Fixture relief: Looks like we don't have to play Hawks or Cats in Round 1 this year

Cats to get tougher 'blockbuster' draw

GEELONG is likely to be granted its request for a tougher "blockbuster" draw in 2009, with the AFL indicating that it will probably schedule the Cats to play Hawthorn and Collingwood twice, with a grand final re-match in round one being given strong consideration.

Hopefully next year we don't face off against the top 3 clubs in the first 3 rounds. It was not a good start for us this year. Not that it mattered with how terrible we were.

This year we had to watch Geelong unfurl the premiership flag.... and was quietly hoping not to have to repeat the process again with Hawthorn. .... so often we play the Hawks in round 1 !!!!!!

That is disappointing from my point of view, because you want to take on the best and see where you are at. Wanting to avoid them is no good.

I wouldn't be surprised if we're interstate in round 1 next year. Last time was 1998 V'S Fremantle, so we're overdue for an interstate trip in round 1.

I heard a bigfooty rumour that we've got Essendon in round 1 at the G on the Sunday, but I wouldn't take that too seriously.

Cook said it had not played before 50,000 once in a home game in 2008.

be careful what you wish form, you might get blockbuster fatigue syndrome!

True, but I'd also like to look at our fixture and think to myself 'We're a chance of winning sometime before round 6'. If we could maybe get a win before playing some of the top teams, then, with a bit of confidence under their belts, they might do better. For the past 3 years, we've lost in each of rounds 1, 2 and 3. It would be a nice change if we could get a win early on.

Fair point. Although, taking on Geelong or Hawthorn in the first two rounds when we maybe up and running, we might have more of a chance of a win than in Rounds 5 and 6 too when these teams who traditionally build their season up after a slow start. That would be nice too.

Bring on a top side round 1 i say. I want other teams to fear us. Dont Hide Demons

dont worry well end up playing either geelong or hawthorn or bulldogs up in darwin in the nab cup killing our pre season anyway

Just like we were feared after Round One this year?

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.

After five consecutive defeats, the Demons have now notched up back-to-back victories, comfortably accounting for the Tigers in the traditional ANZAC Eve clash. They surged to a commanding 44-point lead early in the final quarter before easing off the pedal, resting skipper Max Gawn and conceding the last four goals of the game to close out a solid 20-point win.
