I taped footy flashbacks from last sunday and just watched the last quarter.

This was the first time I watched it since 1987. What caught my eye was Stynes complaining to the goal umpire after Kennedy kicked a goal in the last quarter. The slow speed clearly shows it being a point.

Stynes talks about the 15 metre and accepts total responsibility. I was surprised he did not mention the incorrect call by the goal umpire. I was pretty impressed by that because if it was me I would let the world know.

It was actually Tony Campbell, number 40. He blazed away from 50 when Robbie was alone in the goal square calling for the pass. Incorrect goal called against us.

Not one free paid to us in the 25 minutes of the last quarter that they showed on Footy Flashbacks to about 8 for the Hawks.

One or two blatant ones missed as called by Bobby Skilton and his co-commentator. Newport had his head ripped off and Kennedy stopped and started to put his hands up on the mark for the free kick. It was not paid and while the Melbourne crowd booed the Hawks went down and kicked the goal to put them 3 points down.

Eishold marks the ball in the goalsquare, one metre out and is dragged away by his opponent after taking the mark and the umpire puts him towards the boundary line where he was dragged to. It was a certain goal from where he marked it.

The Stynes 15 metre penalty happened some time after the siren had started blowing but the umpire didn't acknowledge it. If he had, the penalty would not have occurred as everybody would have gone to the goalsquare to stop the kick.

I disliked umpires for the next 10-15 years as a result of this game.

It was my worst day at the football.

Talking of Stynes, when I went outside the 'G at half-time to have a kick, who do you think I saw him a couple of metres to the side, playing with - what I assume was - his child?

True, had anyone of either Eishold, Campbell or Yeats kicked the goals they should have, umpiring decisions that went against Melbourne wouldn't have mattered and Hawthorn wouldn't have won.

Sorry to have mentioned the umpires, but if you read the last line of my post you will understand how I felt at the time and to an extent, even now.

Couldn't agree more. That's where I was standing. That last kick out and passage of play to Buckenara was in sickening slow motion at the time with a horrible feeling of inevitability. I've never got over it. Please talk about anything but. Believe me, you do not want to see this game. I still reckon we would have got smashed by an even greater margin than the following year, if we'd made it. There were massive injuries from that game and the GF was played in a freakish, energy sapping 31oC.

I have seen jimmy a couple of times now at the footy - after the blues game where he looked embarrassed and shattered and then on the weekend with his daughter - that famous irish smile had returned!!!

On radio the other week he spoke both personally and professionally, like the class act that he is!! he had the club that he loves as the priority and nothing else!!

Jimmy will do what is best for this football club, that should not be underestimated when people are saying Jimmy for president.

I have seen a lot of Paul Gardiner in the media recently and he has always handled himself very well. never allowing an interviewer to get him flustered or caught off guard. he has done a lot for this footy club and has overseen significant changes.

if jimmy becomes president, so be it but i have no doubt he is working with the club at the moment in a capacity that ensures the ongoing of the Melbourne Football Club and will make them become a true powerhouse, have an identity and regain the respect of the football world!!

the footy club appears to be on the right track and the losing hurts but long term, well we will go alright i reckon!!

I attended a recent sportsman night where the speakers were Stynes, Voss, Sheedy and Hird.

The last 3 had nothing to say but football anecdotes. Stynes spoke about his life in Ireland, and I was fortunate to be able to ask a question from the floor about his life AFTER football and what motivated him regarding his youth work.

His answer. which took about 5 minutes, received applause across the room.

As we know, Jim is a class act, and the sooner he is seriously involved in the club the better.

Stynesy is a true class act, you only have to read his book from about 10 years ago, but is he qualified business wise to take on the presidency? Is it the best role for him-time will tell i suspect..

I would have thought he was a safer appointment for the ski set than others touted.

After much flurry in the Press, I dont recall many challengers for the role. Its not that sort after.

I admire the work done by Stynes but I would prefer to see him as Board member than as President at this point.

I frame-advanced the camera shot from behind the goals. When I stopped it on the relevant frame the ball was definitely obscured by the post before the next frame showed it going through the goals. It didn't go through the points to the left. (The right hand side for Kennedy.)

Whether it skimmed the post is another issue, but from the footage available in the Flashbacks show you couldn't tell for sure.
