How did we manage to trade 3 draft picks for Pickett? Is that right? because it looks like we used pick 60 twice!

Player Name Original Club New Club Traded For

Byron Pickett and picks #54 & #62... Port Adelaide ...Melbourne... Draft Picks #28, #44 & #60

this is according to wikipedia...not to sure how this trade worked though...

I think that was pretty much it. So it was a Pickett for pick 28, plus we lost out on a few downgrades (44 goes to - 54, 60 goes to - 62).

In hindsight we should never have made that trade, but at the time it was a reasonable trade. A late second rounder for a quality player. Pickett added a bit to the side that we thought was getting reasonably close to a flag. But we found out we weren't and Byron enjoyed eating up his healthy pay cheque.

The trade was fine. His first year with us he was one of the recruits of the year. It was when the wheels fell off that he disappeared. We didn't get years from him, but there have been worse trades.

As for the thread. Every club has wasted draft years. We payed for a lot of success too. Remember how we were having on and off years? On our off years we rarely got close to the bottom of the ladder. In the one year we did, we got Sylvia and McLean, both of whom are doing a fair bit of good work (McLean has runs on the board) and have justified their selections in relation to their draft year.

Melbourne's draft history is far from poor. It's probably about the same as most clubs who have their horror selections. At least many of ours were due to injury, not incompetence in the recruiting department.

Hardly quality. A washed up overweight cameo player whose star faded quickly. Add little to MFC and took alot including his pay cheque. Should have been sacked for not turning up to a game after drinking the previous night. An embarrassment that would not be tolerated by the current football management. A bad trade.

Unless we re-drafted him, Stephen Powell came to us before 2002. I distinctly remember him playing in the 2000 Pre-lim and then kicking our first goal in the GF the following week. Unless i have read it wrong.

yeah thats correct...we initially traded him in 1999 for pick 35 as a straight swop...and actually traded him to st.kilda in 2002 pre-season draft

cheers!

Drafting wasn't an exacting science back in the nineties & early 2000's.

These days the depth of quality players is greater in the TAC cup & the research is much better.

The research is certainly better but the depth of quality in the TAC varies from year to year.

Outside a couple of obvious choices, 2003 and 2004 have been ordinary draft years indeed.

And if its reasonable to give a 5 year judging period then the jury is reasonably out on 2007 and beyond.

While talking about Byron Pickett, he has turned up in the WA Goldfields recently cleared from AFL Queensland (McKay) to the Kalgoorlie City Football Club in the Goldfields Football League.

Is yet to play but think his local debut will be this weekend coming, haven't spotted him in person, but the general talk is he's been in a pretty good paddock.

Had the local comp here talking since his clearance was granted, how he goes on the field time will tell.

Cheers Ian Dunstan Kalgoorlie WA.

Now Stephen Powell was a Great Trade. Let us celebrate the Good ones. I enjoyed having Pickett in the middle for 1 year.

Opposition players were genuinely scared to go near him. It was good to see Grunt in a MFC jumper...Yes it didn't last i know, but i enjoyed 2006.

What is a shame is that we did not start the Clean out after the 2006 season. We all thought we were close to a Flag. Oh so wrong.

We didn't trade him to St Kilda. We offered him a 2 year deal (because of his OP injury in 2001), and St Kilda offered him a 3 year deal. We got nothing for him, and he was a key part of our engine room.

This was a disaster for us - as was the Woewodin debacle, and resulted in an appalling 2003 in circumstances where we were a couple of kicks off a preliminary final in 2002.

Both players finished in the top 3 in their respective clubs B&F counts at least once over the next couple of years.

in the 1997 draft who the hell is matthew blake!??

not even in the Demons book , but heRE is something worrying

he was 39

pick 43 was Adam Goodes! 45 Matty Scarlett

From Demonwiki

From: Bendigo Pioneers, Selection 39, 1997 National Draft

Described upon his drafting as "Midfielder who was something of a ball-magnet in the VSFL this year. Covers a lot of ground. Endurance a strong asset."

Played 18 games with the reserves in 1998 but failed to play a senior game and was delisted.

Scarlett was a father son and out of our reach as he had committed to Cats. Goodes was a 17 year old and we had already taken one at pick one and were not eligible to take another.

Drafting will never be an exact science, but it is always fun to speculate what could have been a few years down the track. With what we have seen so far, would you still draft Morton ahead of Dangerfield or Cyril Rioli??

At this stage very happy with Morton in comparision to Dangerfield who is just a half forward at the moment.....Cyril, well he is just one out of the box.....I'll never admit to enjoying players at other teams but he is one. The draft is always full of this "what if we took this bloke' stories.

Overall our draft history back to 97 is not too bad.

Your correct on the trade terms with St Kilda but.....

Powell had a great 2000. Got OP in 2001 and was recovering and a shadow of himself in 2002. We were a couple of kicks off the PF in 2002 on the outstanding efforts of Yze and TJ. Powell and Woey were bit players in the that year. After one good year surrounded by stellar midfielders like Harvey and he dropped off the pace literally in 2004 and 2005. Certainly not worth the 3 years. I understand his OP condition continues to hamper his post AFL physical activities significantly.

Enough has been said about the Woey situation. A good ordinary player who got the most out of himself and won the B'low in 2000 as part of unsung blue collar midfield that year that included Powell, Leoncelli, Rigoni and the McDonald brothers. Got found out in top company and MFC did well to get a first round pick for a player whose playing time was fading.

In many ways its been down right appalling aided by Salary Cap penalties in the early years.

Have a look at all clubs through this period.......

Why do you think our drafting has not been so bad?

In 1997, our No 1 draft pick proved to be a lazy, talented footballer with a poor attitude and no leadership skills

The AFL burnt us in 1999 and 2000. We completely stuffed 2001 and we blew first round picks in 2002 on Nick Smith and Daniel Bell.

We had picks 3 and 5 in probably the worst draft ever...2003. We were lucky to trade pick 5 for pick 11 last year.

In 2004, we used a first round pick on a good VFL player in Dunn. We traded/wasted the second pick for 200cm rover in PJ who is also a very handy VFL player. And we got Newton with the next pick. We used two other first rounders on Beamer and Bate who have been fair at best over the journey.

In 2005, we took N Jones with our first pick and he is honest without being a star in his 5th year. We traded away picks for Pickett....enough said. We took Buckley with pick 53 and Bartram who is fair at pick 60.

There really is nothing to write home about our drafting even relative to other sides.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
