I can't say I agree with the title of the thread, though, or with alot of the comments posted here. Equating all women who apsire to commentate football with Kelly Underwood is unfair, and claiming that women shouldn't commentate football is flatout moronic. Obviously there have been good woman commentators in other sports, and we've seen from journalists like Emma Quayle (an extremely insightful observer of underage talent in particular) and Caroline Wilson (prone to sensationalism at times, but in all a pretty astute commentator on the administrative side of football) that there are women who really, really know their stuff when it comes to football. There would be plenty of women out there who are eloquent enough speakers and possess enough football nous to justify a job as a commentator, Kelly Underwood just isn't one of them.

Excellent post, I particularly agree with this last paragraph. I'm not a fan of Underwood at all, but to dismiss all possible female commentators because of it is embarrassingly sexist.

The question posed was whether or not you enjoy having a female commentate on football. Labelling someone's opinion that contradicts yours as "moronic" I'd say is the ultimate achievement in moronic.

The reason people are calling you names is because you keep trotting out stuff like this. The issue most others in this thread have with Underwood is that she's a garbage commentator. Your issue appears to be that she is female.

Well?

You're likely one of the reasons alot of fans on this forum keep quiet cause they get shouted down with sarcastic arrogance.

It's just [censored] footy mate. Pull your head in and appreciate that we all follow the same club and the same game. Difference of opinion is a good thing.

Okay, how about this one:

Yeah this isn't a statement about women's involvement in football. They are crucial to the game's success. But commentary just doesn't sit right.

Or the thread title, "Female commentators"?

There's three instances.

Posted

Its not the fact that she is a woman, its just that she has an annoying tone to her voice, and comes out with too many cliches.

Posted

And I stand by that. If you don't like it that's your issue, not mine.

No problem with me. Just don't come crying when people start calling you a sexist, or moronic.

I also recommend Googling the definition of 'sarcastic'.

I wasn't pointing to this thread as an example. It was a general observation.

If I come crying you'll be the first shoulder I look towards, I promise you.

I have no problem with female commentators. However, I have a big problem with CRAP commentators. Once again I find myself wondering how hard can it be to learn the players' names?

That sums it up pretty well, but its not just the players names. Yesterday's call was riddled with errors from all the commentators.

I have a serious Issue with the thread title.

I implore women to be involved in football and have no problem with a female commentator.

Kelli Underwood is the problem.

It's been grating me for a while, and I'm not sure if anyone else noticed it; but, she just seems to be a "poor mans McAvaney" utilising all his cliches and mannerisms. Would probably warm to her more if she had her own style, and showed a knowledge of the game - commentating (with cliches) is just calling the game.

Still she's better than anything that Malcom Blight comes out with - he just seems to get more bitter with every game. Robert Walls and Brian Taylor don't lift the commentating bar much higher - hmmmm, maybe she's not as irrating as I thought.

Posted

Robert Walls, Andy Maher, Michael Christian etc. are all terrible, terrible commentators - but you don't preface that by saying "Male commentators."

Agree with E25, thread title should be changed.

Underwood is absolutely putrid as a commentator.

Posted

loved it when she said "out of bounds on the full, the umpire is throwing it in"

and

"passes to McDonald, no Bate, no it's Bartram"

My wife who hates football said as she walked into the lounge this commentator has a terrible voice.

I don't like female commentators. Sexist ? I don't know, nor do I care - well, a little bit. There are some things that I prefer men doing and calling footy is one of them. It's such a politically correct world we've become that one can't even dare point out something as innocuous as this without being labelled "sexist". Ever heard of a "preference" ?

My Mother doesn't like female aeroplane pilots and doesn't warm to the notion of female funeral directors. I'll let her know that she's either wrong or "sexist".

There are some dreadful commentators around and she is just one of them, the fact she is a Woman has nothing to do with it. I hate the Brayshaws and the Hunts when they try to out shout each other and finish up sounding like a pack of drunken D/Heads. There are just too few who actually are easy to listen too.

I don't know if anybody noticed last night but after the swans - brisbane game Dunstall said it was a good win by the SAINTS!

I couldn't believe it, had to rewind and play over and over again. It was terrible

I agree that things are getting overly politically correct, but sometimes people go too far the other way: someone will call out something that genuinely is racist or sexist, and others will shout that person down for being a PC fascist.

Case in point: you'll get some people who'll defend Kelli Underwood, saying that it's great to see a female commentator. They don't mention or care that she's crap at the job, as they hope that her position signals the start of the major networks "correcting" the gender imbalance "issue" and putting more women into the role, so that the male-to-female commentator ratio is more even. THESE people are a good example of political correctness gone mad. Replying to a thread which is essentially arguing that Kelli Underwood is proof that no woman should ever commentate, and pointing out the idioicy of this, is not.

I don't take issue with the fact that P-Man's argument is politically incorrect. I take issue with the fact that it is flatout stupid. He is saying "women can't commentate" and he's backing up that assertion with precisely bugger-all. I'm not sure if either of you can fairly be labelled "sexist", because neither of you have bothered to elaborate on your positions or try to justify them in any way. All you've done is said "I prefer male commentators, and I don't care if you think that's sexist", while his position isn't even that developed; his line of argument basically equates to "NO!!".

...pertinent analysis of Kelly Underwood...

Completely spot on post.

Ignore the fact she's a woman. She just sucks, in every possible measure.

Thats it.

It does not matter that underwood is a female it is just that she is a shocking commentator.

I hope no one gets stuck into the female water boys or trainers.

I can't talk for anyone else, or in this case the other poster you're referring to, but my position is very simple: I don't like female callers. Whilst I also find Underwood to be a terrible caller and I won't add to the obvious, I wouldn't go as far to say that all female callers would be terrible. Just that I don't warm to them.

As I stated earlier, it's called a "preference". I don't need any more "reasons" than that.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
