Most people work twice the hours for one-tenth of the pay, and if they achieved what Melbourne did this year they wouldn't have a job.

Its what i always thought. 2008 was completely unnacceptable. Any more of those & we are finished. To all those who think we need to bottom out again, I doubt we could afford that. Sponsors would walk. Who wants to be associated with losers. MFC must be bold

Thats not what i have heard, but i am not going to argue-whatever the answer we cannot afford the luxury of Mediocrity next year, Hawthorn had that luxury because of the success in the 80's & 90's. We must aim higher next year

You make it sound like a choice. It is not. All Clubs will go through a phase of bottoming out at some stage as a natural outcome of the draft and salary cap as their list matures and their stars fade and retire. All Clubs will go through a bottoming out process at some stage. The issue is to manage the process and to prepare and maximise the talent you can take on the list.

Given the state of the list, we might have to endure another tough year as our youth develops. Hawthorn were almost broke a couple of times over the past 10 years. The success you talk about was gathering dust on the shelf not interest in the bank.

I do agree we must aim to do better but we should also be realistic where our list is and where the improvement comes from and how long that will take to develop it.

No Melbourne have been "bottoming Out" & accepting Mediocrity for over 40 years. We cannot afford to do it anymore. If we do we will have the same History as Fitzroy. With the 2 new sides being created, this will give the AFL more leverage to oust any "Basket Cases" in the future.

We are going to have to develop the current list and it will take time. We cant afford not to do it and do it properly. We then have to improve our capabilities off the field to ensure any success we have is real and enduring. The AFL are effectively "managing" Clubs like Kangaroos, Western Bulldogs and MFC. They have all the leverage currently to do it. They are not.

Its just that i don;t want next year to be the same as the last 40+ years. It can't be. Sure the AFL will keep us alive on a drip feed, but at what cost. I don't believe we have the luxury of Tanking for Draft Picks. My Opinion

Chill out & Have a cold beer Mate. Whatever the Situation with GC, i Don't care if i am right or wrong to be honest. I just disagree with "Bottoming out" again next year. We can't afford it.

Firstly, there is no choice of mediocrity or bottoming out, at the end of the day a team is only as good as their list.

Secondly, Hawthorn didn't have that luxury of 'mediocrity' because of the success of the 80's up to '91 - that's nonsense - they're list over time changed. Hawthorn copped the same sort of backlash for their performances when Schwab and Judge was coaching.

Finally, there will be a collective effort next year to improve and play to win. Where we end up will be as only as good as our list allows it to. Now if thats in 13th, 15th or 16th position, so be it. As long as there are signs of a young developing list advancing - having turned the corner - we should all look forward to further improvement.

It may be mediocrity to you, but it might be a vast improvement on '07 at least. If you're wanting finals next year for the Dees- fingers crossed. But don't put your house on it, otherwise you will lose it.

if that means we come 16th with 1 win, well, thats fine with me.

our list is what it is. we all know we arent going to win flags with that list. so we dont have a choice, do we.

remember, the hawks finished 15th or 16th, then finished 13th. thats an improvement right there. it takes time. bailey is weeding out the crap and changing the culture of the club, slowly but surely.

Agree.

There was only 8 games this year that we where within 5 goals at half time. I actually can't remember a side so uncompetetive since Fitzroy.

I think if we botttom out next year (secure priority picks) the future will be kind to the dees... if GC and WS go as planned the competition will be diluted of talent and melbs youngsters will begin to mature and shine while clubs like Sydney and the dogs etc will suffer the most from age and inability to recruit

Dont be so myopic, yes times are [censored] now and every1 like to take a go at the club, but theres definately finals ahead. People forget the tough times hawthorn went through to get to where they are..
