Rules have changed, he would need to go into the ND first and would probably be drafted between pick 20 - 30

Not a bad result, get him with a second rounder or get a 1 pick upgrade because he is gone prior to that?

I believe he can elect to go in either the PSD or the ND.

Correct he could go into the pre-season but that would be a massive pain in the butt for Gold Coast - in theory they have pick 2 but they are under massive presure with list reduction & why pick your own player.

Gold Coast is a motivated seller, might accept unders if it helped them elsewhere. I reckon they have little choice.

If he goes ND - GC get nothing, probably get picked up around 9-20 roughly - Gold Coast sure hell use that pick in the trade period.

scroll most of the way to the bottom where it talks about players with less than 7years experience

"the player is a free agent and is eligible to field offers from rival AFL clubs...

The player can move AUTOMATICALLY to the new club of his choice"

Seems like we can low ball them and if nothing works out then gc get no compo and we can just approach the kid directly.

Getting caddy for no loss of draft picks = winning

Doesn't say that - players that are there for 7 years or less have no FA until they are delisted.

It's complicated and the MFC website has done itself a disservice by simply cutting and pasting from a 6 month old article - Burgan should go and do a real piece and ask the AFL HQ some Qs.

Yes, because AFL HQ will respond with full clarity and honesty.

Maybe you should, where does it state that "Burgan" wrote this?

I didn't say he did write it. I said it was from the club, which it is. But it is just a CTRL C, CTRL V job from this article:

I would but I am not a journalist.

Actually that's only if he gets delisted. I doubt GC would just delist him. Here's the more relevant info from that article.

A player has served seven seasons or less of AFL football at one club, and is now out of contract.

The player is not eligible for free agency if his club wishes to retain him. He may only move clubs via a trade or the Draft. If he delists himself, he is subject to the Draft, and may be selected by any club.

"Burgan should go and do a real piece and ask the AFL HQ some Qs." This is what you said.

Tale out the tone that you read it with and take it as I meant it:

It would be nice if the "Editor & Chief Football Writer" went and did a piece about how it all works as no-one in the corporate media seems to know/care/bother to understand.

I'm not sure if this has been posted, but:

"Carlton and Geelong are understood to be leading a four-club assault on reluctant Gold Coast midfielder Josh Caddy.

Caddy, who last week told the Suns he wanted to return to Victoria to continue his career, did the rounds this week in Melbourne, speaking with four clubs after narrowing his options following huge interest from most clubs.

It is believed he had previously declined an invitation to meet with Melbourne."

It's going to be very difficult to get players to want to come to us without offering silly dollars.

Does not help our Viney 2nd round cause at all ...

GC would be after Carlton's first rounder.

If they get it they will bid for Viney to replace Caddy and bump up the pick they get from Carlton.

It is believed he had previously declined an invitation to meet with Melbourne."

Nobody could blame him for turning us down so quickly. He is doing the right thing.

Regardless, in my heart of hearts, [censored] him and [censored] everything to do with him.

If they get pick #9 from Carlton

maybe a #pick 2 + #pick 9 + Toy from GC for

a #pick 3 and #pick 4 would be worthwhile.

Would secure us Toy, #2(Toumpas), #9 (Wines), #13 (Stringer, Garlett, Kennedy, Simpson) and Viney 2nd round

Would secure GC Tippett + Pick 4 (O'Rourke)

Would secure Adelaide Grundy

Now this is interesting - I got no idea where you would have come up with this concept. However, my turn to ask the questions

How do you think Gold Coast would feel about moving from pick 2 to pick 4?

How do you think Adelaide would feel about a pure Tippett - Grundy trade?

Why are we not just using pick 13? Instead of 3 or 4. By going to pick 4 who are we helping?

I think Gold Coast would go for it if it gave them a Trump Card over Brisbane to get Tippet. The downgrade would ultimately mean O Rourke instead of Toumpas. I don't think their is miles between the 2.

Pick 3 and 4 beat Brisbanes pick #8 which they will probably offer Adelaide. 13 would not be able to trump brisbane.

And Adelaide would love Grundy as a replacement for Tippet, I am not sure who else they would get and by the sounds of it he is definitely leaving.

Just for the record - hypothetically speaking.

Im not 100% convinced with all of those answers, ie you would get it past both GC and Adelaide during the trade period - maybe a little more work is needed. But you definitely are starting to tick most of the boxes.

Gold Coast - get an un-beatable deal for Tippett who logically must be better for their set-up than Viney. Would give them a great sales pitch to Tippett - we could get the deal done today. They still have a pick in the top4 - Im sure I know which one they would want, they still can have a crack at a 17 YO or pick a player.

Adelaide - get obvious replacement for tippett. Think Adelaide may want a "little" bit more - you know those nice blokes at Adelaide that put all this development in Tippett surely deserve a small reward..

Melbourne - probably want a player off Gold Coast & something off Adelaide for assisting them getting from a theoretical 9-13 pick upgrade to pick 2 or 4.

Can't see why Carlton would go for Caddy, with their midfield and Brock putting his hand up as well. Also if they get Cloke as rumoured, they will have no salary cap room at all.

Melbourne do get a player. Toy

GC have pick 4 to do what they want.

Adelaide wouldn't be trading with Melbourne directly so I don't see why they would need to give Melbourne anything. I dont see how they would be in any position to demand anymore either. Pick #3 for Tippet is already more then enough.

Again - hypothetically speaking and based on if Tippett goes. (but things change)

Maybe we dont want Toy - this is a Josh Caddy thread. Big question is does Caddy want us - but you are only as good as your sales pitch.

GC have pick 4 - Not sure Gold Coast would be too happy with that.

Well did we not help Adelaide to go from pick 9-13 for Tippett to picks 2 or 4? (Think we might keep pick 3 thanks)

Adelaide demand - well can I say no comment please.

I think this is your best trade yet, could even make it a 3 way trade with Carlton to push the whole deal through.

I also think we could try and push another 2/3rd roudner out of it and maybe something else late Carltons way as pick 9 is the tops Caddy is worth imo.

According to Damien Barrett he has requested to be traded to Collingwood.

Bit rich to be picking and choosing, has barely caught an eye.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #3 Christian Salem

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

Following an injury-interrupted start to the season, McVee struggled to maintain the standard he established in 2025 as he pursued an expanded role within the team structure. He remained a firm fan favourite and the club had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the former rookie selection from Western Australia, whose partner, Lily Johnson, plays for Melbourne's AFLW side. Those hopes were dashed when he expressed his desire to return to his home state and play for Fremantle. Like all players who have worn the red and blue and are leaving this year, we wish him well in the future.
