close to breaking even?

did you see Frawley start 3 mtrs behind buddy on a lead and pass him like he was standing still? or maybe you only saw the one on one contest in the goal square when buddy put his arms out for another free and duly recieved it.

i was sitting with 2 hawks supporter mates and they, along with me, think Frawley owned him in that game. how buddy got 2 brownlow votes is beyond me.

I haven't seen the match since it happened, but I'd like to think I remember it well.

In my mind, Frawley beat Buddy, but at the end of the day, Franklin finished with (I think) 3 goals.

And there were times when there wasn't much Chip could do, even though they were few and far between.

I can't say Buddy was comprehensively beaten when he finished with that scoreline.

The umpires had a hand in that, but I don't like blaming the umps.

This was exactly what was being spoken about when the MFCSS merchants came out in the NAB Cup in 2010.

I could clearly see this style used in glimpses in those matches and it was only a matter of time before it happened more frequently.

As I said at the time, some will only recognise the gameplan when it is working.

when you think about Watts and Jurrah being on the end of those lighting fast movements you realise we are going to be extremely hard to beat

why not? in contrast to popular belief they do decide games unfortunately.

They have to be put in a position to decide the game in the first place.

Believe it or not, the umpiring can be influenced in your favour by your style of play.

A bloke like Joel Selwood has done this to perfection.

I hope you are not encouraging young players to deliberately manufacture head high tackles to win frees?

Mind you I admit I don't know how you prevent Selwood from doing it. He's not ducking his head, just bending his knees. He's fortunate he has a tough scone, but one day I suspect he will regret it.

We also see players drawing head on tackle frees by diving forward into opponents legs/knees/boot. This might be courageous but someone is going to get a spinal one day

That's it -- what Selwood does, every player is able to do, yet he is the only one that does it as consistently & often.

He doesnt play for frees IMO, but the style in which he plays the game invites the umpires to look after him.

I think as a team it is entirely possible to play a gamestyle that literally prevents the umpires from being too harsh to you.

If I knew how to replicate that, I'd probably be an AFL assistant coach like Mark Neeld.

agreed, and also by a player's history or status in the game, and i have no doubt that collectively teams at the lower end of the table cop the rough end of the stick. should any of it be relevant to umpire's though......

I remember the umpires were kissing Buddy's behind all day. One which baffled me was when he slid and knocked the ball out of bounds and he called it deliberate against Frawley. That sickened me.

Oh boy, that was the worst decision I have ever seen! It wasn't even a judgement call, it was just blatantly wrong! Not blaming the decision on us losing, but definatly the worst decision I have seen in my 23 years on Earth, nothing else comes close!

    Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.
