Look, you probably won't agree with me, but it's fair to say that I consider Watts a disastrous pick one and would have a number of players ahead of him. Aint hindsight great ? They include: Naitanui, Hill, Hartlett, Hurley, Yarran, Rich, Ziebell, Davis, Sidebottom, Shuey, Trengove, Zaharakis, Ballantyne, Redden, Beams, Hannebery, Shiels, Motlop, Robinson, Sloan and you can add Tom Rockliff who was overlooked in the ND and taken in the PSD.

There's a lazy 20 odd. I'm surprised you didn't include Hannebery, Rockliff, Rich, Sloan, Shiels, Motlop and Redden.

Apologies, missed Rockliff, Rich and Sloan but I think Watts has been a better pick up than the others. They have looked good for periods but not hugely convincing yet. As well as that, most of those players are at strong clubs, with plenty of senior experience around them so who knows what they would be like at the MFC. Obviously we often retard the development of many a youngster.

Will I post about Jack when I see ridiculous assertions that he's been one of the positives to come out of the year ? Of course. Especially when the opposite is true.

John McEnroe's oft quoted verbal diatribe comes to mind.

Are we stuck with him?

I assumed from this thread that there was a way of getting around the fact that Watts is an MFC player and not the Fijian or anyone of the many good players from that draft.

Can we move on?

Either tell me that we need to trade him, give him riods (giving him roid rage - two birds, one stone there people!), or continue to develop him.

Good point, has Range Rover even suggested a solution?

I have indeed.

One more season under Neeld to start playing football the way it should be played, or he goes on the block.

How should it be played in regard to Watts? If you explained this, sorry I must have missed it among all the other posts

What do you mean by 'how should it be played out?'

I mean, how do you think Watts should be playing? Because if you are going to say that he should be splitting packs in half and kicking bags every week from CHF, its time that you accepted that he isn't that kind of player and probably won't be.

If he won't put his body on the line and start hunting the footy should be moved on. It's that simple.

I don't know why it's a subject for discussion or debate.

To be fair to Jack, the 'positives' from this year have been few and far between.

The kid showing he can play at the easiest position on the ground (HFF) may just get into the top 10 positives...

Easiest position on the ground??! We are 16th for opposition inside 50s per game! Yeah, real cruisy position....

Ah it is a subject for discussion and debate because you created a thread about it. How about you have a little faith in Neeld (who you seem to have a lot of belief in) to teach him these things. He has come along in leaps and bounds this yea and he will get better, have a little faith.

As I said, happy to see if Neeld can help him turn it around next year. But the signs aren't good. They really aren't.

Come on, how about you show the same faith in Watts that people have shown in Sylvia for the last 8 years?

Watts has some good things to build on; exceptional disposal bordering on elite, great composure and agility, pace and strong hands one on one not to mention good awareness.

HBF is the easiest place to play.

What position is easier?

IMO the easiest place to play is in the forward pocket. All you have to do is position yourself in front of the pack and wait for the ball or lead up and take a mark... pretty simple.

Try it.

You are working in a phone booth of good timing and execution and you would get it 10 times a game and have 4 half chances - and you better finish them...

No way is that easier than picking off packs and getting hands out the back and finding space off a HBF.

I have tried it, I wouldn't assume to know how difficult a position is if I hadn't played the game.

That is a naive description of HBF. How about being accountable for your man and knowing when to zone off?

On the two or three occasions a game you get delivered a pass lace out or receive a crumb directly at the feet of the full forward, sure it's a walk in the park.

For the other 98 minutes it's a taxing, spirit sapping struggle to lead, present, double back, get crunched, get up, tackle and harrass over and over again with about the only reward a punch in the back of the head or a nasty back pocket's stops being raked against your heels.

Yep, real easy.

I didn't say you didn't have to be a good player to do it properly.

I still maintain it is the easiest place to play.

Pretty simple process though isn't it? There is a lot more responsibility and requirement playing off half back. After all your talk about Watts needing a real mean streak it doesn't sound like you enjoy the physical side of footy much.

No position is considered easy however -

HBF - generally regarded as the easiest position on the ground to play - not naive - coaches have often quoted this - out of form players get confidence back playing HBF- can follow a man and see the ball coming at them.

Fair enough, all in the eye of the observer/player of course.

Just out of interest do you play at the moment rpfc?

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
