currently living the country life.

I strongly believe this could be our unifying Hub. It's easy enough for people along any of the Sandringham, Frankston, & Dandenong trainline communities to attend.

For supporters living around Sth Yarra or Toorak areas, Trams or an easy drive or Cab up Hotham St.

Caulfield & Carnegie areas are well served by trams along Glenhuntly Rd.

The sporting facilities near the Hotel are ideal for us to become involved with for footy & for social interests of members year round.

No value to me however great if you live down near there.

The Elsternwick Hotel is owned by probably the largest hospitality company in Australia, ALH, they would only sell it if it wasn't worth buying.

Decent pub, but not much of a step up from the Bentleigh or Leigh Oak, besides pubs/bars are a very risky investment when it's not your sole focus.

It's not for sale, but the idea of the thread is a decent one for discussion. Don't call for it to be shut down just because it's not about some unfeasible trade/draft scenario.

My only experience inside the Elsternwick was for drinks after a wedding.

"A dive" is a bit harsh, it's a standard pub, local yokels... I've worked in pubs for 17 years and it's not bad in the overall scheme of things... Not really suitable for what the OP was suggesting, but from working there one night a week currently I can tell you guys it's a no nonsene, reasonably friendly place, but probably not a great investment.

I had lunch at the 'Wick last monday with an old workmate.

There was nobody in there for a start!

There was 1 person playing the pokies & a few pensioners enjoying the cheap lunch.

DL seems to be obsessed with this block of land...

I live 5 minutes from it.

There is no parking & nobody inside.

The Club would be better to hire it out once a week.

Because the other 6 days would be a disaster.

Let us all remember how much the Filth lost on their Hotel venture.

There's heaps of parking around the back.

It's very rarely "busy", I work there Friday nights and it's not bad but very rarely packed.

The food is average at best, not an awesome place to eat.

ALH as a company massively cut back their budgets in the second half of the last financial year, pubs are not a great investment right now.

I work/have worked for pretty much all the major hospitality companies, they're all struggling, so if they can't get it right, there's no way a footy club will.

Ahh, the wick, I just so happened to have lunch there on Sunday just gone. I agree with stuie's assessment, average food.

Not a bad pub, reasonable vibe in the main bar/TAB area. I saw shane crawford having a froffy and a bet in there a couple years ago.

The pokies are....the same as everywhere else that has pokies. The bistro is OK. There is parking round the back and nearby streets, lawn bowls and golf course across the road and plenty of public transport. Drive thru bottle shop attached which I imagine does OK. Definitely a better location than the Bentleigh club, that is a very busy intersection.

Surely there are better ways for the Club to lose its money than to pizz it against the wall of this joint.

No, Locality, Locality, Locality, & public infrastructure.

Atmo there seems to be many hotels for sale around Melbourne, maybe suggesting that pubs are struggling. It may be, (I don't know) the pub market is coming down & they're may be opportunities arising in the near future?

This area with the bowling club opposite is struggling, & the football ground & tennis courts adjoining the footy ground, IMO, present an opportunity for a Homeless club to workourt an arrangement to Base itself.

I doubt we be able to have pokies on the bowls/footy sites & we took over the Bentleigh Clubs debt, but want to move that location to a Higher profile site.

I'm suggesting we rent a Temp site near moorabbin & install the pokies quicksmart, & transfer the operations from Bentleigh to Moorabbin. Sell the Bentleigh site.

And look to establish a base in the Elsternwwick sites with a view to build a Clubhouse looking both West over the Footy Oval & East over the Bowling Greens.

This would be 60 Mtrs across Glenhuntly Rd from the Elsternwick Hotel which could house the Pokies etc.

To me the infrastructure is the Key.

If we are to have a Social Hub, does everyone want it to be West of docklands, in West Melbourne?

Or, would you like something built elsewhere?

Where would you, the supporters attend for away/interstate games, etc?

My preference isn't the pub but the locality across the road, the Bowling Club/Footy ground as a hub. But I don't know about the ability to have a liquor licence & Pokies situated over they're on that land, & so close to the Pub.

There is space in they're amongst the Bowling/Footy ground for vehicles.

I'm putting up this Idea for people to discuss as I'm sure they're are some business people who could think of ways how it could be developed, & also what wouldn't work.

I don't think we can beat the locality for our supporters.

Try not to think of whats there now, (re whether the pub is lowly) but rather what we could turn it into.

Remember, it's not the pub so much as the opportunities across the road. The pub only because it has the liquor license & the pokies licence.
