First Rising Star nomination for 2009

With the announcement that Ziebell just got the latest Rising Star Nomination, my thoughts shifted to our own young list.

So who is in contention for a nomination this year?

IMO the 2 most likely to get a nomination first are Bennell and Grimes.

What does everybody think?

Not sure how to post a Poll, but I would be interested see everyones thoughts.

On another note, how many nominations could we realistically achieve this year?

Is 4 beyond us?

I think Bennel may be a chance in the next 2 weeks. Grimes will get one for sure.

Other players who might get one will be jetta and i think Watts if he plays will get one. Mainly because he was the number 1 pick and will get a lot more air time than some other players.

Cheney could also end up with one

Jack Grimes

Jack Grimes

My thoughts too. Within the next few weeks.

Been a lot of good kids this year.

Would expect Taylor Walker from Adelaide to get one soon. Bennell and Grimes will have there time in the coming weeks.

Grimes. I'm joining the bandwagon. He looks fantastic.

Grimes. Bennell should get one as well. Watts would if he played, but he'll probably get one next year.

Taylor Walker won't play a better game this year, and he missed the nomination because Ziebell did the same. How unfortunate.

The person or panel that does the nominations seems to have an aversion to picking Melbourne players, but Maric, Bennell and Grimes must soon be in contention, especially if they keep up the "delicious" performances.

They'll give a make-up nomination to Walker later in the year. Probably when Maric, Bennell or Grimes has a blinder.

Maric to get the first one. There is something about his balance that makes me think he is going to be a very good player, and soon.

Bennell will get one soon. Plenty of people are taking notice. I'd say if he plays another game this week like he did on Sunday, he'll win the round 8 nomination.

Grimes will get one too but my bet is Bennell first.

Maric, Bennell and Grimes must soon be in contention

I agree with this, and of course Watts, when he plays, will be paid attention to.

Grimes, possibly stopped by Bennell getting one in the next week or two, but Grimes will definitely get one

Maric to get the first one. There is something about his balance that makes me think he is going to be a very good player, and soon.

Wouldn't surprise me. I agree with his balance and poise when in possession.

22 rounds and 16 teams - I can't see the AFL (or Rising Star voting Panel) nominating 3+ players from the same team.

Bennel and Grimes a chance - And if Watts has a massive impact we will make the 3.

Will leave Cheney, Maric, and Jetta unlucky

Trivia question (I dont have the answer) - "Which team has had the most Rising Star nominations in a single year?"

Where is that stat book.....

Do a search on Rising Star Nominations.......look at least years threads.....I think in one of them lies your answer.

I wouldn't be too sure about that.....

I know he played really well on the weekend for the Crows, but I have seen this kid absolutely dominate matches in the SANFL.... Now before you say "But that was the SANFL", I can assure you that his freakish ability to have a cracker of a game could see him boot 10 goals at some stage this year!

I have seen him kick 7.3 in a prelim final last year and also I have seen him kick a bag of 9.5

An awesome talent along the same lines as Buddy Franklin.... Can be an absolute freak but can also have his lazy days.... Once he puts on a bit more bulk look out!

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
