Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

When is Gawn's contract expire? I feel we have to manage very carefully how to keep Gawn on the list whilst squeezing everything we possibly can out of Jamar. If it comes down to a choice between keeping Jamar, or offloading him to retain Gawn I'd have to say we offload Jamar.

Can't have the cake and eat it too- I'd rather keep Gawn as he has many years left up his sleeve and will be a monster. Jamar might have to make way, and we will still be remunerated quite nicely I'd think.

Didn't Gawny follow the leader (JT) and sign an extension this year?

I don't think it would come down between keeping Jamar or Gawn, Gawn playing under Jamar for the next 3 years will be worth as much to his development as being the lone hand. I'm not questioning his ability, but Maxy would know there is a large gap between where he is at and where Russian is at, and would expect that it would take him a minimum of 2 years, if not 3-4 to be at Russian's level.

Let's not forget that Gawn and Fitzy were picks 30+ and 50+. They aren't Top 10 "stars" like Kreuzer.

Do you know when Gawn's contract expires? I think he did sign when JT did. I'm just trying to work out when Gawn might be ready to take 1st ruck duties, because I believe when he is ready we could have another Jolly situation(as someone already stated) on our hands.

Expires 2013. He will want to consolidate a spot in the team by playing consistent footy before worrying about if he should be number 1 ruck. 2013 will only be his 3rd actual season of playing senior level footy. Even Big Maxy would be realistic about things.

The 11 pick example could be pushed back another few places if

A lower club's 'After 1st round' pick is exercised

Another club qualifies for the 'losers' compo pick

How many other "after 1st round" picks are there? We have one, Geelong have/had one, anyone else?

Port, Bris and GC are the only sides that can get a priority pick in 2012. You would like to think the AFL will give a gift to those Clubs (such as playing GWS twice!), that would help!

from Compo thread in Drafting Board

1st round after club

===============

GWS (after Crows/Davis for Crouch)

Bulldogs (after Dogs/Ward)

Melbourne (after Melbourne/Scully)

Geelong (after Geelong/Ablett)

Mid 1st round after non-finalists

========================

GWS (Geelong/Ablett via Gold Coast for O'Meara)

Melbourne (Melbourne/Scully)

So if we finish above Dogs and Crows at 8th (your example)

And their 'After 1st Round' picks are exercised

And one of Port/GCS/Bris get a compu pick

The 11 pick has dropped to 14 (or 13 if we finish 9th, or 12 if we finish 10th)

And, at 8th place we are still 2 picks off a mid pick

So, Mid worth 16 or 17

This is why I think too many are overrating our compo picks

Not so much overrating them. They can turn out to be a little nugget, but, as you have pointed out above, they can turn out to be mid-teen picks.

We (or a club we trade them to) have 5 years to use them. One would expect our ladder position to be higher, meaning our "1st round after club" pick wont be as valuable. On the other hand, if we don't progress like we hope, and other teams are winning their 5 games a year, that's when they are worth a fair bit.

My idea of them requires for a few things to go in our favour, just like your opinion of them being overrated, you need teams to lose certain amounts of games, and other teams to activate them.

Used right and luck on your side, they are great. Held on to too long and other teams not performing, they aren't great!

You are misinterpreting me

I say that others who rate them around the 10 mark are 'over-rating' them

I'm not saying they are not valuable, i believe they are, but lets stop all this talk of them being worth close to the 10 mark (not having a go at you in particular)

Well, I did say that they potentially could be worth 10-14 range, and as I said, things have to work in our favour(?) for that to happen. But on the other hand, for them to be worth 16+ would require things to work against(?) us.

Basically, for them to be good for us in any capacity, we need to finish closer to the bottom. It's an evil beast. I'd prefer them to be worth around pick 20 - means we finish up near the top and other teams are getting prioirty picks from winning bugger all games!

Gawn did his knee prior to the draft, alot of clubs would have been put off using their first pick for this reason, and im not saying Gawn is or was a first round talent.

But two years is a long time, and if he can start getting games and putting on the weight his size alone means he will be one of the biggest weapons around

I would imagine that all of the names that the OP suggested will either look for a trade or could play their way into a new contract, bar Strauss who i think is staying no matter what. With the 2 compo, Viney and 2nd, 3rd, 4th yes thats six list spots but I have a feeling that if the results are good next year on field, then we could be very active in the trade month aiming for a quality mid, probs will target Pendlebury imo. Viney and 2 compo will be kids, the 2nd, 3rd, 4th will be used with players to trade others in I reckon. Just a thought.

Does mean we can trade him for a 1st round pick, and then usethat pick to select Lynden Dunn?

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
