No, it is still only the mandatory three. Rookie upgrades now count as a pick. Having said that, I believe that we will move on at least four, not counting rookies.

Please correct me if i'm wrong, but if Junior is on the veterans list, then selecting him for another year will not make any difference to our quota of draft picks. It will affect how many rookie spots are available in 2011, but anyway we will possibly clean out our rookie list at the end of the season.

If Junior stays we can keep Miller on the rookie list.

He's 34 in October. If Junior and the club agree that he should stay on another year, and then he struggles physically or mentally in the first few matches, will we lose much if he pulls up stumps half way through the season? He might copy Simpson of North Melbourne who left the building half way through last year on his terms.

Junior retiring allows Brad Green to move onto the Veteran's List, thereby opening up a spot on the Senior List.

Tommy Mac and Stef Martin can go back on the rookie list if we want to persevere with them as Meesen and Newton are as good as gone. Bell and Miller have had their opportunities. That frees up four spots.

Then of course there may be other potential trades, delistings or retirements but I cannot see Warnock or Bate being among them.

That makes sense ID, but i have a feeling that Green can't go on the veterans list till 2012.

Why wouldn't Green be eligible?

Veteran Players

Under AFL player rules, each club may nominate or list any number of what are called Veteran Player’s.

In order to be eligible for classification as a Veteran a player must have been the age of 30 as at September 30 in the relevant AFL season and be on the primary list of the AFL club for at least 10 years or in the case of Port Adelaide since the inception of the club. From 2006 there is now no limit on the number of veteran players a club can list, as long as the player meets the required classification.

Bit harsh on Port, having to have had their veterans on the list for 13 years! (and I'm sure I could have phrased that slightly better....)

Is this going to be suggested every time we get into a list discussion???

They can't be rookied. They can be delisted. What happens after that is wide open, we have no claim on them. And in Stef Martin's case, we'd be severing his contract which the Club are very loathe to do.

As for the 4 spots that frees up, one of them goes to Jordie McKenzie, possibly another to Jake Spencer, leaving us just 2 picks in the draft. It will be very, very interesting to see how many we end up deciding we want.

I think we have to take a minimum of 3 players in the draft, but not sure. Jordie upgrade makes four. Spencer and the other rookies all look gone as we don't have room to upgrade them.

It will be interesting to see what happens, even Miller and Bell probably have some good footy left in them, its a healthy situation to be in for the club but there's gonna be some pain.

I think Martin has potential to stop the gorilla forwards once he gets his body right and a good pre-season behind him.

Must make 3 selections in the draft, but rookie upgrades are included as selections.

So absolute minimum we must upgrade Jordie and draft 2 kids.

Or upgrade Jordie and Spencer and draft 1 kid.

Meaning we need to delist 3 players minimum.

(including possible retirees - moving a player onto the veterans list will create a senior spot and although it uses a rookie spot it is unlikely to cause problems with Jordie moving up and all other rookies in the gun)

Thanks for the clarification E, that helps a lot. I can't see us getting rid of any of our list for a 3rd round draft pick.

So it will probably be:

IN: 1st and 2nd round picks + Jordie upgrade

OUT: Belly, Miller and Junior (retired)

ROOKIES: all new rookie list

Stability is good!

Quick misconception clear-up:

Filling the Veteran's List does not monopolise any rookie list spots.

The impact on rookies of having an empty veterans list spot is that you can nominate a rookie at the start of the year to be eligible for senior selection rather than just mid-year.

Unless the rule has changed, for each VL spot not used you can add an extra rookie to your RL. For each extra rookie on the RL, 1 of them can be nominated. So if we hypothetically had no VL players and 2 extra RL players (giving a total of 8) then any 2 of that group of 8 would be nominated to preserve our list of eligilble players for senior footy of 40.

I recall this topic coming up in earlier posts. Some members indicated Green wasn't eligible next year for the veteran's list. Maybe they misread the words 'in the relevant year' to mean 2010.

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had
