Where have you seen him BS?

Why would he drift, TD?

I he may be right in the mix for 2.

Same reason Daniel Rich and Mitch Robinson drifted last year and why Lance Franklin drifted in his draft. Whether some clubs are shopping for certain players in certain positions or wanting to draft home grown talent someone always seems to drift in each and every draft. As Martin isn't super quick, ala Morabito or Rohan and isn't as much of a goal kicking midfielder, ala Trengove, Cunnington or Moore and there's only a few top KP players available, ala Butcher and Talia. Throw in Lucas (WA) and Tapscott (SA) who West Coast and Port might be more keen to consider at picks 7 & 8 I just feel Martin might be one to go around the pick 10 mark rather then pick 5 mark.

Saying that I might be totally wrong, but it's just a suspicion I have.

I don't see how Martin is supposed to be slow. Harrington said he's quick and he looked quick on the video too.

Also Rich, Robinson all slid for different reasons. Buddy was/is a fruitcake and has an incredibly disappointing championships campaign, but he didn't really slide - he was drafted at 5! Rich slid because he's a poor endurance runner and Robinson was drafted as a 19 year old and lacks class with the footy.

The more time goes on. I think Pick 2 is up in the air. I would think Trengove is it. But I can see us taking someone like Martin. It wouldnt be a surprise to me! I would be happy either way though. I think Trengove might slide like Rich did.

The first thing i noticed when i was watching him live at the championships was that his pace wasn't anything special. Maybe not slow, but no real line breaking ability at all. Ie. not quick.

Will be a good player, but not sure we'll take him at 2.

I tend to agree.. Now Imonly going off of that footage but Martin whilst seeming a likely lad didnt , for mine, do any that exceptional other thata couple of nice passes. His longer bombs smacked of poor choice..there were a couple of Bruce like hospital handpasses. His decision making might struggle at the top level ( reminds me of another midfield demon ).

Pick 2... no where near it.

Funy the other things you cansee sometimes. Butcher was very average. Yes he had attention...but isnt that the game.. he needs to shirk it..play cleverer, seems very one paced.

That Ranga though...he's got something !!

Martin ? didnt displace Trengove for me

I'de take the player with the best skills by foot, this is the area our midfield is lacking. If he has pace & inside ball winning ability even better, the main priority of this draft if we are going to draft midfielders has to be elite kicking ability. If we can even draft two mids with efficient disposal it will allow the coaches to move Davey into a more attacking role as we won't be so reliant on Davey's skills in the back half.

From some of the footage I have seen of Morabito his foot skills don't appear to be that great, obviously the recruiters have the stats and more knowledge to make a judgement. But from the small snippets of footage I have seen Martin, Rohan and Trengove are ahead of Morabito in terms of kicking ability. It will be interesting to see the results of the kicking assessment in the draft camp, hopefully the club can even pick up a kid with good skills with a later pick also.

b59,

His decision making might struggle at the top level

I'm just going to quote jacey, who was paraphrasing the comments made by Tim Harrington on TAC Future Stars last week:

Dustin Martin. Top 5 in best kicks and decision maker. In his opinion, probably the best kick and decision maker. Described as strong and very quick off the mark.

He thinks he's probably the best decision maker in the entire draft. If he's going to struggle at the top level then we may as well give the entire draft away.

I see your point...and I did qualify by saying I based it on what was viewable on the footage...and to be frank that didnt look like much in the way of top - notch decision making. Kicks to contest.. handballs ala Bruce to hospital recipients etc. Turning into traffic to pass as opposed to space.

Yep..ok... hes good

maybe not his best highlight reel then

strangely his disposal efficiency is worse that Scully, Talia,Morabito, Trengove, Stevens, . Will be interested what Predergast thinks ;)

He's not that quick. Probably not suited to us, as we obviously need some more pace in the midfield.

How fast is trengove?

It is probably worth noting that footage shown of him was against WA who were the standout team in the Championships, i do believe he was i the best players in a couple of the other games as well.

As for his efficiency, i was hoping someone who knows a bit more about him at TAC level may be able to shed more light on him as he played for the Bendigo Pioneers who were one of the bottom teams, which may mean he either received plenty of attention, and/or his teammates contributed to his low efficiency. He still seemed to get plenty of the ball though.

Also in terms of his speed, i agree it is not blistering, which is why i compared him to a Dal or Pendles who can still find the ball, space and use it well without seeming slow. I would rather have that type of player than a possible Dale Thomas/Wells type player who seemingly have plenty of speed and x-factor about them as no.2 draft picks, but also seem to not do enough throughout a game.

seems to have a great kick, some of his delivery look first class.

Definately be happy to take Martin or Trengove with pick 2.

All class. Just watched his 8 min clip on youtube again and boy oh boy Richmond are looking good with Dustin Martin, Cothin and Delidio...a real premiership midfield. Very good results in the camp as well so has all the goods you want for a top 3 pick. Good height and body size about him. If we took him at #2 I would be just as happy as if we took Trengove.

It's impossible to form any reasonable assessment of a player in an 8 minute YouTube clip, especially when clips usually show all the highlights.

Wonder how you'd feel about him if I put together an 8 minute reel of all his clangers and stuffups?

I believe we should take Martin with Pick 2.

Cleanest skills in the draft, excellent work ethic and a real on-baller who can follow the footy all day. Testing at draft camp just adds another string to his bow.

Trengrove has a lot of Scotty Thompson go-home factor.

Posted
Not overly quick...probably similar sort of pace to Nate Jones.

I am still on the Trengove bandwagon. He has today's GF to show us his talents yet again and I hope he does well.

Not that I dont think that Martin sounds great - he does as do a few others but I just think that JT has a few more strings to his bow and one being that he has experienced playing with men and has held his own against some tough opposition of late from all reports. While he hasnt been BOG, he has been in the best over the finals series and he has leadership skills as well which are well regarded.

I would say we will take Scully/Trengove and Martin may well go next to Richmond and I wish him well - just not against us!

Trengove has his father living in Victoria and has been reported to say he is quite happy to be coming over the border to where it all happens.( the where it all happens is my addition to the comments but he is happy to come!) He will fit in well to Melbourne and be a star for many years to come.

yer the way he threads the ball through tight spaces is very much like simon black isnt it!! very impressive... will be happy with either trengove or martin at 2 really... we could do with an absolutely sublime ball user in the middle...

Posted

I'd be happy for Melbourne to take Martin at pick no 2 only if from their interviews with Trengove & Morabito they're left with the impression that A: They may be likely to one day want to return home to play or B: They have no desire to play for the red & blue.

If either of those two were the case then I'd say draft Martin at pick 2 in a second!

Ahh the quote queen. I love it when you scroll through threads looking for posts to self aggrandize.

Unless you are serioulsy in another world 99% of people on this forum make their own judgement on footage and experts views about youn players.

We can all sit their and have a got at other people who try to assess young draft propects but it's pointless as i'm sure you know nothing more then I do.

If it makes you happy I am going to watch Trengove play today and I will give some feedback on his work, both positive and in your case negative. ;)

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
