    I voted for "Big Carl" who used to protect Robbie. Read The Book Flower Bought out in 1988 & he talks a lot about Carl.

    Ditterich and Lockett - I don't think of them as tough. They tended to dish out the pain rather than put themselves in a position to be hurt.

    Flower - Courageous, but not necessarily tough.

    Ablett, Brereton, Carey, Archer and Matthews were all tough primarily because of their physique.

    Tuddenham - Probably the toughest on the list.

    Pound for pound, the toughest player I've seen is Ken Hunter.

    How do you define tough? I certainly dont rank thuggery as being tough.

    I actually thought Lawrie Fowler was tough when he played for MFC

    I remember watching Locket just choking blokes and ragdolling them silly and cheap shotting Caven at the SCG but don't think of him as tough.

    Didn't see Dittch at all besides the glorious 80's videos.

    Albett was a cheap pr! ck too, I remember him running through blokes backs more than anything else.

    Dermie and Arch for mine. Dippa was a tough bugger. I used to play in a yearly charity event for Asthma charity and Dippa joined in each year. Ten pin bowling, 9 holes of golf followed by a knock out tennis tournie. The footy would come out during the tennis and Dippa to this day still smashes the biggest blokes we put up against him, his dislocated a finger one year, he popped it back in and kept going not a worry in the world.

    Unfortunatley these are the ones that will get the votes

    Toughest and most courageous demons i have seen were Ridley , Flower and Barassi

    From other sides Ken Hunter (Carlton) Francis Bourke (Richmond) and Bob Skilton (South Melb) were stand outs

    1) why is Robbie Flower there?

    2) best EVER - ok, it goes back to Carl Ditterich, there's 110 years of footy before that. Oh, and Ron a bit earlier, but he wasn't the toughest of his era. Mr Football was tougher wasn't he?

    That's like celebrating 150 years of football and only including modern footballers in your legends of the club.

    Ask Norm Smith - he'll tell you Captain Blood.

    Ask any 1920 footballer - they'll tell you modern (last 30 years) are all weak.

    So yeah, from that list, its got to be Lethal, the other 'toughs' were mainly snipers and thugs.

    But go and give us a properly researched list.

    Mopsy Fraser , Delicate Des Dickson , Robert Muir , Robert Dipperdemenico , Ian Shelton , Jim Odea , Phil Carman , Peter Crackers Keenan , David Rhys Jones , Mal Brown , Gary Mcintosh (Sth Aust) Don Scott , Ron Andrews , Gary Hocking , Sam Kekovich etc

    Don't get me wrong, I actually know Uncle Dip Dip and he is tough as nails... but i dislocate my finger and pop it back in & keep going a couple of times a year, often at training. Its nothing special.

    Even Tadhg Kenelly used to pop his shoulder back in a couple of times a game, which I rate a bit higher.

    Now playing a grand final out with broken ribs on the other hand...

    His efforts last year playing with a shoulder that would dislocate every 5 minutes was an outstanding demonstration of toughness over an extended period.

    Yeah definitely.

    Hodge's effort wasn't bad either.

    A different sort of tough would be Lonergan (the Cat's one) and Petterd to come back from life threatening injuries

    Alan Jarrott was pretty tough. Remember him pumping fists into Leigh Matthews one day for cheap shotting Peter Giles.

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.

They surged to a commanding 44-point lead early in the final quarter before easing off the pedal, resting skipper Max Gawn and conceding the last four goals of the game to close out a solid 20-point win.
