The Billie Smedts Thread

I think you may be right by bringing Gorringe into the equation.

It is very high to take a ruckman. Still, he's likely to be gone by pick 12.

I don't expect Gorringe to be available, but what I saw of him, I thought all class.

I think I'd go for Smedts over Lynch,,, and as you say, Cook or other could still well be available @ 32.

I still like Fitzgerald If we could Nab him @ 49 or 52. I just think he'd be a handy player.

Cook could easily be available at 32.

Lamb is an exceptional kick, but I'm not sure we need another small forward.

I think Lamb will be a talented player who can play in many creative positions around the ground from on-ball, half forward flank, Forward pocket, ruck rover. I have a strong feeling this boy will be one out of the box.

ive watched billie play in the APS a few times, and ive heard things about him - information you could call it.

most of you are wrong saying hes a defender, his primary position is a key forward. He played most of his time for the falcons and VIC.C up forward, but in the carnival, which was shown on tv, he played defence, and was his first full game down back. Hes a utility.

Also

Earlier on this year, i was having a chat with a MFC player - not willing to say who for obvious reasons. But i was speaking to him about billie smedts, and the demon said hes a gun player, but(polite version) hes and idiot. But i hope he can mature and fit in well at MFC - if he comes.

If you do some research about Billie Smedts, where his from etc. you might be able to find common background information and find who the MFC player is.

To be honest, I reckon I have a fair idea who it could be.

Edit: that link could confirm it.

There are a few on our list that played falcons though.

I woulda said a similar thing about the player in question at the same age.

I think they have 9/10/& 11 before ours.

Which makes me think he won't get to us. Still want him though.

Fwiw, I'd take on board that he's a bit of a gun and plays hard, reads play very well, utility - and this is confirmed from what I've seen, rather than other rumoured descriptions given in recent post. I prefer a bit of white line fever, swagger & confidence. I've always wanted it at Melbourne.

And for a team building ground floor up, it would be negligent not to take this.

Although your description sums up Darling quite well too!

How enjoyable is it going to be hating this GC mob in coming years?!

Yep, thanks king, didn't need it spelt out, I got it.

But it is still conceivable it could have been one of the others, as a few did play falcons & funnily enough all the falcons are from the same region!

I still maintain the player in question wouldve faced the same accusations at the same age.

Depends on your definition of "dckhead".

i meant specific region. eg. Warrnambool opposed to Ocean Grove. which is over 200km apart

but yes, i think you do know the player .

also, the questioned player did face similar description as a youngster.

I think we can move on now. Besides it shouldn't be too much of a concern. He wouldn't be the first to enterl AFL ranks.

The question is, if Darling and Smedts were both available at pick 12, who would we take?

(Assuming Lynch is unavailable, as he most likely will be)

If Atley or Caddy slid to us I'd take them.

I'd take Darling ahead of Smedts IF the footy dept was confident he could make it as a power forward. He's about the same size as Fevola and Neitz so I don't think his height alone rules him out of playing that role. If they thought he's more likely to make it as a medium sized forward rotating through the midfield I'd prefer Smedts. We are already stocked up with mid sized forwards.

I'd take Darling because he would fit straight in-Lynch- a longer term player will need a couple of years,IMO,due to lack of stamina.Smedts- I like but I feel we have four players still to debut- 2 of them -Blease and Tapscott could be competition straight away to Smedts along with Strauss, Bennell and the like. Whilst we need a Smedts type as a back up- I feel pick 12 - should be the best tall available- that is our current need. And that is why we traded Cheney I would have thought.

Reasonable case put forward. Although, on the flipside with Cheney being traded, McNamara delisted our depth for down back has eroded a little. Strauss is no guarantee either to make it - I hope he does.

Nothing against Darling, Lynch as I'm sure they are in the mix. As I've stated previously I think these two might go before pick 12.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
