Who are the some of the top picks this year?

Featured Replies

Aside from Viney what other star mids are there out there one Name ive heard is Lachie Whitfield. We purely have to get some mids that can come in straight away ala Dustin Martin type an have an impact.

I don't have much idea about potential picks in this years draft, but unfortunately it looks like we'll be getting Viney with a VERY high pick rather than snatching him in the 2nd round. It's a shame because we could really use someone like Whitfield.

I have not seen Whitfield live but from what I have seen he looks like a cross between Dal Santo and Morton. I doubt he is what we are looking for regardless of his quality.

Why?

Because in the past, teams have been able to use F/S selections with very low picks to get players like Ablett and Cloke. We will not get the benefits of having him as essentially a 'bonus' player with a 2nd, 3rd or 4th round pick.

I've got no doubt he'll be a gun, and by all accounts he is worth a high pick, but I'm frustrated that we won't be able to get him in addition to another highly rated prospect.

That should give you some idea. Personally I like the sound of Jake Stringer & Jimmy Toumpas. I honestly think we're a chance to finish last.

I like these guys too, and Haynes for real pace, Vlasuin is another. There are plenty of good kids in this draft and we need to clean out and get in as many as we can, a mini GWS, GC but with by then a few good players with experience coming through.

Cloke & Ablett were reasons why the law was changed - timing sucks hey? As an aside Marc Murphy was available for the Lions for a 3rd rounder but no dealed them.

From what I've heard JV is worth a pick between 3-5 anyway & if I understand the Scully compo correctly we're looking at two picks in the top 5 (one possibly used on Viney) & pick 11.

It's hardly wrist slitting kind of stuff.

I'm not all that fussed about picks anymore. It's clear now that high picks gets you slightly better potential and that's it. I'd rather we get players who want to stay beyond their first contract, that instill some leadership and team qualities... and mostly, the club needs to fix whatever it is that ruins top 10 draft picks, because when we've had them in the past, we've almost always let them down and ruined their careers. Watts, Johnstone, McLean, Sylvia, Morton... the list goes on.

Spot on Dappa. We need to recruit Viney and experience. We still have kids at Casey who have not played a game yet.

Do we really need more?

Whitfield, Viney, Stringer. That'll be for sure.

Unless we elect to open up Pick 2 to trade...wonder what that would get us in a super draft?

So true. I think as the competition gets spread thinner by 18 teams struggling clubs need to look for players that have played against bigger bodies. I think Jeremy Howe is a great example. You don't get a 110kg gorilla thrown at you when your dominating in the under 18s but you do when your playing good footy in a senior side. We should be looking at other clubs and the SANFL and WAFL with more intent because we have neither time, or a good development history.

I agree, but not with a top-ender. Top end first- and second-round picks should absolutely be used on the top youth products.

A third-rounder or a PSD/rookie pick I have no problem with a SANFL/WAFL player.

Striker475 I wouldn't discount it for a top ender. Look at Trengrove. Played a mix of Jnr. footy and SANFL. I guess what I'm arguing for is that if it's a toss up between a kid who has and kid who hasn't always take the kid that has experience against big bodies. It's why I'm excited about Jack Viney. I'll take the broken jaw because we saw quality clearances against harder heads.

I also see a desire and desperation from the older blokes (20-24 year olds) that get a shot that is part of what we are missing. Magner is a good example.

Oh, that I get. But what I'm saying is don't draft a 23-24 year old at #2 when you could have one of the best kids in the country. Especially since if you're keen they will generally slip anyway.

Jimmy Toumpas will have had 2 years at senior SANFL level by draft time, one premiership under his belt already.

Yes.

We need some inside Mid class... beamer & jones & magner don't give any polish.

Viney is Hard, but is no Judd/Murphy.

That was why we got Scully, Blease and Gysberts I believe. Hope the later two come on

Reading the Whitfield bio i thought they'd mixed it up with the Scully one from a few years ago.

Last thing we need is an outside small midfielder that can't kick more than 40 - 45 mtrs.

There are no guarantees with these boys, & IMO, Blease will be more outside, than Inside. He'll add zip, but we need a magician or 2 In Traffic... like Jaeger O’Meara would have been.

Gys, schools well out on him as well just yet.

$cully, well we know about him.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
