Can we ban Jack Watts threads ................... at least until he plays his next game?

Actually this is a Giles thread...I just hi jacked it. I dont care who he works with, but Jack is my preference unless they get a trade for him of course

Plenty of time, IRW.

Sigh..... I just miss the General board with balls, and the blokes who hated me. And exposure to all the stuff that I never believed existed in otherwise sane society.

In case you havent noticed footy is a contact sport.

In case you haven't noticed, JW doesn't get involved in the physical stuff.

In case you haven't noticed, JW doesn't get involved in the physical stuff.

So do we agree or disagree about the possibility of Giles adding something to his game because, as he said," AFL is a collision sport"

Watts isnt Robbie Flower baulking and running down the wing, he's 196cms and 89kgs KPP (in theory)

I don't know if Giles will transform JW to want to 'compete' unless JW wants it as well.

Great skills, we all feel safe with the ball in his hands, but as for being combative, nah.

IRW, this conversation has been done to death, let's agree to disagree and talk about the upcoming draft.

There are only three guys in the Melbourne team that don't need "Rielly" Clarke, Sylvia and Jamar. Send the rest to Rielly please

Are you for real?

This thread talks about a bloke who stresses the important of 2nd and 3rd efforts and of our list you say only 3 players don't need him. 1 of whom is Sylvia! FMD, the blind love some people have for this lazy sod beggars believe. Never have I seen so many excuses made for someone whose biggest failings in his career have been a lack of 2nd and non existent third efforts, plus non-existent gut running.

yeah fair enough, though I only introduced Giles as an option because there seemed to be so much similarity between the Brownlow Medalist and Jumping Jack.

It wasnt a take a crack at Jack thing.

Maybe they could trade Jack for a small forward...:) just labouring the point. Cheers

Thank goodness someone noticed the guts of my post

Small forward you say.....hmmmm (rubs chin)

so much to learn..so little time.

Is Ology ever going to be reborn?

i think 'ology has now become a relic of the past like the reverend, bails, wallet and balmey

don't let yourself succumb irw.....enjoy, enrich 'land

it's more about evolution by natural selection rather than divine design

I imagine you're correct, but I will say it was more RDB than the blokes you mentioned....you could whack someone in those days and tell the umpire to get stuffed.

I got warned on Ology by 'Land for mocking this board....I mean really?

Its like Demetriou and" bringing the game into disrepute" in a players spare time

Anyway all compounded phenomena are impermanent and I dont know footy from a hookah so I guess I'll be happy enough here.

I got a nice letter from Coach Neeld today and apparantly next season is going to be even better

That's more like it....would hate to see you end up in an ossuary - LOL

don't forget 'land has a general board too

wELL i'VE CORRECTED MY r'S d'S AND b'S in my earlier post :) but I have to say that the general G rated board here isnt any fun at all...otherwise Robbie F would be all over it.

The Jazz thread is as much interest to me as the soccer one was on Ology.

Anyway as I said on day one "I come in peace"

I have a lot of time for the opinions of Colin Wisbey from the Collingwood supporters Bulletin Board and this is what he says about Jack Watts:-

Watts is coming along OK ... [A]nd I'm someone who had NicNat as my clear top pick.

Melbourne (probably, with Port, the worst club at developing kids) have butchered Watts. For presumably PR reasons, they threw him to the wolves in his first season. A slim, recently turned just 18yo and still a full-time secondary student and they throw him in at CHF in a big-occasion game (Queen's Birthday) against what turned out to be a top 4 side that year.

Since then they've played him in almost every role on the ground. Makes it a bit hard to find form consistency. And he's still only 21yo (turns 22yp early next season) and still slimish.

IMHO he's still going to become a very good player, albeit that his development would be better at various other clubs.

Looking at Pies' young talls, Reid was 21yo in 2010 and Dawes in 2009. How established were they at that age, let alone Presti and Ant at same age?

I suspect we'll see closer to the real Watts as early as next season. Even this year he played a couple of terrific games (3 Brownlow votes in one against Essendon and 34d and 11 marks in another against Sydney) and another few pass-mark performances.

He makes two interesting points:-

1. We still need to give Watts more time and

2. The MFC's development of its young players has been nothing short of appalling.

I agree with both points and hope that the football department under Neeld/Craig/Misson manage to get things in order from hereon in. I'm hopeful and I certainly wouldn't be bagging our young players at this stage. I want to see how they get through the coming pre season which the FD promises to be the one that drills them up to close to the same levels that the leading clubs reach every pre season and not the far inferior levels comparatively of the fitness, conditioning and skills work we are told have applied for the past decade.

Please...no offence intended.. I'll wind back the sarcasm button..

like Derrrr !!!

With sufficient of the right kind of cattle to put in the right spots expect to see Watts's development kick up a gear in 2013

I distinctly expect to witness a discernably difference type of beast emerge after the next preseason...and goes for more than Watts

I m starting to think we could dispence with the 'obvious' . In the same way the 1 and 2 went away through irrelevance so to ought 'obvious' . ^_^

No offence taken bub but there are plenty who don't appreciate the obvious preferring to blame a 21 year old kid for their frustrations about the team's overall performance.

The OP asks in 2009 in JW was ready for senior footy and furthermore questions whether his decision to stay away from the contests was by his or the clubs design.

Our development of these young guys has been appaling, in many ways we are starting again...again

No disrepesct to Beamer but this bloke wasnt talking about the same thing..

He was very impressive and specifically said it wasnt about punching blokes in the face to toughen them up

You missed my tongue in cheek.

There's some talk about it in the Frawley thread... Maybe the mods can change the title of the Frawley one to have Watts as well

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.

  • POSTGAME: Richmond

After five consecutive defeats, the Demons have now notched up back-to-back victories, comfortably accounting for the Tigers in the traditional ANZAC Eve clash. They surged to a commanding 44-point lead early in the final quarter before easing off the pedal, resting skipper Max Gawn and conceding the last four goals of the game to close out a solid 20-point win.
