Forwards in five years.

Recommended Posts

There's not all that much point to this thread, but I was driving home today and I found myself pondering the future of our forward line. If we assume that we will fall in a heap again this season and win less than 5 games, many of you suggest that Butcher is a great choice for pick 1. So just think what we could be looking at in five years or so with Watts, Butcher and Jurrah playing in the same forward fifty. Add in Maric and Jetta and you have to start feeling a little excited.

Apologies to Wonna.

That would suggest we need a tall or two more. There are a variety, Miller (kick), Newton (heart), PJ (will be used elsewhere), Sylvia (body), Bate (same as PJ) that could slot in as another tall on the forward line but that don't excite me as they have faults. None of them would own and monster the position in the way Roughie and Buddy have. And even with that list Jetta and Maric are VERY green, but look like they have what it takes. As for Jurrah, I don't know that we can say for sure that he'll even play a lot of games just yet. Very much a project (though not as much as, say, Weetra).

When you look at our defenders you see a bit more steel. Rivers, Garland, Frawley, Warnock and Martin. There's some age and experience there too. Plus a HOST of guys that suit the small defender role, and rebounding defender/resting midfieder role.

I think as far as our midfielders go, I would probably not be too displeased if the entire group were replaced. Except for McLean, Grimes, maybe Jones, Cheney and Morton and of course Blease and Strauss because they're untried.

So with all that said, if we only get one early pick and not two, I'd go for the mid with the footy brain, quick hands and laser boot, with lightning reflexes. Get Scully in the red and blue, and don't let him go to WC where they'll make him a star.

Crystal ball gazing this. Obviously a stab in the dark here: -......

H-Fwds: Wonaeamirri Watts © Sylvia

Fwds: Garland Butcher Maric

Coach: T.Viney

I know who you stabbed...

IMO Maric looks to be good enough to be an incredibly dynamic midfielder that looks to get forward. Bit like Ablett.

Not saying he will be as good, but that he should look to get into the middle of the park in a few years.

Miller Watts Davey

PJ Bate Wonaeamirri

Too early to tell with Jurrah and Jetta, and way to early to include Butcher or anyone from the 2009 draft.

GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs West Coast

It’s game day and the Demons return to Melbourne to play the Eagles at the MCG for the first time in over a decade. A win keeps the Dees finals hopes alive whereas a loss will almost certainly slam the finals window shut.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
