A further implication of this would be that a current veterans salary will fully come under the cap next year. The mimimum amount to be spent on the salary cap has also been raised to 95%. Doesn't leave a lot of wiggle room for contracts.

Perhaps the AFL are trying to deter clubs from underpaying their players in an attempt to poach stars from rival clubs when free agency comes in?

Now hang on, I haven't seen confirmation that vets can't have half their pay outside the cap - only that the VL is to be scrapped.

I think they will keep the 'veteran exception' without the list.

In 2013, to coincide with free agency, the vets rule is changing to 10 years service only (no age requirement), you can have as many as you want, you get to discount $100K per vet out of the TPP. This will provide some assistance in retaining unrestricted free agents. Not sure what is happening re vets and the TPP for 2012.

Fair call, it wouldn't make sense to make all these alterations to the veterans list only to scrap it altogether a few months later.... I shall remain hanging

This article suggest $100k per veteran outside of the cap.

Veteran's rule could be just the tonic for old Cats

The rule offers clubs the opportunity to pay a veteran about $100,000 that doesn't count in its salary cap. If a club has seven or eight veterans, as Geelong will likely have in 2013, its total player payments is enlarged by $700,000 or $800,000.

Some clubs don't have players in the veteran category and, in effect, have a lower salary cap. Carlton, for instance, does not have any veteran next year

GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs West Coast

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
