Can we make the 8

Featured Replies

Do we really want to make the 8 this year ? Do we want that attention. To finish anything under 5-6 is a waste of time. There may be some warm fuzziness to be had to do so but it will be very short lived. Making the eight per se is not a real goal...to make top 4 with a real chance to tilt is. Making finals is not a goal..its a path. Premierships are the goal and to do that consolidation of a good working and competitve team is the vehicle to do that. That team needs more consistency and skills than presently presenting.

Should we look to the 8 this year ? I dont think so. Lets spread some games around and build the base.

Finishing in the eight will be a great thing for the club, the players and the supporters. The demons are a force to be reckoned with and that will be part of our journey. It will send a message that the dees are coming. This side is a top eight side, that is where they belong.

Go Dees Attack

Indeed. Last years finals appearances have seemed to serve Brisbane and Essendon well this year.

Theres no point geting to the line to fall over it. Anyone who is more than a casual observer of this game will understand by now that the Demons are on the rise and are a September combatant of the future even without placing in the final 8. Personally id rather skip this years circus and pay more heed to core functionality than any tokenism. The reality is surely thatas a very young list we will tire towards the end of the season, especially for those with interupted preseasons.

Curious that both are beneath us at present

There is a time and place for things, this year isnt about finals. They will all know that we'l climb higher and with better purpose and ability in 2011. A cameo this year isnt warranted or needed.

Agree Bub. I said preseason that I hope Bails isn't distracted by a few early wins. This year is all about development, if we happen to sneak into the 8 it's a bonus

I think that is what Rogue was actually getting at BB59.

Considering MFC are 6 points away from being equal LAST does anyone still believe they can make the 8?... what happen to that ridiculous thread about MFC making top 4? And MFC are not certain winners against the Crows next week (remember WC & NM?)

I believe we can make the 8.

If and i meen if we had of beaten coll and bull we would be 5/3 what is your thought's .

No neg posters please.

Maybe if Hardwick was/is in charge. :)

Maybe if Hardwick was/is in charge. :)

Hardwick, Malthouse, Thompson....... it wouldn't matter Mono. Get off the jungle juice and wake up.

Melbourne are a developing team. If they win 8 or so for the year everyone will be saying they have shown solid improvement. Richmond win three games and you are calling for Bailey's head. I assume you are drunk.

No neg posters please.

Plenty of others have posted... but I have a question. Do you mean to say no negative posters... or no negativity? I can understand if you don't want people coming on and whining and moaning about how bad we've been. But just asking people not to post in the negative? Fair go...

And in answer to your question. No, we won't make the finals.

I'm just hoping we stay in touch and don't rack up the 9-10 losses that would keep us out of the race until the final couple of weeks. Interestingly, Toigs fans all over the place still think we're a chance to lose to them and go below them on the ladder.

I still reckon 8 and a half is an ok result... and is ahead of what Bailey himself predicted at the start of the year.

Non-negative post coming right up ......

YES, we can make the eight

In 2011.

No chance of the 8 this year, we have more chance of winning a third consecutive wooden spoon than making the 8.

Agree with this comment.

We won't win the spoon though. But if I had to place money on one of the two I'd be putting it on the spoon, not the 8. I just think our draw is too difficult to even contemplate finals.

Having said that, if we win next week we'll be 10th on the ladder (assuming Port loses today), ahead of Brisbane and Essendon.

I find myself agreeing with you again Titan.

"NO"

Our forward line is not up to kicking decent scores on a consistent basis.

It will have its days out but not enough to make the eight.

We are also 6 points away from being in the eight.

It was interesting listening to ABC radio yesterday afternoon, when Stan Alves and Chris Grant rated teams on a scale of E to A on their season so far, compared to what their expectations had been at the start of the year. A rating of 'C' was the pass mark. Stan rated Melbourne as B+ and Chris rated us B. Not surprisingly, both praised our back-half and midfield, but commented that our forward set-up (primarily meaning Jack Watts) is still a couple of years away. No mention was made of the current forward line absentees, LJ or Ricky Petterd.

I wonder how long it'll take you to realise that we won't make the top 8 this year

Until it is mathematically impossable i have faith and look to the future not the past.

Yeah, very curious!

*Very curious of West Coast to be down for so many years with those players. Our future Rivals, with Tiges, Blues, Dons.

I'm in no hurry this Year as we add the finishing touches to our list in this very good for Talls year.

crystalball25.gif I can see looking in the Crystal Ball, through the hazy purple glow, some traded out, with some important picks coming to the list for future strength.

A top 8 finish in Yr 2011, with a notrable return, of the sun of a gun, & return to old values.

A predicted strategy for the remainder should be to play & introduce our future, this season, with a view to put a big Pre Season into young bodies, & an early start of preparation to get away next year to a flying start.

We are also 6 points away from being in the eight.

"They" have also been making a steady decline down the ladder.

Until it is mathematically impossable i have faith and look to the future not the past.

It's mathematically impossible because we're not going to win our next 10.

Optimism overdose much

Essendon made it with 10 last year that is only 5 and a half to go.

Because St Kilda and Geelong had, what, 38 wins all up? That's out of 88 total wins for the season. That meant wins came by less often which means there were less to go around.

12 wins will pretty much guarantee you finals. We won't win 8 more.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
