Tune in to SEN now - KB to bring up tanking sanctions for Melb.

There's no doubt we've stuffed up a lot of our first round draft picks over the years.

But I'm now thinking using pick 5 on Brock McLean takes the cake.

How fickle is an industry/sport where a disgruntled former player can make some patently hostile comments about his former club and it then prompts this reaction.

The facts haven't changed since 2008. They are what they are. I don't see how some dumb ass disgruntled player can air his dirty laundry, and all of a sudden there's talk of stripping our draft picks at the end of 2012.

Absolutely crazy stuff. We live in a very dumb age.

Absolutely crazy stuff. We live in a very dumb age.

Some of the garbage coming out of the media mouths is cringeworthy.

I despair at the lack of considered opinion in media today. I did a jig when MTR went under but there is a tidal wave of poor reporting and journalism continuing to pound us. Opinon presented or interpreted as fact and editorialising are perhaps the most pervasive and this is certainly the case with what McLean has said and how it has been presented and extrapolated.

could we be any more pathetic - not only did we tank, we were the only ones dumb enough to get caight out for it, and it hasn't even paid off for us in the slightest. Great job guys.

I think the same way about when we nabbed ourselves going above the salary cap.

Paid big money to crocs like Lyon and Schwarz who couldn't get on the field.

Then dobbed ourselves in.

I remember when Libba was full of yap about Carlton.

AFL had a "meeting" with him and told him to shut it.

We haven't heard from Libba again.

Suspect the same should happen here with Mclean.

Hmm... let's imagine that as punishment they take away our round 1 draft pick.

Net result - Jack Viney goes at pick 23(ish), and really all we lose is pick 23.

But hey, that's just another side effect of the AFL making their rules up on the run with no long term or consistent vision. (except of course TV deals, which they have shown to be quite strong at)

So let me get this straight, Tony Libratore, told everyone that Carlton tanked. Carlton didn't even get a slap on the wrist.

Some halfwit bogan idiot player tells a bunch of hack journalists that we weren't playing to win, and you people think they are going to sanction us?

The AFL makes out that they are ignorant, but they know full well what goes on, and it would not surprise me in the least, if Stynes discussed our plans with the AFL when he was laying out his plans to save the club.

Nothing will come of this, and when we are winning again, nobody will dare mention the tanking.

Hawthorn, Collingwood, Carlton, West Coast? Who?

Pretty sure Demetriou convinced Schwab to take the CEO position aswell.

He's on record as speaking to Schwab after the Richmond game and gave us the go ahead.

Wouldn't be surprised if the discussion wasn't similar to the 1 you proposed above.

Fools, the MFC is guilty, I know it, you know it, everyone knows it, buffoonery at best.

Guilty of what? No crime has been committed, no one was hurt. Buffoonery would have been missing the opportunity to develop and pick up the last priortiy pick before the GC & GWS free for all. I know this will bounce off your head Blue, but 'get a grip'.

WOW!!

Thats not newage shorthand just WOW

as in a novel approach

How would this impact on the supposed draw adjusting where teams play each other evenly and what about the clash games

but WOW!!!

Still not to concerned.

With the media going nuts they had to be seen to be doing something. They'll next announce they're interviewing us and then nothing more will come of it.

On another note I have an idea of how the whole tanking for draft picks issue can go away.

Rounds 1-17 everyone plays eachother once.

After Round 17 comp is divided into 3 sections 1st-6th, 7th-12th & 13th-18th.

Your win loss ratio against the other teams in your section carry over but all other win losses are then effectively useless.

Over Rounds 18-22 you play everyone in your setion once.

In the end section 1-6 play for finals spots positions of 1-6.

Section 7-12 play for the remaining two finals spots with the 4 that miss out finishing with draft picks 7-10.

Section 13-18 play off with the highest ranked team ending up with pick 1 down.

Eliminates tanking as in the last five rounds if you're in the bottom section you need to win to get the pick while the top 2 setions would all be playing for finals spots.

after reading whats in the paper a lot of it points to the richmond game , a lot of these reporters need to reminded that the dees were in FRONT when the final siren went ,so much for not trying to win , what a load of crap , !

I remember Clearly at the time there was much discussion on this Board as to wether Melbourne should loose and avail ourselves of the oppurtunity that presented itself to us with regards to the Draft Picks we could get at the time

Many on here said we should get those picks no matter what others said they wouldnt support a club that tanked .

I was one of those such people . But I am still here supporting Melb.

Why ? Because I cannot see what Melbourne did at the moment to actually prove they tanked . The players played in the most to the best of their abilities

Yes there was some strange moves, but as has been pointed out when the siren sounded we where still in front .

How does this show we tanked?

Bailey at the time made it clear he moved the players into different positions to try and see what would happen with a View to the next year .

Brock Maclean didnt even play on the day

But this is all about Perception and did Melbourne by those moves truly do the best they could to win that game ?

From my opinion they didnt , but this is totally different to tanking as I see it .

A win by Melbourne would have given supporters some hope for the future but at what cost ?

This was a direct result of how the AFL itself had Structured the Draft and who was to benefit from it .

The coach and players would have been fully aware of this , so what affect did this have on them looking forward ??

Did it even make a 5% difference to their attitude ? Who knows , but if anyone is to blame its the AFL for puting a system in place that would make players possibly think twice about the benifits of playing to their utmost capacity in a game

In fact if Melbourne had been behind on the day I am sure the players could have taken comfort mentally within themselves knowing that they would get top draft picks and that would give them some hope for the future , so with nothing else to play for they could have justified to themselves that it didnt matter so much if they lost .

But we werent behind at the time , and a after the siren game won it for Richmond !

Tanking my A-se , The AFL wants to be real carefull here on what they do and how they do it thats for sure !

What a great response from the Dees.

We have made it look like the AFL is investigating Brock and his comments as if they were outside the spirit of the game rather than what his comments might mean for us being investigated.

That's not a straight bat - that's a cover drive.

Very enjoyable.

Well done to whoever thought that simple statement up.

No, no, apparently according to some in this thread we should have come out swinging ...

http://demonland.com/forums/index.php?/topic/31017-schwab-and-mclardy-time-to-stand-up/

Just the usual p--- weak reaction as far as I can see.

A drowning rat come to mind

Swinging what is not clear though

I will be interested to see how this pans out. It is different to a salary cap breach as when they have occured there has been a paper trail, and therefore evidence.

In this case there is unlikely to be any paper trail, and so it will end up being one person's word against anothers.

For instance Vlad has said he will run anyone out of the comp if they are found to have been involved in tanking. So if Brock McLean says he was tanking, would he have to go. Probably not - it may even be against the governments whistle blower legislation anyway. What about Dean Bailey? I could imagine the AFL could put influence on Port to sack him. However there would have to be a level of natural justice, or again Dean could take legal action. But Dean is unlikely to confirm that there was tanking going on and so it would be Brock's word again Dean's.

What about sanctions agains the MFC. Again the AFL would need real evidence that they had breached some rules or had brought the game into direpute. In addition I think they would need to provide natural justice to the club, otherwise the club could well take the matter through the legal system. If they did that then there would be a lot of very nervous people, including Brock McLean.

Dean Bailey may just come out and claim he was put under duress by MFC brass ... "Do what we say or face the sack". Whether real or perceived, I would think that would be a mitigating factor in any justice meted out to Bailey.

Let's face it, this whole thing rides on whether Bailey is prepared to name names. We wait with baited breath.

So according to Brock, Bailey had a tough time going along with the "development path."

So if it wasn't the coaches call to develop the list the way they did then whose call was it?

Was the CEO at the time?

Tthe Football Manager at the time?

The President at the time?

A so called "powerful supporters group" at the time...?

Guest José Mourinho

Let's see what Don and Cam do if the AFL arc up at us.

I expect nothing less than all guns blazing.

We did make a bit of a pi$$ poor effort to divert attention, by "confirming" we have the cap room for Cloke and were going to have a crack.

RR, you said earlier in the thread that the AFL could have ended this by saying a review was done and there was found to nothing, and that by saying an investigation is ongoing, they give the matter legs.

I disagree with this.

By claiming there is nothing to be found, it just gives fuel to the fire, and compounds the ire upon the AFL, for being perceived as being complicit.

The frenzy of the media as the AFL turned a blind eye as is "unacceptable" to slobs like Mark Robinson.

The furore on talkback radio would be palpable.

By saying an investigation is ongoing, it lets the media play with it a little and drag it out until another matter steals their attention, and the AFL never has to actually come back with any finding, or if they do, everyone is so sick of the issue they don't care of the result any more.

This issue will get stale in the next couple of days, and die a fairly quick and unassuming death, despite the best efforts of some media hacks to revive it.

Consummately boring.

Unless of course we lose to GC on the weekend, then the boot will continue to be sunk in. We are an easy target right now. Start getting our [censored] together and winning some games and our plight will be eased.

First week of finals ??

Fwiw I've noticed that during the finals in previous years there is still a huge focus of the draft prospects and possible trades.

Last year all the hype was about Malthouse Buckley, etc. Ross Lyon and Freo, if your team wasn't in the finals last year, finals took a back seat.

Or on the other hand, if we win and the likes of Sylvia and Moloney have a day out, then we will question why they can't do it against stronger teams, or does that mean they don't try as hard against the good teams, or that they are flat track bullies, etc, etc!

The MFC are in a position at the moment where they can't win, even away from the scoreboard!

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
