I might be misreading this...

But according to afl.com Geelong traded the "mid first round" compensatory pick (pick #10 if used this year) to the Gold Coast for their pick #15...

From what I can see it wasn't attached to any other trade... So what the hell's going on? From what little I can see they, for no reason, changed pick 10 to pick 15... Obviously I've missed something. Can someone please clarify?

The mid round pick is actually the next draft pick after Geelongs first so it is actually about 25 this year, but potentially could be under 10 in two or three years time if geelong drop to the bottom of the ladder. Geelong obviously believed that they need to start the rebuilding now

Because they want to stockpile future picks to set them up for strong positions in future drafts.

If they use the pick in 2012 draft, it becomes pick 10, which they can use in addition to their 1st rounder.

Geelong could use it this way as well, but they are in premiership mode and want to draft players for now. Gold Coast on the other hand, has 9 of the first 15 picks and has no need for another pick around 25

Ok... So they traded the pick that would have been the one AFTER their first round pick this year to the Suns. So next year if the suns come last on the ladder, and end up with the #1 pick, they'll end up with pick #2 as well if they choose to use it? And in exchange the Cats get pick #15 this year. In al likelihood next year, they'll end up with pick #10-15 as their first round, and could use the pick then and end up with pick #11-16? That seems like a bad trade to me.

What's more if they waited a couple more years, they might indeed miss the finals at some point, and had they stuck with the compo, they'd have ended up with a two-for-one early pick?

My head hurts.

The comp pic can be used in future drafts as apose to normal pics. Because the Cats can still challenge now, they'd rather use pick 15 this year, as apose to pick 26?

GC want all their comp picks back because that enables them to have higher pics in future drafts, presuming they still have a bit of drafting to do and they probably wont be world beaters in their first few years.

No. Geelong have 2 picks for ablett.

One of those picks is the next pick after Geelong's first rounder.

The second is a mid round first pick. It's a pick after all the bottom 8/missed the finals teams have selected. That's the one they traded.

So in 2013, that will be pick 11. In 2010, with all the GC picks, that would be pick 18 if they chose to use it.

They traded with GC so they can use 15 now and develop him now instead of keeping 11 in 2013.

Easy way to describe it is this;

If Geelong wanted to use it this year, they get the pick straight after their first pick (which is pick 23), meaning that compo pick is worth pick 24. So, the traded it, for pick 15 in this years draft.

That means, if the Gold Coast want to use it this year, it is worth pick 24, but let's say they use it in 2013 (when the draft is of the standard format - Pick 1 for last, pick 2 for 2nd last, etc), if Geelong were to finish 10th, the compo pick that the Gold Coast picked up this year would be straight after Geelong's first pick, which would be pick 8, meaning the Gold Coast would get pick 9 for their compo pick.

It's very smart investing by the Gold Coast. They have 3 of those situations where they traded back a compo pick.

The pick retains the value it was this year, doesn't matter where Geelong finish in the next 3 years, it just goes lower down the order because there are no priority picks. So in 2013 it would be equivalent to pick ~#9-11 depending on how the new teams slot into draft order etc. (it would have been #9 this year without GC and priorities), I don't know if the AFL has made decisions on where exactly it will be in 2013.
