Is free agency tied in with the collective bargaining agreement?

A few months ago I was trying to track down the Chris Heffernan rule (ie Can't trade a player in his first year of a new contract) I couldn't find it in any of the laws/trading rules but came accross it in the CBA.

As I understand it there hasn't been an agreement yet on the new CBA and wondered whether that was a reason for some of the vague rules on free agency.

Grow up you loser

Now take this the best way possible but I think you should take your own advice.

Not the 'loser' part, of course...

I didn't need to find it because I already knew it. Just admit you were wrong - twice.

I was happy to be proven wrong, but you don't have to act like a [censored] when I was merely passing on what I had read

Obviously there had been no clear guidelines set by the AFL as their website contradicts what they have previously said

Yes it is complex but that link is actually earlier in this thread...

How about we all try to be nicer and less sensitive.

Yeah-NAH. You're new here, New, and you're entitled to one mistake, take it from Old.

My bad. I believe they have finalised the CBA. I was thrown by the AFL website only showing the old CBA.

It'd be nice to see a copy to see if rules like the "Heffernan Rule" are still valid.

My understanding is each club getting compensation gets A pick. The value of this is whatever the residual between losses and any gains. The values are calculated by the afl according to its proprietory formula ( so god knows ) .

If we lose a lot more than we pick up then youd think a reasonable pick would come our way :)

Suits me :)

Big spring clean followed by a raid at the market :)

Probably struggle to recognise the team next year ( a good thing me thinks lol )

I'm pretty sure you'd get a pick for each player that leaves, less a pick for any player that you get. There may be some adjustment by HQ.

An extreme circumstance would be if you lost 10 players, got none and only ended up with 1 pick. Doesn't seem very fair to me.

It is complex and some things are not well explained but if we lose 3 FAs and get none in - we will get 3 picks.

The complexity arrives when we talk about the 'bands' and whether there is a 'tally' system that will compensate adequately.

If we lose two players at the 2nd band, two players at the 5th band, and we get two players at the 3rd band - how is that calculated? And can you choose how many picks you get? (ie. one higherinstead of two lower...)

The other major issue I see is if you lose less players but more 'valued' players:

Lose two players at 1st Band, and gain three players at 5th band. How many picks does that team get? (if they end up with a net gain of players but not value?)

Does it get 1 pick?

Posted

Ok so if we lose Beamer and Riv, don't pick up any FAs ourselves, then we might be looking at another mid first round pick with some points over (3rd round)...?

Ok..from the AFL site

from section 3 of Free Agency rules:

"His original club will receiveA compensation pick for the loss of the player, on an AFL-determined formula to apply where clubs lose more free agents than they gain in any single transfer period."

This clearly indicates only one pick per club based upon the difference between gains and losses. There are no multiple picks given out.

Couldn't there be multiple picks if you lose multiple players? would fit the rule you quoted...

BB - you should read your own thread - we have gone through this.

then why were you asking if they get 1 pick ??

There is no other result, but 1 pick

Can the compo picks be traded this year or do have to be used in the draft?

They must be used this year. They AFL has placed no trading restriction on them at this stage. Massive advantage for us. B)

cheers

So far its looking like we get a good pick. Could be very handy at trade time

No, no you get as many picks as players you lose BUT the complexity comes in when you lose more value but gain players. I think they will get ONE pick.

But if we lose Moloney, Rivers, Bate, and Dunn and get no FAs ourselves - we will get 4 picks, not one.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
