how does the utility work?

if the utility is ticked as an option. and take out a midfielder for instance to make sure 18 players are still played.

for the utility position. you can put what ever player you want there. if you want the leading edge on score. you would put a forward there so you effectively have 7 forwards on the field. or you can put on another ruckman for more hit outs. a midfielder for more touches and so on.

Isnt that effectively what the captain's for though? I don't like the idea of having only 4 centres.

Looks like I'll have to chuck a sickie next Monday so I'm home by 7 for the draft! (Not to mention so I can actually get some kind of strategy)

I hear that, on current form I'll be studying and drafting at the same time!

Would it be possible to increase the max team size to 30? I dont think 5 on the bench will be enough to cover injuries and the byes.

It is possible, but my personal preference is to leave it as is. Given we only have 16 teams in the comp, there should always be plenty of replacements that you can easily sign and subsequently delist.

can i also have a say and make a suggestion that the utility position should be enabled and take away one midfield position. makes planning and coaching that little bit more 'spicier'.

Again, I prefer the setup as is, and agree with BrunoC's comment. The point of the captain is to spice up team selection each week.

I'm happy to be flexible on any of the rules if there is enough support either way. While we are at it - there are a couple that i would like thoughts on:

Bye weeks - Games are still scheduled for bye weeks. It may be tough to field a full 22 for these weeks - but the alternative is no ultimate footy for those weeks, so i suggest we rough it out. It maybe something that you will need to plan for when drafting.

Waivers - "Once a player is Delisted they are placed on Waivers for a period of two days. During this time each coach in the league can put in a request to sign the player if they desire. At the end of the waiting period the coach who applied with the highest Waiver Priority is awarded with the player."

I've opted for the reverse ladder order waver priority (working on a similar basis to the pre-season draft to help struggling teams), rather than the continually rolling list (once you use a waiver, you drop down to the bottom of the waiver priority list).

First saturday game of the round team selection (as opposed to start of the round) - Whoever you choose for the Thursday / Friday night games are locked in, but gives you a bit more of a chance to suss out the AFL team selection

Scoring system - just a reminder to folks, that we are using a half weighting for frees for, frees against, and scoring accuracy. Makes picking Buddy Franklin less of a liability!

Given there were no objections, Jastone and I have swapped first and second round picks. Draft order is final.

Less than 3 days to go until draft time!

I'll be curious where our Melbourne players will get picked. Will we overrate our own? Will Jurrah get picked up? How early will Magner go?

Those settings all look fine....the bye weeks will even the playing field a bit.

The one setting i don't like much - In season player position changes. I think if you draft someone as a forward or back they should retain those positions for the whole year (like in DT/SC). It could really mess up a teams structure if one of their forwards becomes a back or vice versa, especially with, dare i say, a smallish bench.

Oh and Magner....pick 300 is my tip...you would be nuts to draft him any earlier ;)

Correct me if i'm wrong, but i was under the impression when the positions change, a player will never lose a position, only gain one. For example, Stefan Martin in 2011 started off as a back. When it became apparent he was spending a fair amount of time rucking, they added ruck as a position, but still kept his position as a back (and probably should have been a ruck / forward). If thats the case, i don't think there is a disadvantage if they add a position, only an advantage.

Hmmm going over the bye rounds - my simple maths tells me that there will be only 264 players playing those weekends (12 x 22) but if everyone wants to field a starting 18, we will need 288 players (16 x 18). I'm now leaning towards not playing during the bye rounds.

Sorry for interrupting guys but I played last year and IWAP is correct there is no way a player can lose a position they simply gain one. Perfect example was Chris Yarran last year. Didn't play one real game forward but at the start of the year was an F and after Round 4 was a (b,F) for the entire time.

Also IWAP even if people get zeroes its so much better to play every round. You get depressed if you have no UF on bye rounds believe me!

Didnt know it worked like that. Thanks for clarifying.

Hey guys - less than a day until the draft. I'm going to make an executive decision and not play the bye rounds - as DL7 was the only objection and he's not even playing in the league!!!

See you all in the draft room - 8pm Mebourne time!!!

What sort of time limit are we using per pick?

Did you still want to trade picks IWAP or should we just leave it? I'm not fussed. If you can't be bothered, that's fine.

Its 1 minute per pick, and Jastone, i've already put through the trade of our picks. If you check the draft order, out 1st and 2nd round picks are swapped

Cheers mate, very kind of you.

1 minute per pick!! Holy moly! My misses is coming over tonight... How long are we planning on drafting for? Don't think I can sit at the computer all night. I don't mind checking every 10-20 minutes though.

Maybe make it at least 5 minutes? What if we have to cook dinner haha :P

Nar, it works. Especially for you - remember you're not picking every minute. It'll be 15mins until whoever has pick 16 gets to make a call.

That said, speeding it up in the later rounds often works a treat.

Any sneaky ideas as to who will be going #1?

From last year i think once you get into the league page, it gives you a link. If anyone from the other league is reading this, they may be able to give us a clue.

Inviting your missus over is a big mistake. When you end up picking Liam Jurrah with a 3rd round pick, we'll know who to blame! If we left it for 5 mins per pick, we'll be here til the early hours of the morning.

I'd probably go Ablett if it was my choice.

My other league has been drafting at a steady pace for about a week now. No need to get it done in one night. I invited her over before I realised it was 1 minute per pick, can't send her back home now.

if anyone picks Jurrah they're a silly bugger in my book

use ya head, not ya heart

Also quote from top of league page: 'A link to enter your Live Draft will appear here 15mins before the commencement of the draft.'

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
