Back in the day the 'hooks were the best

This is possibly their best song for all sorts of reasons ... not the least for Shirl's distinctive vocals - the bloke really could sing.

The Caravan Club is no more ( don't get me started on the committee that runs the venue - grrrr)

The owner is opening a new venue at the South Oakleigh Club called "The Phoenix Lounge" - Due to open April.

Have you graced the "new" Caravan Club with your presence yet Nut ? Saw Mick Thomas there a week or two ago (he was fantastic as usual). Very different experience from the previous venue

Quote

The obsessiveness of the lyrics is reflected in the repetitiveness of the music. The song contains the same phrases played over a number of rhythmic, tempo and time signature variations. Perhaps the sheer otherness of I Want You explains why it was so well-liked by all members of The Beatles.

Most remarkable, however, is the grinding three-minute finale, featuring Lennon's and Harrison's massed overdubbed guitars multitracked many times over the same relentless chord pattern, which was slashed at full volume to give the impression that it could have gone on forever. Lennon also used the white noise generator from a Moog synth to get the howling wind effect.

A bit shameless self promotion here... my band Los Romeos Oxidados recorded live at the Marrickville (Sydney) bar known as The Gasoline Pony, covering a Lefty Frizzell tune "Watcha Gonna Do Leroy" (maybe not everybody's cup of tea, but a bit of fun nevertheless) - note also, if you hang on after this tune finishes, there are six more clips of varying lengths that will start up automatically (starting with our version of King Crimson's 21st Century Schizoid Man); but be warned, production values were thrown out of the window and we're probably fortunate that we weren't as well!:

Great, great find SWYL.  i found that fascinating. Was cool seeing them "unmasked", just making music in the studio. Kinda fun to hear the mistakes too - your ears are so tuned to how the record sounds that anything out of whack really stands out. I've only dabbled with recording but it;s a bloody unforgiving & often laborious process. Cool seeing Ross Wilson's role as producer.

Yes i found that in The ABC archive many years ago. Great Band “The Hookers”  They could really play in the studio and live.
in the studio you have to get it perfect, because that is the way it will stay forever.
“Love’s not good enough” was always a favourite long before i found this gem

One of the few benefits of the lockdown is some of the music on Youtube...Tom Bukovac is one of Nashville's top session players. His wife Sarah is a singer & writer.

He's a big prog fan so not surprisingly has covered an early Genesis tune and another from Jethro Tull...enjoy

"Ripples" - Genesis

"Wond'ring Aloud" - Jethro Tull

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #3 Christian Salem

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.
