According to Sportsnewsfirst, Cam Bruce appears destined for the scrapheap -

Bruce on thin edge at Hawthorn.

A disappointing end to a good career.

I'll probably get abused for this, but good. If he had of stayed with us he probably would have got another year, he was only competing for a list spot with an upgraded rookie.. The way he left was a disgrace, potentially cost Junior another year, and was probably the stupidest decision ever made by a footballer trying to lengthen his career.

Overpaid and selfish is how I'll remember Cam.

Trackie Daks took a massive punt on himself and failed. The way i had expected things too happen. If he had knuckled down and tken the demon contract my bet is he would be playing in 2012.

A lesson for all ageing players. Swallow some pride & stick around.

Well written Furious, no abuse from me here.

Some will argue this, but it probably shows that Green really is a leader at the Club. Could've easily put himself before the Club, ala Bruce, but put the Club before himself and signed a 1 year deal.

Green extending means he isn't an egotistical idiot.

I saw this occurring and Cameron the Bruce ruined his legacy (however small).

9 games!!

Ruin it for 9 games...

And furioud d is right, he would be a big show for 2012 if he was still at the club.

I agree furious, we should have kept Junior on for one. Cam, I'm sorry it's over, but I'm glad we had the chance to grab Nicho' & Evans.

C'mon RP, stop being a smartass, putting the Club before yourself is leadership. The arguement is whether that's the only leadership he has shown this year.

It's 'smartarse'...(irony?) and re-signing with the club is making the right decision. His, and the club's.

Green is a fine player, a great bloke and clubman, and rarely does the wrong thing by the club.

He made a far better decision than his very good mate.

It's a little bit patronising for me to laud his leadership on the no-brainer issue of re-signing.

I believe it says more about Brad's humility than his leadership.

Could've sworn that he got a 2 year contract with the Hawks. Wasn't the main reason he left because we would only offer him one and he had seen how we had treated older players?

He had to play a certain amount of games to trigger an extension.

Needless to say he didn't get there...

Obviously the Australian spelling of "arse" is accepted on here. So, irony? No.

Playing just 9 games this year would have probably have seen him gone from the MFC too, especially with a new coach coming in.

Cam is actually a ripping bloke from what i have been told, so it would be interesting to speak to him over a beer when all haa cooled down to hear his feelings. It wouldn't suprise me if he got into fitness/coaching in the future.

did he put the club before himself? Or did he see the writing on the wall that was the Bruce blunder?

I don't see it as putting the club before oneself- I see it as approaching the situation with logic. Was he offered 2 years with no strings from other clubs? I don't think so, it would have been one with an option to extend (probably) so Green thought he'd play it safe and stay loyal to us.

Do I applaud it? Yes, but I don't see it as a statement on leadership.

Next.

Cam played some great games for the club over 10 years but he didnt deserve to still be one of the best payed in 2011.

A part of the reason we had so much to throw at TS and then failing that Mitch Clarke, came from saving money on Cam.

Each to their own, but I think Brad has more to offer over the next 2 years than what Bruce could've offered. The writing was well on the wall for Bruce mid-last season, but he went fishing and got a 2 year deal. I'm sure if Brad wanted to, he would've found the same.

Next.

But Bruce didn't really find a 2 year deal did he? He found a 1 + 1 on the proviso particular requirements were met. We can only speculate on whether Green would have got 2 years unconditional or not. And if the writing was on the wall for Bruce, the writing must be all over the house for Green after his season.

Either way I'm happy with the outcome and can see Green possibly getting his (what will be deserved and rightly so) extra year.

Did you see any of last season Sloonie? To watch Bruce deteriorate they way he did was quite sad. The difference between Bruce of 2010 and Green of 2011 is the fact that you can easily tell Green has got great footy left in him. There is no way possible that you can argue with that.

Green was down in confidence, Bruce'd body was shutting down. If you know what you''re looking for, you would've seen that. Junior was in Bruce's category.

He should just read Ben Counsin's torso.

I reckon Bruce realised that he only had one year possibly two years of football left in him. He summised that at MFC he had only 1 year at most. He was right. After he had an injury riddled year with 9 games, Tapscott and Strauss were coming up and would have been preferred. There was no chance given where MFC's list is that he would have gotten another run in 2012.

And putting the Club before yourself in this modern game is not leadership but self sacrifice. Bruce may have been self mercenary but for guy who was pick 64 in 1999, he did well to play 233 games in 12 years with 1 Bluey and a couple of close calls on it. Wouldnt mind if we got a few picks like that at pick 60+.

Perhaps. I just can't see clubs clamoring over themselves to acquire the services of a 30 year old who is down on confidence or form.

One that was down in confidence and still kicked 37 goals?

Hawthorn would do it in a heartbeat. Imagine Green perched up next to Buddy, with Hodge, Mitchell and Rioli feeding him. He'd easily kick 30 goals a year for them, even with Buddy. While their window is open, it would've been quite valuable.

Hmmm point taken.
