How fickle is an industry/sport where a disgruntled former player can make some patently hostile comments about his former club and it then prompts this reaction.

The facts haven't changed since 2008. They are what they are. I don't see how some dumb ass disgruntled player can air his dirty laundry, and all of a sudden there's talk of stripping our draft picks at the end of 2012.

Some of the garbage coming out of the media mouths is cringeworthy.

I despair at the lack of considered opinion in media today. I did a jig when MTR went under but there is a tidal wave of poor reporting and journalism continuing to pound us. Opinon presented or interpreted as fact and editorialising are perhaps the most pervasive and this is certainly the case with what McLean has said and how it has been presented and extrapolated.

Hmm... let's imagine that as punishment they take away our round 1 draft pick.

Net result - Jack Viney goes at pick 23(ish), and really all we lose is pick 23.

But hey, that's just another side effect of the AFL making their rules up on the run with no long term or consistent vision. (except of course TV deals, which they have shown to be quite strong at)

He's on record as speaking to Schwab after the Richmond game and gave us the go ahead.

With the media going nuts they had to be seen to be doing something. They'll next announce they're interviewing us and then nothing more will come of it.

On another note I have an idea of how the whole tanking for draft picks issue can go away.

Rounds 1-17 everyone plays eachother once.

After Round 17 comp is divided into 3 sections 1st-6th, 7th-12th & 13th-18th.

Your win loss ratio against the other teams in your section carry over but all other win losses are then effectively useless.

Over Rounds 18-22 you play everyone in your setion once.

In the end section 1-6 play for finals spots positions of 1-6.

Section 7-12 play for the remaining two finals spots with the 4 that miss out finishing with draft picks 7-10.

Section 13-18 play off with the highest ranked team ending up with pick 1 down.

Eliminates tanking as in the last five rounds if you're in the bottom section you need to win to get the pick while the top 2 setions would all be playing for finals spots.

This was a direct result of how the AFL itself had Structured the Draft and who was to benefit from it .

Did it even make a 5% difference to their attitude ? Who knows , but if anyone is to blame its the AFL for puting a system in place that would make players possibly think twice about the benifits of playing to their utmost capacity in a game

In fact if Melbourne had been behind on the day I am sure the players could have taken comfort mentally within themselves knowing that they would get top draft picks and that would give them some hope for the future , so with nothing else to play for they could have justified to themselves that it didnt matter so much if they lost .

In this case there is unlikely to be any paper trail, and so it will end up being one person's word against anothers.

For instance Vlad has said he will run anyone out of the comp if they are found to have been involved in tanking. So if Brock McLean says he was tanking, would he have to go. Probably not - it may even be against the governments whistle blower legislation anyway. What about Dean Bailey? I could imagine the AFL could put influence on Port to sack him. However there would have to be a level of natural justice, or again Dean could take legal action. But Dean is unlikely to confirm that there was tanking going on and so it would be Brock's word again Dean's.

What about sanctions agains the MFC. Again the AFL would need real evidence that they had breached some rules or had brought the game into direpute. In addition I think they would need to provide natural justice to the club, otherwise the club could well take the matter through the legal system. Dean Bailey may just come out and claim he was put under duress by MFC brass ... "Do what we say or face the sack". Whether real or perceived, I would think that would be a mitigating factor in any justice meted out to Bailey.

First week of finals ??

Fwiw I've noticed that during the finals in previous years there is still a huge focus of the draft prospects and possible trades.

Last year all the hype was about Malthouse Buckley, etc. Ross Lyon and Freo, if your team wasn't in the finals last year, finals took a back seat.

Or on the other hand, if we win and the likes of Sylvia and Moloney have a day out, then we will question why they can't do it against stronger teams, or does that mean they don't try as hard against the good teams, or that they are flat track bullies, etc, etc!
