Players who can go forward or back

Recommended Posts

With Neitz retiring, much has been stated about his ability to be a first class defender and then forward. One of the reasons that he has been such a great player over the years. Brad Miller has been tried down back, but looks far better when leading up from the forward line.

Alas, there is another man who is doing a job at both ends.

Ben Holland.

Despite his apparent weaknesses, this man time and time again comes in does his job when required. However, it wasn't just the goals he was kicking that impressed me. His attack on the ball and his forward line pressure was superb from the man who runs like a robot.

I have no doubt that in a few weeks time, he'll again be asked to do another, vastly different job Anthony Rocca.

This is likely to be his last season at Melbourne, and I just hope that some of the younger players like Newton take the time to see just how hard this guy works.

Absolutely. I don't think there's a bigger fan of Ben Holland than me, and I'll be sad when he retires - despite him not being the most talented player in the side, he does try. And more often than not, he gets the job done. Workman-like, as much as I hate the expression.

Hurt his shoulder yesterday diving on the ball in what was an important play. I was against Holland being on the list this year purely because of his age and where the team is at. But it can't be denied that when given the opportunity to play Holland gives it his all. Well done Benny, hopefully you get the opportunity to back it up next week.

if he had managed to get his head right when kicking for goal he would have been a very successful player over the years. its a pity he struggled with that, because he would have been a dominant player if he had.

Totally agree buddy. Alot of you supporters continually bag this guy, but unlike a few current MFC listed players, who will remain nameless, this bloke always gives 110% for the club. Yes he may have his limitations, but his guts and determination cannot be questioned. Give me a bloke like him over a natural talented player who doesnt apply himself or works hard ANYDAY!!!

I for one am disappointed to hear that he will be retiring at the end of this year. Like Mir Bizzell, I believe it is one year too premature.

there is a reason for this... i left his remote control at home and he was on auto pilot...

seriously the guy couldnt stretch his skin anymore to get another muscle in ...has to impact his ability to walk and run normal lol

he is/was a great team player.. and all the best to him in his playing future..

With Netiz gone could Jeff white play FF next year?

I'd give it a go. Sure he ain't fast, but he would be able to leap freely, plus contact wouldn't bother him as he has been rucking for centuries. He is a nice, long kick. I would seriously consider rotating him from ruck through FF. Why not? It just might work.

In response to a player that can go forward or back, Hurley. He will be a star FF/FB. Depending on how we finish, and if we're able to gain Robbie Warnock's services, i wouldn't be too upset if we finished 14th again.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
