I don't understand that logic.

He was offered less money, so looked around for another club that wasn't offering more than us?

He didn't want to play for the Red and Blue, he now becomes one of "them"

*cough* looked around for another club that wasn't officially offering more than us...

Mclean, Jones, Moloney.

One of these 3 had to go, they are too similar and can't be played in the midfield at the same time. Hence why Brock was tried in the forward line towards the end of the year. If you break it down Brock was the right choice to move on.

Of the 3:

- Jones is the youngest.

- Moloney kicks it the furthest

- Jones & Moloney are both faster than Brock

- Jones is seemingly the most durable (based on availability)

- Moloney is the hardest

- Brock may have been the most consistent over the course of their careers but Moloney went past him in terms of value for mine this year.

Mcleans uncle and gradfather played for Cartlon and they would have splashed big $$$ for him and a cushy box stacking posiition at visy.

Add to this Scully and Trengrove next year it makes sense to squeeze one of those 3 out.

Davey on the other hand must be retained.

I'm really going to miss Brock McLean. :(

He gave his heart and soul to the Demons. And even gave us a large amount of his own money for the Debt Demolition.

Yes you will miss him for another 65 days until the Draft, after that you will be excited.

Yes he did give his heart and soul to the club, he hasn't got much left to take to the Scum now does he?

Our football department wanted him gone too, otherwise there is no way it would happen so quickly and include an announcement 3 weeks before Trade Week actually commences.

If we still wanted him, we'd have talked him into staying, or at least tried.

What I'm most worried about is Carlton reneging, but i don't think that'll happen.

Good Luck Brock. Spent some time with him in Thailand and a recent club function. An absolute star of a bloke and i'm shattered he is gone but the club is bigger then the individual. No point crying over spilt milk. If a player doesnt want to play at your club then send them on there way as quick as you can cause bad feelings can spend like a cancer in a playing group.

This is it.

People have screamed for the club to be ruthless and this is it. Ruthless.

It would've been a tough call to make as Brock was a pick 5, a good player and a fan favourite but the easy decision was to sit on our hands and hope to hell Mclean, Jones and Moloney would work.

How 3 tough but slowish mids could work, might work, it won't work. Make the call. Sell.

Beautifully said. If the club is doing what it appears to be doing (that is, starting to construct our ideal side for 5 years time), it's a much smarter move than stockpiling an abundance of 'yeah he's slow but he can find the pill' footballers who reach an age where we can't move any of them on. Is Brock going to be in our ideal side when he's 29/30 and has lost another couple of yards?

Young players are having more and more of an impact anyway. Take Brock for example - in six years time many may look at him and say he was a player who peaked when he was 21 years old.

I'm not [censored] off, I'm worried that we're putting all our eggs into this mythical 6 year basket. Who the hell knows what's going to happen 6 years from now?

The idea that we'll win a flag in 1-3 years is more of a myth!

We can't pick up anyone over the age of 21 because we won't win a flag for 6 years according to the club.

I know it suits your purposes to misrepresent the position, but as quoted it was 4-6.

We also don't know when that was mentioned - if this year is year one it means 2012-2014, more likely 2013-2015.

That means the sixth year is the furthest point you could pick.

If you want to have a dig at the Club that's cool, but be fair about it.

This also means we should probably get rid of Warnock, Davey and Moloney, since none of these guys will get a game when they reach 32

Anyone who can't play in our next premiership is expendable.

However, you have to balance out some short-term objectives too.

I'm all for rebuilding, but this whole clock/window/hourglass theory is becoming a bit of a joke.

The way we're tracking, the Gold Coast will win a flag before us <_<

Just because you want a flag sooner doesn't mean we can actually get one then.

Think about when our most exciting talent will be at their peak. When is that and who are we going to lose by the time they come to fruition? Given that we don't have many older players, the answer's not much.

What if Watts is the next Newton?

I doubt he'll be the next Newton but given the current list, if he doesn't come a KPF we're screwed.

This is why we need to unearth another KPF, and fast.

More likely that once he was leaving and pick 11 was put on the table we jumped at the chance and officially announced it so there was no wriggle-room :P

DB is a loser, hes been there 2 seasons, and the rebuilds going to take 4 to 6 yrs, hes trying to delay the obvious, its gona take more time trust me, hes a loser, and for wise men like WJ , you were wrong.

was looking around blues forums to see what they think on the trade and they had a thread about mclean being up for trade on the 15th sep! how were we so far behind?!

there were mixed opinions from mclean being a steal at pick 11 to not being worth pick 27. some of them consider him to be our best player though, lol?

4-6 years is realistic for us. In 4 years Watts and Scully will be 22 and they're going to be key to us winning any flag - to expect more earlier is very optimistic.

Brock is not getting any quicker and who knows where he'll be at in 2014 - as Hannibal has pointed out, look at Luke Ball.

Brock goes to Carlton, they get Waite and Warnock playing and are contenders next year - it's not that hard to understand.

It's a win-win-win deal for Carlton-MFC-Brock.

Other clubs are paralysed by inaction or trying to screw out deals at trade time - it's great that we've got a clean major deal done.

whos pick 11, just another face in the crowd, baileys won 7 out of 44 games, hes a loser and his record proves that, unless we pick burgoyne up how a we getting fast tracked, WERE NOT, just another delay, BUT WHO CARES, its only been 46yrs, ANOTHER 4 to 6 yrs wont hurt, they must be joking.

for someone with a name delicious Jurrah I find it Ironic you are getting stuck into the rebuild. Brock's gone get over it, Look at Brock's body and game style in 4-6 years he may be getting around using a frame so let him go, pick 11 in the last uncompromised draft will help, in 4-6 years we should be close to the strongest Victorian Club, hopefully that translates to a premiership!

I'd also be willing to bet you were calling for Clarksons head a few years ago when he was going through a rebuild. Leave Bailey alone he has done many great things for these clubs, time people start realising the CLUB is bigger then the individual. Individuals are just assets and you cannot afford to be centimental ie Neil Daniher.

It has been a long time since Brock McLean has been one of our Best Players. That is a cold Hard FACT.

We wanted him to be one of our Best, as did the Club. But it wasn't happening.

When did he last "Impose" his name on a Big Game???

This is not a holiday Camp. I want to win Flags, & Brock is not fit enough to do that....

Pick 11 mean we get 3 first Round picks next month.

Brock Mclean looked like a clapped out old car on the field this year sad but True. He must have known a pay cut was on the way.

This ain't the 80's, want loyalty get a dog.

The young players will appreciate the club is doing everything they can to setup an ideal list and having 3 slow inside midfielders does not work.

Isn't that the same as wanting him gone?

If we can get pick 11 for him and he wants to be at the blues, then we want him gone?

As opposed to - 'he walked out and there was nothing we could do to stop it and had to take what we were given and the whole club is in disarray and Bailey is a terrible coach and the club stands for nothing and the sky is falling' melodrama?

This is close to the best news I have heard for some time. We all loved McLean for the fact that he bled for the club and tried his best. The fact is that his best isn't much good. He is OK but will never be a star and in my opinion would really struggle to be in our best 22 next year. I only get to see most games on TV being interstate and I have followed Melbourne for a long time - the one player I seem to always be yelling at in my living these days is Brock. The kid just makes far too many mistakes for someone who we rely on to have the ball in his hands.

Having said that, it would be the worst news ever if we lose Davey. He is our best player for f##ks sake!!!

As I have said before, anyone who believes Brook was not pushed is smoking the good stuff.

Well done to DB, BP and the football Department. A perfect trade. We now get the best two classy, quality outside mids (Scully & Trengrove), plus the chance to trade and recrute for another tall KPF to develop with Watts and Jurrah (pick 11) and the opportunity to trade for the likes of Junior Davey or Lovett (pick 18).

Simply outstanding list management!!

Finally someone is running the club with the intellegence, lack of emotion, streagth and realistic attitude to take us to a premiership. This is the what I have longed for and also the first time I have seen it at the MFC in 30 odd years of fruitless supporting.

I could not be happier with the performance of our FD since the turnover in board, CEO and coaching staff.

I am more exited now than at any point since at least 2000.

at least we were winning games in 2000, 7 out of 44, yeah Dean Baileys the man, lets extend his contract.

I say again Frogshit.... show me where you posted that in your argument. Have I berated you for having an opinion - You don't like the decision, and resent it, and that's the crux of the matter. Don't dress up your opinions as facts and expect others to swallow them. Your analogy with Richmond and your criticisms of pushing success further away are pure hysteria.

My sarcasm was obviously lost on you, so let me explain it to you in simpler terms.

I've supported the club's quest to rebuild the list, and was a big advocate of tanking.

I completely understand the 4-6 year statement, but to me that does not coincide with the Lake or Burgoyne inquiries (that's where the sarcasm re Burgoyne and Davey came in), both excellent players but both likely to hit 33 before we win a flag according to the club. Now if you're 6 years away, it is unlikely that you're only missing one or two key elements from your list, and hence topping up the list makes no sense. We traded away a 23 year old, who apparently is surplus stock, for more picks. That screams kids kids and more kids to me, not "let's chase the big players". Now maybe we did that to [censored] other clubs off and raise the stakes, maybe we were hoping to score a freebie in the PSD (dream on), or maybe as I've said, the 6 year timeframe is something we're using to justify questionable moves. And if we really are 6 years away, should we maybe move on someone like Davey, who has reached top market value but is going to be 32 when we're planning on winning one?

I note with interest that following Hawthorn's premiership victory last year, the official rebuild phase was shorter than it is this year (according to Bailey and co on the radio) when St Kilda, led by Nick Reiwoldt, are playing off in a grand final. Are we just following whoever is on trend at the moment, hoping to fluke one along the way (see Richmond comment), and is there a risk that we'll be overtaken by a club like the CG (even Cam Schwabb made a comment about this on his twitter page)?

I wasn't being hysterical, I was being sarcastic after what was a long and very unpleasantly surprising day. Again, my deepest apologies for confusing and irritating you to the point where you had to 'hysterically' reply to my comments

I'll wait 6 years for a flag, as long as we don't contradict this plan along the way as a means of justifying questionable moves. McLean would not have left because he didn't want to wait 6 years (he's only 23!), he would have left because the club told him he wouldn't get a game in 6 years. Fine, so be it, but don't go chasing 27 year olds if you're getting rid of 23 year olds with the vision that maybe in 4 to 6 seasons they won't be part of our starting midfield (hedging our bets on kids yet to be drafted worries me, but that's another story altogether).

Jaded I have got to the stage I don't even read your opinions. Just scroll down to the next one everytime I see your name. Can't be bothered waisting my time with your banta.

On no, whatever shall I do?!

Holy [censored]!

I just got back from Sydney today and this is the first footy news i hear? What the hell is going on?

Very Disappointed but I think we have to hand it to dafatcat at the start of this thread he stuck by his guns even though he was copping a heap of [censored]. Good work mate.

I just hope pick 11 develops quickly.

I as well come back after a little sojourn and..whoa there buddy...are we on the right stage coach here..lol

Well.. its certainly interesting isnt it. Hannibal & Co.. I love this time too ..lol..well if youre not in finals that is.

SO many posters ...so much emotion...so very littel reality or common sense. There is some and I wont embarrass you by naming..you know who you are ;)

Firstly. Thanks Brock for your time at Melbourne... you now join an illustious lot who have defected from Melbourne to Carlton.. and only one do I forgive.. all hail Barrass :) Still good luck in your endeavors and thanks for the donation.. no really..thanks !!

Dont really care why he's going I simply look at the positives, Still if he left for money...good faustian luck with that. If he left for a run in a possible grand final.. again good luck with that... but we'll win one before that lot will ;) If he left because he didnt really like the way Bailey runs things....then the sooki-la-la queue is >>>>>> way !! :D

Im over it already. Dissapointed in many ways too but more in that he never really quite emulated his better games for nearly long enough.I too thought he would amout to more...but he hassnt. Such is life and on we move.

To garner pick 11 is really pretty good all things considered. As others allude we can now have our cake and eat it too and probably spring for a few frothies while we're at it

Its about the CLUB...about the game...and then the player.

Seems at long last this club is getting its act together and proceeding in that manner.

Well done to all involved at the MFC.. Go Dees

There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
