I think they tried some new type of knee reconstruction which is common now. I'm no medical expert but I believe it was a record or close to record time recovery for the period.

He was a very talented player Steven Clark, but obviously his knees were shot after that season.

I remember when he did the knee an essendon mate of mine, had said "That's the reason they got rid of him" it was sad & ironic that he did it against his old club.

He also notched up his 100th goal in his 21st game which was against Collingwood at Vic Park a game we won by 9 points. We really had no right to win this game as we were languishing down the bottom of the ladder in '92 and the Pies were on top when we played them. That was a good win I think my dad was scared we would get bashed on the way out of the ground 'cause I was rubbing salt into the wound of the Maggie supporter by singing "Its a Grand Old Flag" all the way back to the car.

Jacko is the saddest story of all time. He could have been anything if only he could have played a full season. He would have been the first to kick 100 goals in a season for the Dees.

Or when against Collingwood he kicked a typically cheeky and freaky Jako goal and then pulled the front of his jumper over his face and spread his arms and wnet "flying" around the Collingwood backline. I can remember Mick McGuane get really pi$$ed off with the antics. Lovely stuff.

Ah Jako...at his best...mercurial and one of the best individual performers I have seen in the red and blue.

At his worst...he was lamentable. And you never know what you were going to get on the day.

If we can compare any modern player with Allen it would have to be Brendon Fevola. But Allen was no where near as nasty as Fevola. He had personality. He was more like the charming con man compared to the psycho chicken. Allen was destined to be a nomad and loner always moving around, burning bridges wherever he went. But he played his best footy for us.

He was almost the complete forward. Unbeatable on leads, could take pack marks, crumb, play body to body, perfect ball handling skills and a great kick. His faults were, perhaps being too selfish at times and his forward defensive skills were deplorable. He could be inconsistent. He could do nothing for half the game then boot a half dozen goals in quick time. I heard he loved his food and if you look at photos of different stages of his career you can see lots of variation in his size.

What an entertainer. Makes Buddy Franklin look average. Not sure about Jimi Hendrix comparison, though.

Favourite moments are his sealer against the Eagles at the 'G and his kiss on his brother's cheek, that goal he hacked outta mid-air, countless bombs from the boundary line after heated "discussion" with the crowd in the front row, and the day he kicked something rediculous like 4.11 (I'm sure I'm it wasn't as bad as that, but that's how I remember it).

Surprised he was able to hold down FF given he was well short of 192cms...

But there is no doubt he was a star. My favourite player to go and watch as a young kid by a long way.

Allen was like Hendrix in terms of, he he came, he conquered for a short time, and then completely disappeared from view. 16 years later we still marvel at what he could do, if only he could have played full seasons!!

Jacko was absolutely on fire in the first half of that season. He was kicking bags of 6 and 7 every week. The calibre of goals was something to marvel at as well. Cork screws out of his arse, bananas and snaps galore. He was a gun!!! When he went off and was injured , the side suffered.

I think he kicked about 7 in his last game against Hawthorn didn't he? That Back injury finally got to him. If he had been still firing come that years finals....well who knows? Remember how good the Ox was that year....

That goal out at waverly in '94 against Hawthorn was just outrageous. Jeff Farmer was a similiar prospect in a lot of ways. White Hot or Terrible. If either got a goal in the first Q then it was a good sign.
