Aussie's injury

Featured Replies

I have a friend who is an athletics coach. He says that 'highly tuned' athletes are far more likely to pop a hamstring than normal people.

Although that sounds unexpected, it really isn't. I mean, when's a guy who sits on the couch all day going to exert himself enough to injure a muscle. More Exertion = More Chance For Injury.

Same injury keeps repeating, not a few months but 12 and getting longer

It's not the same injury. Most of last year he was out with a KNEE injury. Now recovered/repaired. And even this time, the club have said it's the other hammy.

Not to say there aren't injury management issues that he and the club aren't going to have to address to try and minimise a repeat, but at least let's get our facts straight.

Agree - let's not hit the panic button

Todd Viney was plagued by hammys early and got past it - it can be done

Beamer was also plagued by leg injuries over the last 2 years, and now things seem OK. Also Watson the cricketer had Hammy issues, and evething OK now. It can be beaten.

Wishfull thinking while youre right about the knee this is the fourth hamstring that i've counted

Have you been counting imaginary hamstrings?

A setback during rehab is not another hamstring injury.

Fully rehabilitating the injury and returning to 100%, then doing another hamstring injury is the worry.

So far this has happened twice, once on each.

Not yet cause for concern.

Wait and see on Aussie.

Very early in his career to be writing him off.

I recently heard an interview with Shane Watson and he said the main reason for his hammy/back issues was his lack of core strength. He would go to the gym but only work on the muscles that could be seen (biceps, triceps etc)and his core was not strong enough to support his outer muscles.

Might be something to look into for little Aussie

Come to think of it, I've never had it articulated like that, but I suffered the same thing at aussie's age.

Since my core has developed these problems have disappeared.

Obviously I've only played amateur footy, but maybe there is quite a bit of merit in what Watson said.

Developing your core is so important. I'm a bit of a runner, and I often find that my best form of injury-prevention and enhanced speed comes from core work.

is that best done by pilates? if it is does anyone know if the MFC do any pilates training?

Makes perfect sense when you think about it doesn't it, build up strength from within & then to the extremities.

Particularly for the more solid boned physique.

They do. Or they did.

I remember Brock in an article talking aboout doing Pilates and yoga and how it was weird at first, but helped build the core.

Something like that.

I hear these days a lot of teams use really diverse training methods to build up a strong core and wrestling is a very popular one at the moment.

The sandpit that has been built for the doggies is apparently good for this too, as well as better for the joints.

I think we'll have one of these at AAMI park. Might be wrong though.

Dean Laidley has had many of the Port Power boys in the Sandpit over summer apparently to toughen them up.

Yes, & Yes, & more.

IMO, everyone is an individual & until there is a DNA test that tells in advance what to expect with individuals, then in Sport, injuries will be the most reliable information to chronic weakness that needs specialist work.

  • PREVIEW: Brisbane

They really had me fooled when I picked them with great confidence to beat the Bombers at Gather Round last week. I should have recognised that nothing is more quintessentially Melbourne than defeating the undefeated early premiership favourite one week and losing to a winless cellar dweller on its way to establishing a record losing streak the next.
