I would rather have Aussie playing in the ruck than Newton.

The selection this week of dropping Warnock i think is a bad sign for him. Is he in the future plans, is he simply just a horses for courses player, will he ask for a trade if the rumours of him being unhappy playing for Casey are true?

I have never been a Newton fan and I admit i have not seen him play recently, however could he be a late bloomer?? he is only 23. By drafting another kid, are you better with the devil you know?? I'm undecided. I hope for his sake the he puts in a blinder on Sunday.

Putting in 6 years for max return of say max 4 years "return" doesn't really make sense.

Newton is one of those guys who looks worse than he really is. Unfortunately for him (and us) that just means he's bad while looking terrible, instead of an ordinary-looking good.

Going by the selections I think Melbourne wan't to finish the season strongly. I don't think Warnock would be surprised he was dropped. He looked very frustrated and disapointed in himself at times last week.

I don't think it's a 'last chance' for a couple, no.

You could mount a case for Newton, but most of the others are best 22 or thereabouts.

As for everyone else, only McDonald won't be offered a 2010 contract IMO.

Johnson has played 8 games, averaging about 9 possessions a game and 10.5 hitouts. His season bests are 12 possessions and 14 hitouts.

On Sunday, Newton had 16 possessions and 9 hitouts.

Another fine example of how stats can be meaningless.

I never said PJ was competant. In fact, he's not. So to say Newton's a better player because his stats are bigger is flawed.

Also, those stats say nothing about intensity, effectiveness, or aggression. Which are usually lacking in any game from Newton.

Why play Newton then?

Try comparing Newton and PJ on a level playing field - the VFL. Both have a reasonanble number of appearances there this year. PJ is a dominant VFL ruckman, Newton is not. Hardly surprising given PJ is 199 cm, and Netwon is 193cm.

Newton should only be considered if he can become a forward who can help out in the ruck. At the moment he hardly rates as a solid forward in the VFL. Needs to be producing goals and assists at AFL level whenever he gets a game to be considered for any further extension. There is talk on the sites about him having improved, being a late developer and so forth. But until he can show credible performance as an AFL level forward, his prowess or lack of it in the ruck is irrelevant.

But Newton is a competent forward at VFL and PJ is not.

Yo be honest, I think comparing their form in the VFL as a level playing field, you might as well be comparing their performances on a basketball court.

We need both of them to perform at AFL level and that's where they should be judged.

Right now, neither measure up and haven't for some time.

Newton is getting a farewell game. If they got rid of Miller then Newton will definately go too. I also wonder if PJ being dropped had something to do with VFL eligibility and not stuffing it up if they go further in the finals.

PJ will stay on the list because he is the only ready made ruck back up if Jamar goes down. Spencer, Gawn and Fitzpatrick still have much development to go.

Would have preferred to see Bail remain in the team at the expense of Newton but that aside i think they got the ins and outs right.

Warnock will be disappointed but he should know the areas of his game he needs to work on. No-one likes being dropped or playing two's but i think the trade talk is a little far fetched. MFC will be very keen to hold on to him as back up for the incumbants at the moment. One injury to Frawley, Rivers, MacDonald or Garland and Warnock is straight back in so i see him being told to work really hard over summer and force his way back in.

Really want to see a spirited hard at it performance tomorrow from the boys. About time we knocked the Tasmanian Roos off.

I'd say this is the last hoorah for Juicey Newton, it's a shame, i had high hopes for him, in 07 I even bought an embroided number plate hat "Juicey", I used to wear to games when he was playing, now it's sitting in my closet in the smallest hope he'd turn out to be somewhat of a player...

If he hadn't grown to a certain size I sincerely doubt he'd be on an AFL list.

He could be a late developer ,similar to Jamar.He also could not get fit due to a back injury for his first two years.
