Crowd Size v Hawks

We are vying for a spot in the 8 and we get less than 40,000 ... the night before Carlton and Essendon pull 74,000.

In the 40,000 the bulk of them appeared like Hawks ... it was shameful

Yep, many of the regulars who sit around us were a no show today. Pretty pathetic.

It didn't even rain.

Melbourne supporters need the same dose of harden the f' up as our players.

Very disappointing. I think we were outnumbered by the Hawks supporters although it was a default home game for them. Far too much yellow in the crowd today and it wasn't for Cadel Evans.

Yeah ... no doubt we where out-numbered, heaps more yellow and every time the umps got it wrong according to them the noise level was 3-4 times higher.

Good call..........it was embarassing how few Melbourne supporters were at the game!

Hard to fire the team up with that kind of pitiful support!

I honestly nearly thought I had gone interstate ... did you hear the crowd at Gold Coast last night .... they were chanting Collingwood I was nearly sick.

Yeah southern stand reserved seat area was fairly empty

Don't know what we need to do to get our members to turn up to games! No excuses when at the G and fine weather playing a top side. The Hawk supporters clearly outnumbered us. Even the Hassett room after the match was half empty which very rarely happens even when we do lose.

Great snow season. Just sayin'.

To be honest I can see why. It was crappy in the morning, we haven't played well against good teams.

Starting to wonder why we shell out over $1000 a year in memberships and travel to watch this. I can watch every game next year live on Foxtel. How many people are going to cancel memberships?

Not really surprising, the way we've played against the hawks over the last few years hasn't been very entertaining.

That's the spirit.

I was absolutely shocked by the size of the crowd. Mind you, the players keep dishing up trite against half decent opposition, so...

That's the spirit.

I know it sounds terrible, but I have a young family and my wife works weekends because the money is great. I work afternoon shift so don't get to be home at night and Friday night games are out. We don't get as much time as we would like together and time is precious. Today we left home at midday and didn't get home until 7pm. There is lots that we could have done in the few extra hours around home. Today was especially disappointing by the total feral children with their parents that wouldn't control them. Don't get that at home.

I'm not the only one in a position like this. I wish it was different, but it's just the way it is. Can't have it both ways. Call me shallow if you like.

A guy I work with cancelled his Foxtel this year because Collingwood are nearly always on free to air, but next year will go back to Foxtel

You win some, you lose some...That's Business....It's a shame, really...

Yeah the same business Carlton & Essendon are in ... yet they can do it ... its the selfish nature of Melbourne supporters, if it doesn't go their way they make excuses & look for someone else to blame ... if they don't watch they will be going to a funeral soon ... their own ... the penny just wont drop for many.

What club do you support?

Heaven help this footy club if our supporters think along these lines and cancel their memberships next year to stay home and watch games from their couch.

Every supporter will come up with 100 valid excuses as to why they can't/won't go, but none of them will stand up and say "I am part of the reason why Melbourne don't get blockbuster games, why Melbourne gets home games at Etihad and has to drive to Geelong every single year, and sell home games to Darwin".

We complain and whinge, but it's our doing.

Sadly, those of us who go every week, without fail and without excuses, are the ones that have to suffer, along with the team.

I'm not having a dig at your specifically and good on you for going today, but seriously I just really loath Melbourne supporters sometimes. Half the idiots who whinge about this club are the same ones who don't turn up to games and don't contribute financially, and as far as I'm concerned they can [censored] off.

Poor language.

Pretty sure it was the selfless nature of MFC supporters ,that got us out of debt.

No its was the selfish nature that got us into Debt in the first place ... then the small few that got us out plus a massive HANDOUT from the AFL & MCG.

Next time there will be no out.

Team has got to fire, before the big crowds will come....whether it is right or wrong. That is the situation.

The Honeymoon is over for the Sympathy period....the Team has got to improve.

Until the thrashings are a thing of the past, the crowds could be average.

The club has got to hang tight this year, it is going to be hard, and that includes the draft weeks after the season.

Disappointing crowd, no doubt about that. Less than 40,000 for two Melbourne-based, MCG-based, MCC-rich clubs. About 10,000 lower than what we ought to be pulling.

Yes, there was some rain around early in the day, and yes, we're not in the best form, but we're vying for a spot in the 8, and Hawthorn are vying for a spot in the 4.

I was surprised when the crowd was posted as 39k, I thought it was around 33k at best, MCC was thin on the bottom deck and GSS which I would think was GA today looked like Swiss cheese, yellow and full of holes.

Thats the Catch 22 ... to become more competitive on the field we need to spend more money inside our football department ie off the field. How do we build our football department spend without the crowds ... How do we get our supporters to buy into the programme? How do we get them to understand its 2011 ... clearly some are still stuck in the past.

Reminds me of the crowd for the Neitz tribute game, also against Hawthorn.

Rubbish but imagine what it'll be like for teams that permanently disappoint when fans can watch every game at home and don't have to waste their day travelling to see garbage like that.

Sadly I'm compelled to go and be there for it in person but if I was from the country forget it.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
