The Allen Jakovich Appreciation Thread

I think they tried some new type of knee reconstruction which is common now. I'm no medical expert but I believe it was a record or close to record time recovery for the period.

He was a very talented player Steven Clark, but obviously his knees were shot after that season.

I remember when he did the knee an essendon mate of mine, had said "That's the reason they got rid of him" it was sad & ironic that he did it against his old club.

He also notched up his 100th goal in his 21st game which was against Collingwood at Vic Park a game we won by 9 points. We really had no right to win this game as we were languishing down the bottom of the ladder in '92 and the Pies were on top when we played them. That was a good win I think my dad was scared we would get bashed on the way out of the ground 'cause I was rubbing salt into the wound of the Maggie supporter by singing "Its a Grand Old Flag" all the way back to the car.

My fav Jako moment was when he slapped a collingwood granny who was swearing her mouth off. I think her false teeth went flying out. Mind you she took it well. I think she thought she deserved it.

Great link.

Late teens at the suburban grounds were great times and decent sides to watch. Stinger, Jako, Viney, Lyon, Stynes, Lovett, Obst etc a fantastic group.

Sean Ralphsmith had me thinking Kosi.

Jacko is the saddest story of all time. He could have been anything if only he could have played a full season. He would have been the first to kick 100 goals in a season for the Dees.

I just read my quote from jacko about Collingwood supporters (see below).

Fantastic.....all my questions answered. For those who didnt check the WIKIDEMON link Jako holds the alltime VFL/AFL record of fastest 50 goals FROM DEBUT(from 9 games ) and SHARES the 100 goal record with the legendary John Coleman (from 21 games ) also of course from debut. Coleman's instant success is legendary but our "wild child " seems to be largely forgotten by non-demons. With the addition of his 60 Reserve Grade goals in '91 his total for thaT year was 131..........WOW !

I loved it when he kissed his brother during a match vs West Coast.

Yes that was a day to remember!!! Would love to see that whole game again... B)

Or when against Collingwood he kicked a typically cheeky and freaky Jako goal and then pulled the front of his jumper over his face and spread his arms and wnet "flying" around the Collingwood backline. I can remember Mick McGuane get really pi$$ed off with the antics. Lovely stuff.

Ah Jako...at his best...mercurial and one of the best individual performers I have seen in the red and blue.

At his worst...he was lamentable. And you never know what you were going to get on the day.

If we can compare any modern player with Allen it would have to be Brendon Fevola. But Allen was no where near as nasty as Fevola. He had personality. He was more like the charming con man compared to the psycho chicken. Allen was destined to be a nomad and loner always moving around, burning bridges wherever he went. But he played his best footy for us.

He was almost the complete forward. Unbeatable on leads, could take pack marks, crumb, play body to body, perfect ball handling skills and a great kick. His faults were, perhaps being too selfish at times and his forward defensive skills were deplorable. He could be inconsistent. He could do nothing for half the game then boot a half dozen goals in quick time. I heard he loved his food and if you look at photos of different stages of his career you can see lots of variation in his size.

What an entertainer. Makes Buddy Franklin look average. Not sure about Jimi Hendrix comparison, though.

Favourite moments are his sealer against the Eagles at the 'G and his kiss on his brother's cheek, that goal he hacked outta mid-air, countless bombs from the boundary line after heated "discussion" with the crowd in the front row, and the day he kicked something rediculous like 4.11 (I'm sure I'm it wasn't as bad as that, but that's how I remember it).

Was genuinely one of the few guys you could say you especially came to watch. The comparison (in general terms) with Fevola is a good one. Not many players that can entertain like he could around anymore.

He also had incredible acceleration in his first 2-3 steps if you watch closely, because of his height he had to play in front. Just for those first few steps he was deceptively quick.

Aah number 13 was perfect for Jako.

Surprised he was able to hold down FF given he was well short of 192cms...

But there is no doubt he was a star. My favourite player to go and watch as a young kid by a long way.

Allen was like Hendrix in terms of, he he came, he conquered for a short time, and then completely disappeared from view. 16 years later we still marvel at what he could do, if only he could have played full seasons!!

I had the pleasure of sitting down last night and rolling out the VHS 'The Demon Attack' (after aquiring a VHS player from Hard Rubbish collection), highlights of 1994. Jacko was absolutely on fire in the first half of that season. He was kicking bags of 6 and 7 every week. The calibre of goals was something to marvel at as well. Cork screws out of his arse, bananas and snaps galore. He was a gun!!! When he went off and was injured , the side suffered.

I think he kicked about 7 in his last game against Hawthorn didn't he? That Back injury finally got to him. If he had been still firing come that years finals....well who knows? Remember how good the Ox was that year....

That goal out at waverly in '94 against Hawthorn was just outrageous. Jeff Farmer was a similiar prospect in a lot of ways. White Hot or Terrible. If either got a goal in the first Q then it was a good sign.

I always wonder what he would have done to Fitzroy in R2, 1991 if he hadn't been dropped after we kicked two all day against the Eagles in R1.

Problem was that then Bennett, and later Cuthbertson, started kicking big bags so he couldn't force his way back into the side properly until DC lost form in the middle of the year.

Great memories of that 11 goal bitchslapping of Mick Martyn against North where he did the bicycle kick goal.

What a great thread.

The HBO show Eastbound and Down could be remade down here, but use AJ as the main character.

I have that entire game on VHS, it is an incredible Individual effort, cosidering they were all kicked in the first 3 Quarters & he gets reported!!

It was the intangible that made Jako tangible. Nothing about normal boring behaviours such as speed or aceleration. ;)

HaHaHa! Erm yes, He was as mad as a cut snake, but he did have some speed off those first few steps. And i am sure that big ass helped him knock a few players out of the way during a marking contest.

Did he whack Martyn? My memory is not clear but did Micky Martin chuck a wobbly and go mental at what Jackovich was doing to him on the scoreboard?

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
