I agree that Walters could be a slider but a little concerned he thinks we are very keen on him & might pick him at 17 or 19 instead.

Surely we'd want to stock up on midfielders & tall KPP. And if we're going for 'best available' they are not the choices i'd make.

Go through the rest of the draft, we don't pick a single genuine midfielder, the closest we get is Walters who is very short and there are question marks on him being a midfielder at AFL level. So basically we end up with Watts, another KP forward, ruckman, a medium forward & 2 small forwards. I would not be pleased with that.

Would be extre-EE-emely annoyed if the club drafted for needs at 17 and 19, as he suggests. Particularly on a ruckman, when after Niknat and Vickery there are no genuine standouts in that position. Good ruckmen usually fall from the sky, in that they could come from anywhere. I wouldn't [censored] away a good pick on a player who, based on history, is just as likely to make it as a rookie or 5th round selection, when there are clearly superior options available.

Happy we are picking up Watts, but i hope we pick up Swift if he falls to pick 17, i'm also really disspointed burgo has us missing out on him. Bit suprised by our picks especially with us effectively getting 2 small forwards. And the tom lynch pick up sounds a bit iffy, but i hope the recruiters make the right decisions come draft day and that our picks succeed.

Another thing, he has us rating all these players at 17, yet we take Roughead at 19 even though we could've got Redden who we also liked at 17 for pick 35? I know the clubs don't know where players will get drafted after our pick, but if we did that it would've been a really poor choice.

You'd think that we could use the logic that if we let Roughead slip by that one of him or Redden will last to 35 and we can pick another mid or KP forward we were interested in?

I also think that Burgen is using the fact that Lynch trained with us as part of his AIS scholarship too heavily, just because they've got to know him a little better doesn't mean we'll take him.

Yeah fair enough, guess the order is the best thing to look at as opposed to the actual selections. I'll say one thing, based on this draft Barry is one tight lipped SOB, because (hopefully) burgen has got nothing out of him.

I won't dislike the players we take and i think Roughead and Lynch could both be good players, but i might be disappointed for a while at the players we overlooked. If they win brownlows or Colemans, or even BnF and club goalkicking awards, then i'll eat my words.

Agree with everyone's sentiments, I like who has available for us but if we take Lynch & Roughead I'll be underwhelmed.

The club has told us we will be picking the best available and neither of those appear to be justified on that basis. I don't even know why we'd take Lynch on needs, haven't we got enough not-quite-key position forwards?

Michael Walters would be a very handy pick up at 35 though.

Just on that, I think people need to re-address the notion of a 'Tall Forward' or 'Tall Defender'. Being 191 or 192 centimetres does not make you 'tall' in modern AFL football. It makes you medium. Being 195, 196 centimetres is genuinely 'tall'.

I notice that somewhere Burgan considers 186cm to be a 'medium' forward. 186 is small!

I think like many has said here- If swift and Shoenmakers are available GET THEM! Screaming out for good users of the football and those kids do that!

Watts, Swift, Shoenmakers and then whatever after that is fine- Walters would be a great pick up late in the draft also.

Gah! I've just read that our 5th pick in the Burgan draft, Neville Jetta, at 179cm is ALSO considered to be 'Medium'. WHAT? That is runtish at AFL level.

A tough one, no doubt. I suspect that, if injuries don't play a part, Swift will be the better footballer. On that basis, and with Joel Selwood and Judas firmly in mind, I'd rather take Swift. The fact that he could add some genuine class to our midfield is a bonus.

186cm is a medium forward, the smaller side of medium, but still. Medium is more about the way a player plays the game, a non-KP marking player is often called a medium forward. You'd call Mark Williams from Hawthorn a medium forward, despite him only being 180cm.

As for the Key Forward remark, i can't totally agree with that either. Fevola is the best genuine FF in the game and he's only 191cm, Lynch is almost 192cm and could stil grow a little. But to be a Key position player, you have to command the position and to me Lynch just doesn't do that. Maybe he will, but at this stage i haven't seen it and i have doubts about him being a KP player at AFL level. While there is a trend towards taller players, i wouldn't write a KP player off just because he's not as tall as Franklin or Ryder, if he's got other skills then he can still make it.

But in saying all of that i have doubts about Lynch and he's not a high priority for me. But that's the 2nd Phantom that has him going to us, the other being the HS phantom from the other day. (But in saying that other then the obvious ones the HS picks were pretty average).

I rate Neville as a much better player then Leroy. Some people have hopes of Nev going into the middle, he much more versatile then Leroy who is more of a forward pocket, so he could turn out to be a jet of winger for us. If that's the theory behind picking him then it could be a good move

guys, jordan roughead is a sure thing to be a demon. i had him listed as pick 19 in my draft selections and now burgan has backed me up. while i dont want him, i'm resigned to the fact that we have no ruckmen and roughead will be picked up on a needs basis, its a complete waste of a draft pick considering he is just a standard ruckman but what can you do.

Pick 1 - Watts - Very happy

Pick 17 - Lynch - Furious, he is exactly the same as Bate and from what i hear a bit of an ordinary bloke around the club.

Pick 19 - Roughead - hopeless (depends who you ask) but from my perspective a little bit too soft and needs to harden up

Pick 35 - Walters - would be a steal but he wont be around then

Pick 51 - Jetta - Again mixed reports, not as silky as your typical small aboriginal but did get best on ground in the Colts GF in WA

Pick 64 - Dawson - NO Idea

Pick 76 - Hughes - Hopeless but MFC have promised him

all in all this outcome would not be good (in my opinion) i would defintely swap lynch and roughhead for the eagles picks of Swift and shoenmakers!!!

if we got Watts, Swift, Shoenamakers, and Walters with our first four... LOOK OUT!

Did you have any reason other then that you think we'll pick a ruckman then to think we'll take Roughead at 19? If not, you are calling something a "certainty" based on a coincidence of opinion between you and Burgen?

Have a look just how many players Burgen listed as options for us at pick 17. Count them all, there's 12. That's a lot of players, almost twice as many as listed possibles for the 16 picks prior. Translation, Burgen haqs NFI and he's covering all bases by casting a wide net.
