Tom Scully

Perhaps you don't like balance in a discussion.

I read in one post where you spoke of common sense. It has a funny knack of escaping you.

Ugh.

Cue: If that's all you can give to a discussion...blah...blah

What is the real diagnosis of Tom's injury? Shall be pivotal in many ways.

What is the real diagnosis of Tom's injury? Shall be pivotal in many ways.

Yeah it could be chronic, the only thing that can cure it is ...

a/ Staying in Melbourne

b/ Play at the MCG

c/ Play in a red & blue jumper with MFC on it for the next 10 years.

I for one am hoping to wake up to another Tom Scully fluff piece

in the herald sun filled with rehashed interview snippets from anyone

remotely affiliated with Scully. Please include any popular rumors with

no factual standing about his future and add a touch of journalistic

hype and imaginative story writing for good measure.

Moral choice : Determinism - I can do no other than respond to stimuli ( GWS )

: Free Will - I am not a slave to the inducements that are presented be they even though as apparently irresistible compulsions

Let's just sit back and see who he really is

oh and by the way if determinism is the actual situation on the planet then there is no such thing as the ability to make "moral choices" - the matter is settled

Who is talking about retrospective drafting? Clearly the point being made is that not all picks will necessarily yield a Cale Morton. Perhaps you don't like balance in a discussion.

Average life span of a footballer four years - go back through the drafts and look at picks 1-20 and clearly there are as many "average" footballers as there are A graders. And then we resort to , this player was picked before that player and we could have had this player before we picked that player.

Bottom line is no matter how much science you put into drafting it is still to a certain extent, a lottery.

I have seen Scully and his deficiencies I know what I am getting and as a 20ish game footballer who has played at the top level with his attitude and professionalism I am happy to crystal ball as to where he will end as opposed to draft picks.

There's your balance

A question - pretend for a minute that Tom Scully is going nowhere - all this is just a dream - another club says we will trade two first round draft picks for him - both being mid tier I believe - would you do the trade ?

G'day ladies ... I'm back.

Good to see the tide starting to turn around here with people waking up a bit.

Even ol' Rpfc has changed his tune!

Welcome back RR ... Yeah I picked up the slight movement in RPFC he really is getting attached to those 2 Priority Picks that he assumes is coming our way. However, he is not the only one.

Only time will tell Patience all ... Go Dees.

What tune is that?

I am not the one with a decision to make in September.

I am glad to see Tom vindicated - he hasn't signed.

And we await his decision.

In the event he leaves we get adequate compensation - assuming we trade it for an established player - so that base is covered.

If he does sign it will be on terms we can afford - so that base is covered.

So we play the waiting game...

Hypotytical speaking ... That all revolves around if Tom wanted to go to that club.

1/ If he doesn't you would not consider it.

2/ If he does you have to consider it ... you may be forced to consider much less.

Velocity Sports hold all the cards .... in 8 weeks time we could be powerless. However, I hope it never comes to that.

In RPFC's defence he never really said that Tom was going to stay. Just that he 100% backed him in telling the truth when he said that he hadnt signed anything yet.

It seems you've deleted "Sign On To Serenity" from your playlist and replaced it with "Two First Rounders".

Sheehan coming out and putting his aggets on the line basically sealed it.

It's going to be fascinating to see the explanation Tom gives if he decides to go to GWS.

If he says it's for the money then he'll be forever known in the broader football community as Tom $cully, the mercenary, even if he has unselfish aims like providing for his family in mind. It'll be tough for him to come out and say this even if it is true.

If he says it's not for the money, then that suggests a strong cultural issue at MFC - the culture at GWS is better? The broader football community will write that off as MFC - perennial losers - a description we've done a fair bit to earn over the decades. But I suspect this explanation won't go down too well with the Demon faithful.

Much easier to stay Tom.

If he says straight out it's for the money I think most people will cop that.

What else can he say?

This is where the comparison to Ablett begins and ends because the "I've won premierships and Brownlows and need a new challenge" line just won't wash.

Agree on the Ablett comparison. If it happens [see what I did there] that's why it will be interesting to see what he says, I maintain that people struggle to say they did it for the cash.

Why would anyone want to leave Serenity?

I can't think of a reason.

Still think he will stay.

I'm happy to discuss hypothetical compensation, that's fine. Especially when people have this strange notion that pick 10 and 20 is the equivalent of a pick 1 (Tom Scully) and that those two picks will somehow get us TWO of those 17 year olds...

And Mike doesn't know. He really doesn't. And we have gone over this, but journos putting their reputation on the line is meaningless - they give each other their reputation and nothing bad happens to them when they are wrong. Nothing.

Look at whoever it was that outed the vilified Gold Coast player - I can't remember who it was because nothing happened to them.

You need to be less naive about this particular issue.

Tom will let you know in September.

Especially given his reply in the presser in March when he was asked "how do you resist the big offer ?" - see his reply.

I can't remember any sportsman revealing that cash was their motivator...

The 'Melbourne Culture' issue is an issue worth exploring.

I actually believe very strongly that every club has a distinct culture, which is driven by the senior players and recently retired past players. I actually am fairly certain Melbourne has a very very poor culture. No players absolutely driven for success. Too many happy to go along without doing the hardyards to take the leap from good player to champion.

Scully is a rare bread. He will work and work and work towards success. He accepts no less. It's the type of culture obssessed with getting the absolute best out of yourself which our club can build itself around

Scully, Trengove and Grimes- 3 players who take pride in being the best, preparing the best and doing everything it takes to become great players. Scully would lead them all.In 3 years time, Scully captain, Trengove, Grimes, Frawley, Jones and Mckenzie. Now that's a leadership group.

Green is a poor captian. Not a natural leader. Davey isn't a natural leader either. Both are not onfield leaders either.

Scully could well turn our club around and introduce a new culture and brand of leadership. If Scully does stay, he will be well worth it.

In the event he leaves we get adequate compensation - assuming we trade it for an established player - so that base is covered.

Massive assumption. But will we? Get "adequate" compensation. Thats the $1 million dollar question.

Depends on where he goes & how he gets there.

Since when has a journo ever worried about putting their "aggets" on the line... particularly when most of them have none to begin with? Would I be right in I supposing you think that used car salesmen have pangs of guilt when they sell you a lemon as well?

I agree old55. The 'sticking fat with Tom' support he has received repeatedly from the likes of Schwab, Trengove, Green, Bailey and them highlighting his vindication of keeping to his word that he hasn't signed and will negotiate, handle his contract at season's end - I believe strengthens the notion that it's easier that he stays. It would also make it difficult or at least uncomfortable to leave just for extra money, when he has said before that money isn't an issue and the fact he can be well looked after at DemonsHQ.

The recent focus on some sort of issue at MFC between players and management - where has that come from ? Is this a planted seed from beyond g.wubby.sheeds, impregnated in the media minds to help deliver some sort of an out clause or reason for young Tom to use if that way inclined ? I don't know. But it would be a clever little scheme.

Well I could think of 5 million reasons but let's not go down that path because it's well worn and I'll probably end

up getting banned again.

The naivety line cuts both ways.

Yip & I too have supported him from day 1 on that topic. There is absolutely no doubt he has not signed Velocity sports are smarter than that.

"Average life span of a footballer four years - go back through the drafts and look at picks 1-20 and clearly there are as many "average" footballers as there are A graders."

I don't need to, as I agree with this assertion.

"And then we resort to , this player was picked before that player and we could have had this player before we picked that player."

I wasn't "resorting" to anything, chum. A poster flippantly disregarded what may be drafted with either of the two compensation first round draft picks and I highlighted that with astute drafting one can pick up good players with these picks. There were plenty of other examples I could have mentioned from the 08 draft, but just chose three.

"Bottom line is no matter how much science you put into drafting it is still to a certain extent, a lottery."

I don't agree with this statement. The very best recruiters make mistakes, but plenty of times they get it right. In any industry some are better than others. They've watched countless games and tapes of these players since they were 16 and sometimes earlier. The success of first round draft picks is improving due to the research conducted. You talk about "retrospectivity". The best recruiters are paid to use foresight, not hindsight. That's why they're worth their weight in gold. Once a player gets onto a list they also need to be developed. That argument is for another day.

"A question - pretend for a minute that Tom Scully is going nowhere - all this is just a dream - another club says we will trade two first round draft picks for him - both being mid tier I believe - would you do the trade ?"

No.

"It's officially time for some alarm bells. I'm concerned about the lack of impact from their best players." This comment about one of the teams contesting this Friday night’s game came earlier in the week from a so-called expert radio commentator by the name of Kane Cornes. He wasn’t referring to the Melbourne Football Club but rather, this week’s home side, Geelong. The Cats are purring along with 1 win and 2 defeats and a percentage of 126.2 (courtesy of a big win at GMHBA Stadium in Round 1 vs Fremantle) which is one win more than Melbourne and double the percentage so I guess that, in the case of the Demons, its not just alarm bells, but distress signals. But don’t rely on me. Listen to Cornes who said this week about Melbourne:- “They can’t run. If you can’t run at speed and get out of the contest then you’re in trouble.
