And it certainly isn't near the equivalent of a 1st Rd pick this year.

I would give that and a player (depending on the player) very quickly.

The only problem is Hawthorn have Pick 9 and no reason, other than their desire for a backman, to not give that pick to PA.

I'm a cynic, and I think Burgoyne's management are using us as leverage against PA to get a deal over the line with Hawthorn.

IMO it's blatantly foolish to even expect Burgoyne to be anywhere near his best footy from a couple of years ago (and has been average ever since) as well as the fact that his knee seems to be very flimsy with apparently not much cartilage left. Lets draft Burgoyne because he was a great player a couple of years ago. That's more foolish IMO. No point getting excited about a 'has been player', when we can use pick 18 on a decent KPF (Panos, Griffiths, Carlisle) who will still be coming into their best football when we start to mean business (as opposed to Burgoyne who's career will almost be over).

Sure it will be a higher risk this year at 18 to pick up a KPF, given the so-called depth of the draft, but it's an even greater risk to pick up a player who would add to a surplus of midfielders in our team and for that player to have questionable fitness. Hence why i would take him in the PSD or for a lower pick. And i think you are getting too caught up in the media hype of a shallow draft, as this doesn't become known until a couple of years down the track.

He is not even close to a top 5 pick. Hasn't played consistant footy since 2006 and he is a front runner, you wont find him banging in when were 30 points down. Don't get carried away with the hype of a player like him. If he falls through to the PSD then maybe consisider if there are no other options. Just sore him on tv and he is on crutchers, it has to be a worry espicially when he is asking 500000 to 600000 over 3 to 4 years

Everything about trading is suspicious. We are a chance to get him and until their is none I will continue to have hope. Anyone who thinks that Port's best player isn't worth a top 5 pick in a weak draft are kidding themselves. The only way he won't be worth a top 5 pick is if his knee is completely stuffed and I'm sure the Hawks, Bombers and Dees will find out for sure if his knee is up to it or not.

Fair point above. This time 2 years ago there was ALOT of talk about one Chris JUDD possibly becoming a demon...not Blue. At the time I was in for more surgery with a rather well known surgeon who looks after many AFL footballers, he had just seen Judd and his groin tests and believed he had the worst case of OP he'd ever seen. Said without surgery he was stuffed here forward. Well no surgery and perhaps the surgeon was right early days as Judd struggled to recapture form, but 2 years on, another All Australian and some great form and leadership I'd happily take a "risk" of his dodgy groins going forward.

Too hard to know about S Burgoyne's knees unless we're inside the Club - if they're keen let them chase him. And to mention Templeton's knee's - I'd have thought surgery has come a little way in that time - I know it has more my knees.

He's inside and outside and has been very effective in run-with/shut down roles. He'd be in our best 3 players the day he walked in the door and I also agree that a fit Burgoyne would just about have us playing Finals next year. Momentum is a wonderful thing around a club.

We should have beaten Richmond and Sydney, and tanked greatly against Carlton and North, not to mention the injuries we had late in the year. Outside the top 6 the competition is crud. The Bombers made the Finals on 10 wins.

Why supporters bother to worry about a player's knees when we've medicos to do that is beyond me. If we want him it's because we're very confident in his body to play 80+ games of footy.

I don't think we'll get him, but would love to pick him up. I do think that we're very useful to his camp strategically, but I also think he's showing us respect due to his cousin - Aaron Davey, past premiership teammate Josh Mahoney and perhaps a good association with Bailey.

Not enough. The good thing is that I don't think Hawthorn or Essendon have the picks that Port would be after either. Time will tell. If I was Port I'd be trying my hardest to keep him that means no trade.

Pick 18 and Jamar isn't great for them but if Hawthorn cannot do a deal that is what I would offer. 1 and 2 are off limits, it would have to be out of Jones, Jamar, and Rivers to be traded.

my key reservation is at what price does he come, both financially and from a trade point of view. 600K was mooted in the paper i think. this is too much. sets a precedent. very few players in the league would get 4yr 600K contracts. unheard of. and also what we have to give up. port will want one of our top picks or a one of our best 3 players. grimes, morton, frawley or perhaps davey/sylvia. no thanks if that is the case

Shaun Burgoyne has told Port he wants to be traded to a Melbourne club and will not re-sign.

Port has said they will only do a deal if it works for them.

Burgoyne has gone on to nominate Hawthorn, Melbourne and Essendon as his preferred destinations and will go in the PSD if need be.

Hawthorn have said they are open to trading any of their draft picks, without being specific.

Andrew Lovett has told Essendon he is keen to be moved on.

That is all that is being presented as fact. Beyond that there is mountains of speculation on what will/won't, can/can't happen and conspiracy theories on:

- Burgoyne's knee being beyond repair with Port trying to peddle him before anyone realises and

- MFC's position with PSD pick 1 being used as leverage by Port & Burgoyne's camp to get a good deal at a preferred destination

My concern is that his best years are behind him and what we will have to give up to get him.

His value is so high on the open market that I feel he'd cost too much for his return to be worth it for our club specifically.

He'll produce straight away, but will he still be producing in 2 or 3 years' time when we should be seriously challenging? Will the players we'd be required to trade for him?

Bearing in mind, we won't get him in exchange for Newton, Bell and pick 34. Its just not going to happen.

I'd take him in the PSD in a heartbeat though.

Well Hawthorn have Mark Williams who IMO is underated as a goal kicking forward who isnt getting a regular spot at the hawks

Essendon i am not so sure have much to offer except Lovett

We really dont need to do anything to get him if thats if he chose to become a demon

depends on what our FD had in mind before burgoyne was available

if hawks want a genuine backman i dont see how they will have the resources left to get burgoyne unless they get rid of a starting 22 player.
