I am one of the few here that hold on to some hope that Newton can make it at AFL level. Here are some comparisons agaisnt similar players. Statistically he stacks up pretty well. Assuming he remains on our list next year (not traded or sacked) it will be a real interest for me to observe how he goes.

Josh Kennedy

Jack Riewoldt

Jay Neagle

Tom Hawkins

Flame away... :D

Knock yourself out undeenianble, but I think we all agree that LJ is in a league of his own in both immediate impact and potential. You could also compare Newton to J Brown and Nick Riewoldt, but no one is saying Newton is in that sort of company.

My intention is to compare Newton with other young, non-superstar forwards who most people think will make OK AFL players.

Hmm, it has been some time since I have posted, but this topic has got me Curious.

I must say I am one of the many doubters of Newton's ability to play AFL Footy, but I think you have got it pretty right with some of those comparisons, especially Hawkins. He is a manchild of epic proportions, but just can't seem to get it right in the AFL. He will have blinders in the VFL, just like Newton, which then gives the selector's faith that he is in form and might impress finally, but continues to fail at the top flight.

I think Newton really showed some good signgs against Richmond (Round 18 not 4), despite only kicking 1 goal and I hoped that he had turned the corner as he really seemed committed to forward defensive pressure, assisting others and also his field kicking seemed improved. Newton didn't play again after the Kangas in Round 19 and it's hard to know if it was form based or "List Management" to make sure the team wouldn't have a chance to win.

I hope for all our sakes he has a ripping pre-season and kills it next year as we definately need a forward and someone somewhere must think he has the ability or we wouldn't have re-signed him for 2 years last year.

One thing that I did notice in those comparisons, was how little games Newton has actually played.... I admit, I am not a fan of his.... But If all he needs is a decent run of games with a decent set of midfielders delivering the ball in, then give the kid a go next season! First half of the year.... Every game!

THose numbers are quite shocking to me.... I cannot believe he has only played 2 more games that Jay Neagle?!?!?! And Juice's numbers are pretty good stacked up against those other guys....

Maybe he is still a diamond in the rough.... We will only know once we sort our gameplan, midfield and forward line out!!

Newton is the only AFL footballer that mispronounces 'Gym.'

A gym? What's a gym?

Some of you got it...

I know you did...

Newton is a player who is completely off my radar right now.

If he is under contract he will stay on.

But I no longer expect anything. If he turns into an AFL viable forward target, then fine. But I dont see it happening and I no longer give his future prospects much thought.

Good luck to him. And thats about it.

You can pull up all the stats you want. Fact is, Newton continues to underperform at AFL level. Compare him to whoever you want, Newton is still Newton, and he has yet to show anything at AFL level to suggest he is going to be a good player.

Of the list provided, I only think Josh Kennedy will turn into a decent AFL player. Despite the statistics, Kennedy looks the part, whereas Newton doesn't.

Riewoldt and Neagle are a long way off, the jury is still out on Hawkins.

People around the club seem to think he has the talent. So i still hold slight hope for him.

He must realize his contract has one more year and unless something changes he will not get another one. So hopefully for him the penny will drop and he will work his bum off from now until the season starts. He just might come back next year ripped, fit and confident and have a break out year. Otherwise he will have to get a real job like the rest of us poor saps.

Kennedy player whose made big improvements for the Eagles.

Hawkins beginning to impose himself on games for the cats

J.Riewoldt has potential but isnt consistent and has terrible supply from his midfield

Neagle is a one-dimensional player, whose an decent kick.

Newton has no big strength, unless things can change otherwise he's gone.

Interesting stats...but you know what they say about stats.

For mine Newton fails to read the play well enough, often enough and even at VFl level is unable to get to enough contests.

Then there's his poor conversions.

I live in hope, since he has a year on contract, but I am not expecting anything.

Very interesting stats, particularly when you consider the vastly superior supply three of those forwards have had from their midfields. I'm very surprised at how well he stacks up against Kennedy. Still, as others have said, the stats don't tell the whole tale. It will be interesting to see if he gets a good run of games next year and what he does with it.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
