It is becoming very clear that the expansion clubs which are offering ridiculous amounts money of to very young uncontracted players who were early draft picks to clubs such as Adelaide & now Melb is putting extreme pressure on football depts.Imagine seasoned players like Jamar,Frawley All Australian getting paid 400-500K less then Scully a 20yo???.

What the AFL have done is create a situation if the club does not match GWS to retain Scully they look like they are not capable of keeping talent & if they do they risk allienating the rest of the playing group.

Welcome to AFL expansion!

Frankly I am amazed that the clubs signed up to this expansion arrangement. I can only imagine they did so on the basis of being won over by a promise of more money for them through the increased TV revenues and a gaurantee of their own existence (in the case of clubs like Melbourne).

The AFL have not been secretive about their desire to see GC and GWS get a massive leg up hence the turning a blind eye to their own rules on recruitment (ref: Davis, probably Scully + others). you can bet the AFL will skew the comp to ensure both sides at least play in a GF in their first 6 or so years. Quite apart from the money being thrown at players I can see how some would be attracted by an AFL endorsed gaurantee of success without really having to work for it.

This is only one part of it, and expansion was necessary.

At the moment it's hurting us,,, but when the dust settles and we, at this time next year will be in front. As the other teams who have not grabbed much talent in the last 2 years, this and next year, will fall by the wayside, as the next couple of years pass by.

Aside from this, the timing of our rebuild and Admin restructure, where we had the footy dept down @ the Junction, and the admin @ the MCG, may have bred some separational, bad habits.

Then we get to the shiny new H/Q, and a shiny new account balance, and with a shiny new List & everybody wants to own the new baby.... "Everybody wants to get into the Act"

IMO when the dust settles from these serious teething troubles, we will be on our way. But a vacuum in real leadership, creates these types of problems at critical times.

Once we get a universally excepted Coach, our Off field areas will settle.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
