Jones finished equal 13th with Bartram. He was 24th on votes per game.

Not sure that trading Jones is the right move just yet, especially when so much of our young midfield is unproven. Scully, Trengove and Jordie are the only ones who have really had any real exposure to the ones. Gysberts was awesome in his first two games but surely we should see a bit more of these kids before we move on a consistently good (if limited) player who is only 22!

Plus every premiership team has a few grunt players like Jones. I think he'd thrive in a finals atmosphere.

I have already seen enough of Scully, Trengove, McKenzie and Gysberts to be confident that they will be better than Jones. In fact, Gysberts aside, on their current output with no further development I would say they are already better rounded players.

It does not suprise me that he may not see himself nor does DB appear to see him in our future plans. If he went elsewhere he will get games and I doubt it will come back to bite us.

In regards to the voting, the host of the night said that each player was awarded votes for the game, however that did not necessarily mean they had to ge votes.

I was a little intoxicated, so from what I can recall:

* A score of 40 (or in the 40s) was the highest possible, and it meant you plaed an unbelievable game. incidently Green got 32 for a game, which was the highest of anyone

* A score of above 30 was a standout/superstar game, and not many reached that point.

* A score in the 20's was a very good game

* A score above 10 was seen as a good game

Most votes seemed to hang around the mid teens to mid twenties, best on grounds seemed to get 20-25.

If the players were no good, they got 0.

I do remember for one game that only 4 people received votes, and the highest may have been low teens.

As I said, I did have a few under my belt by then, but that is the best I can explain.

It was a great night, the first I have been too, and I will definitely go again.

I did find a strange piece of paper in pocket when I got up this morning, and it seems that I had given my 5,4,3,2,1 votes to the best girlfriends. Cant remember doing it, but found it quite amusing this morning, especially considering Pia was not on my list!!!!!!!!!!!

I reckon most of us on here would have picked the trifecta last night, but not necessarily got them in the correct order. Congratulations to Greeny, Chip and Rush for outstanding seasons, and many thanks to WJ for the regular updates. It must have been a great evening.

In regards to Nathan Jones surely he's still a required player for season 2011. Maybe from 2012 onwards he may struggle to get a game but whle the likes of Tapscott, Scully etc are still finding their feet I'd of thought Jones's experience and strength would very much be needed for next season and if we're any shot of finishing top 6 as Mike Shehan thinks we should.

Interesting that Miller seems to be the only player not wearing the team tie, thought that he might still want to feel part of the team until the end of the night.

he didnt even come out with the players that night

bell did though

didnt feel like he was apart of the team that night

it shouldnt be like that

The question is your probably right but how much is he therefore worth?

He is out of contract. Lets assume a starting 18 midfielder is worth a base salary of $300-350K. How many years contract would you offer him and how much money. I doubt he would take a 1 year deal and I doubt he would take the salary that we would offer over two which I will assume will be less than $300K being that he wont be starting 18.

I dont disagree with your position but it made more complicated by him being out of contract. The same could be said for Matty Bate.

top 6 ? MS is raising bar and putting the pressure on, isn't he ? that's equivalent to 13+ wins.

people should remember we still have a young side, yes they made ground in 2010, but we've lost Junior and we need youth to step up in the middle. DB wants better than 50% wins next season; and finals. how much did Carlton finish higher than last year ?

DB's last year of contract next year. can we expect any heat from media if we don't make finals? And will it be warranted?

All coaches collaborated to come to a score for each player.

There were quite a few 30's given - seem to score fairly harshly.

Maximum possible would be 880 (22 x 40)

Brad Green scored 295 in 22 games Av 13.4.

Col Sylvia 170 in 15 games Av 11.3

You raise a good point.

Hopefully an agreement can be reached for a 2 year incentive type deal. Base salary of approx $320K with generous bonuses for top 10 B&F finishes or something like that?

Yeah I thought MS was raising the bar a little high.

Personally I'm not even convinced we have to make the finals next year.

I'll be hoping for 10 wins as a pass mark min, obviously will be looking for signs of improvement and if we can get up to about 13 wins that would be fantastic!

As long as the club continues to show signs of improvement then DB should have nothing to worry about.

It was a great night, but most of all I liked the attitude that pervaded the speeches. All the players said they were excited about the coming years, and as was quoted earlier, Col Sylvia wanted to get out and play again this week. Don McLardy summed the determination to not only improve but go all the way when he quoted what he said was his favourite line, which comes from Alaska: "Unless you're the lead dog, the view doesn't change".

I mentioned that line to DB in a chat at the end of the night. DB said - yeah, you'll hear a lot of talk as we go into next year about being at base camp.

The FD know what's ahead of them, and won't be getting ahead of themselves to chase any quick glory at the expense of building a really solid team with depth and determination.

Can't wait for the next 3 years!!

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
