Burgo's Phantom PSD & Rookie Drafts

Featured Replies

The AFL's Burgo has come out with his own Phantom PSD and Rookie Draft entitled "The final intake: who your club could pick"

http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tab...57/default.aspx

I won't dwell on his entire deliberations  but the following part is relevant to the MFC:-

NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft

1 - Melbourne - Joel Macdonald (Brisbane Lions)

2 - Richmond - Dylan Grimes (Northern Knights)

3 - Fremantle - Adam McPhee (Essendon)

4 - Sydney Swans - Daniel Bradshaw (Brisbane Lions)

5 - West Coast - Simon White (Subiaco)

6 - Port Adelaide - Cameron Cloke (Carlton)

7 - Essendon - Michael Barlow (Werribee)

NAB AFL Rookie Draft

Round one

1 - Gold Coast - Sam Iles (Box Hill Hawks)

2 - Gold Coast - Joseph Dare (Geelong Falcons)

3 - Gold Coast - Guy O'Keefe (Western Bulldogs)

4 - Gold Coast - Daniel Harris (North Melbourne)

5 - Gold Coast - Luke Ablett (Sydney Swans)

6 - Melbourne - Michael Newton (Melbourne)

7 - Richmond - Luke Thompson (Geelong Falcons)

8 - Fremantle - Josh Donaldson (West Perth)

9 - North Melbourne - Majak Daw (Western Jets)

10 - Sydney Swans - Jack Weston (Gippsland Power)

11 - West Coast - Mark Hutchings (East Perth)

12 - Port Adelaide - Derick Wanganeen (Port Adelaide Magpies)

13 - Hawthorn - Matt Fowler (Gold Coast)

14 - Essendon - Serhat Temel (Calder Cannons)

15 - Carlton - Matthew Panos (Norwood)

16 - Brisbane Lions - Mitch Golby (Gippsland Power)

17 - Adelaide - Alex Carey (Glenelg)

18 - Collingwood - Scott Harding (Brisbane Lions)

19 - Western Bulldogs - Josh Dyson (Eastern Ranges)

20 - St Kilda - Tom Hill (Northern Knights)

21 - Geelong - Mitch Fisher (Geelong Falcons)

Round two

22 - Melbourne - John Meesen (Melbourne)

*Sigh*

out of interest, how can players who didnt get picked up in the ND get picked in the PSD ie dylan grimes? i thought PSD was only for players who had already been afl lsited?

Thought wrong ;)

The PSD is now a glorified delayed 16th round of the National Draft.

The players selected might be on slightly different pay conditions, but other than that...

very strange situation to have, given that clubs some clubs passed in the later rouns of the ND meaning they passed up the opportunity to pick up a few of the players.

perhaps they decide they want to do more research?

I'm confused deanox, it's been that way pretty much the whole time - why do you think it's strange now?

Godfrey, Simmonds, Woey, Gill, Pitt, Martin and Jurrah all came from the PSD not to mention countless other players to other clubs

What makes it strange is that previously, listed players could not nominate for the national draft e.g. Luke Ball would have been forced in to the PSD. With the change in rules this year, the PSD is now just an extension of the ND. It does allow players _some_ degree of control over where they end up, but not much. Seems pointless to me.

But to answer your question deanox, yes, it's very much a 'just in case' mentality. In the example above, there's nothing to have stopped Richmond from taking Grimes with their last pick in the ND, but this way they can see how he trains etc, and gives them an opportunity to see what else may pop up in the mean time.

Is anyone happy that Newton is predicted to be obtained?

NO, had his chances & failed. But with a stronger forward line, maybe, just maybe things might change.

The PSD seems close to meaningless now to me.

I reckon OOC/delisted players should all be forced into the PSD. No ND nominations. Then you'd have more interest. Plus it could well get more trades done in trade week.

I'm extremely happy to get MacDonald for nothing in the PSD, he is proven at AFL level and unlucky to get delisted by the Lions. As for the rookie draft picks, purely MelbourneFC's prerogative, I'm willing to back whatever they decide.

I'll answer that at the end of the 2010 season if it's all right with you :D

You never know, he may grab his chance with both hands and become the player we were all hoping for after all. :P

He played all year last season then picked up an injury for their first finals game and then didn't get picked for their second. He then requested a trade back to Victoria, they were unable to get it so he decided not to extend his contract.

I prefer that version because they didn't delist him ;)

The Grimes one hurts. Geez I hate the Toigs.

They delisted MacDonald because he stated he wanted to return to Victoria! I don't think it was because they didn't think he was good enough?! Well, of course they didn't - they recruited Xavier Clarke

Hopefully the Tigers do screw up and trade D Grimes for Newton.

I think we have done very well with the PSD. Again.

I also think we've got the best available. :)

Hadn't heard that version, assumed it was a financial thing or a list management blunder. Either way I'll take it.

With no disrespect intended to Junior Junior, the PSD is really a non event these days and PSD#1 seems hardly the trump card it used to be in negotiations.

Mind you I am happy with Martin and Jurrah. But it rarely grabs a bigger fish.
