  1. Hoges is contracted until end of season 2017. Would want Neale plus a top 5 pick plus a first rounder the next year - so good is Hoges. Freo is ageing and could be on the decline. Why would he leave a club on the rise if his pay is ok. Plus Freo have to fit McCarthy and Hooker if they go there in the CAP. Cannot see it happening.
  2. We lost so it was crap. The positives were we showed a little heart, we matched North whose hard at it big bodied mids used to scare the crap out of ours - no longer, there are several players to fight there way into the team over the next week - 2 months - Trengove, Petracca (can take in turns with Hoges for the decoy role - only half joking), O Mac, Garlett, Dawes. Pederson is stuck in the revolving door with Frost and look to be joined by Dawes soon. ANB will surely eventually get back in if he keeps his form up.
  3. The article was spot on. But it only takes a couple of 'special' players to change it. Players who demand nothing but 100% + from the group and peers gravitate to them. When Hodge, Lewis and Mitchel retire the Hawks will lose a lot more than talent and its hard to get those sorts of players, especially by trade as you just do no let them go!!! Who are our potential Hodges/Mitchell/Lewis/Selwood etc coming through???? Maybe Hogan, Petracca, Brayshaw, Oliver?????? Of course it also depends on getting and keeping off field top notch.
  4. Hogan has a big tank and some times gets a run in the midfield. He is clearly capable of playing a high half forward role if he is required to. Watts has been used as the quicker leading 3rd tall this season so far. We have some speed in Garlett, Kent, Lumamba and Kennedy is pretty fast. Also coming through the ranks are Hunt and Stretch who are both fairly quick. When we are playing well we move the ball quickly in any case. So I think Lethal probably did not do his home work before making those comments.
  5. I guess he will be told not to put any weight on his knee until the scan results are in and they know the extent of the injury. It may not be as bad as we may think.
  6. If we can keep the contested ball win rate up then Watts should be very dangerous up forward as a tall leading mobile forward. Cheers,M
  7. Roos will get a great chance to look at the players in action without the distraction of coaching. Giving Goodey the job during the NAB should prove great for the team, Roos and Goodey. Cheers,M
  8. T Mc was pretty good without starring in the praccy. He did get caught a few times but that was the congested nature of the game - you had to be lightening quick to get a break. O Mc looks like he will develop ok - he needs about 5 kg. If he can eventually take a KPB it will free T Mc for an attacking sweeping back role, a wing or even 3rd mobile tall up forward. The story goes that Hogan was showed footage of the KPF prospects before the draft and his preferred was the Weed - whether that is a myth??
  9. Really great summaries so I cannot add much. The game was very, very congested with lots of stoppages and contested ball. It was hard work in close and not a lot of time or space for 'pretty' skills. I guess that is the way Roos/Goodwin are wanting the team to play. Recruiting over the last couple of years suggests that also. Just as an aside the AFL Prospectus said that sheer numbers of possessions at junior levels mean little - its contested disposals that count. They cited Toumpass, Lucas and Morton as examples of players with high possessions but low contested possession count. Lesson learnt - pick up players like Viney, Brayshaw, Petracca and Oliver with early picks - so its been learnt. No one could have stopped the goals Hogan kicked. Harmes and Oliver looked good. Salem showed class and great disposal under pressure. O Mc looks like he will be good down the track. Weed also given time should be good. For perspective at this stage of Weeds career Hogan had already won a Casey B & F and goal kicking - so nocomparisons - take it easy on the Weed. He did take a pressure mark in the last Q and looks like he will be ok - just needs time.. If we can have some really good delivery forward Watts will provide plenty of headaches for the opposition as our 3rd tall. Plenty of hope in the offering. Wait and see how we go with the NAB Cup. We are definitely building a midfield that should take us places. Now lets get Hogan signed.
  10. Plus Oliver is supposed to have way more break away pace than Parish. Parish should be good but I think Oliver will be better.
  11. According to the AFL Prospectus Champion data players at TAC who do not win enough of there own ball tend not to make it at AFL despite their Junior Comp disposal numbers. They said Toumpas and Morton were relatively low 'win own ball' juniors despite high numbers. Our recruiters at the time were obviously not aware of this. Since those days its no coincidence that its largely been ball winners. Oliver is a ball winning beast. Evidently Parish can win his own ball as well. By reports Oliver has more pace than Parish and also more size.
  12. The principles behind WADA apply to us all. If you use a tax agent to do your tax and they make errors whether intentionally or not you are liable for penalties no matter the trust you had in the tax agent etc. Its up to you to make sure what goes into your tax return (body) is legal. The only issue is that for us penalties are usually not backdated and the Taxman is far more ruthless than WADA.
  13. When we obtained pick 3 we had full knowledge of all players available. We did not just hear about Oliver's great run in the last half of the season. The Bulldogs picked up McREA and Bont on the back of mid season onwards improvement. This is the time leaks start to appear. We will probably hear a little more tomorrow. The Dons will take whoever we pass on out of Oliver and Parish and likely take Francis as well. They desperately need mids and Francis is likely a play anywhere type. Still we cannot rule out Parish just yet.
  14. Maybe something has leaked. We know that the Dees at the moment prefer the big bodied types. We have a few already but none with explosive breakaway pace.
  15. After trading in 3 mids who we think can develop and trade out of a 2016 mids draft and then trade up even higher in this talls draft why would we bother unless we wanted talls. Plus we have mids in Trengove and Petracca back. We will be up to our ears in mids and when we become that destination club we will even have them coming cap in hand to play for us.
  16. Prior to trade week Roos/Goody will tell the List management/recruiters what they need and it was obvious as we picked up mid types. The recruiters take this into account going into the draft and will follow this guide only if there is not much between the sought after type and the best available. Talls are usually taken first if there is not much difference in ranking - they also tend to better hold their trade in value later if needed. Reaching to far into the draft for a particular type is very risky and likely to come back and bite on the bottom.
  17. Callum Twomey has Parish ranked at 3 so its likely he will be taken by us - he is a high probability choice. For a KPP we have to hope Curnow or Weideman slip through. He has Milera ranked at the live 7 pick - ours but thinks Dons or GC may take him - if not Adelaide.
  18. Taylor said its best available unless the next is a tall and there is not a lot of difference. A mid can get 30 disposals week in week out in the TAC and not be rated that much higher than the tall who leads well, is relatively quick, crashes and bashes and kicks goals on a regular basis with relatively way fewer disposals. So the way recruiters rate talls and mids is different. There is usually more risk with the talls but if it comes up you are laughing big time. Watch for Callum Toomey's final draft update closer to draft night. He usually gets the first 10 reasonably ok. I guess he gears a bit of talk as we get closer. He said on trade radio (I heard him) that if it was not for injury he would have had Weidemen at pick 2. So Taylor and team have a lot of thinking to do. Play it safe and go for Parish or be bold and take a risk on Weideman knowing that if it comes off it could set the team up for the future. Also knowing that we may attract a top established mid next year. I think as draft day approaches the Phantom drafters and media will start going for either Curnow or Weideman at 3.
  19. The sleep at night factor may come into play. KPF's are hard to get. Saints overlooked a gun mid to get one last year. We have heaps of improvement that will come naturally from our existing mids plus Trengove and Petracca to come plus our trades. If Hoges gets injured we will be in strife or if he gets a massive offer from another club when his contract is up. I get the feelng that coaches sleep better when they have a couple of gun/good tall KPF's. If we pick up next year with more wins then we can attract a gun established mid anyway. A mid picked up now is likely to take 2 or more years to come really good anyway. I think if we rate Weideman or Curnow as say 4,5 or maybe even 6 we may very well reach to get the one we want using the same logic as the Saints - they are so hard to get. Taylor did say if there is not a lot in it go the Tall.
  20. From news.com. Interview with Hogan " Indeed, he said he’d been busy studying draft prospects — including potential forwards — to help the team mount an assault on September. “We’ve only got a young team and could do with a little more help up forward,” Hogan said. “These days the academies are amazing, you get developed from such a young age, come into AFL footy and you can basically slide straight into the system. “There’s not that three to four years that talls used to have, you can come straight in and have an impact.” Something which Hogan knows all too well, having kicked 44 goals in his breakout season this year." Seems he does not want to 'waste' an early pick on a mid this draft.
  21. If we look to get Prestia we will have to use 2017's 1st rounder+. GC have our 2016's already. Could be worth it. I now think we will pick up Parish for his quality outside work plus good o the inside. I think the probability of him making it is high and we could not take another bust. He is a natural footballer. I think there will be a quality tall forward available at 7.
  22. I doubt we will take two talls. One will do. Saints ignored claims that Petracca could be a once in a generation player last year. So talls are preferred when available now. They are so darn hard to get and costly if you have to poach one.
  23. If players are fairly evenly rated it will come down to supply and demand. That is why the saints went McCArtin last draft even though most rated Petracca at 1. ITs a no brainer that bigs are way harder to get than mids. Next years draft is supposed to be a mids draft, there are always mids coming out of contract or FA. Consensus opinion is Parish but if they take him at 3 i would think it's because they see one of the talls will be there at 7 as Salem was at 9. I just hope they pick up players who turn out guns regardless. Agree with MAnDee's sentiments in his post.t
  24. Buckenara rated Collins as the 3rd best player in the draft. Given our KPD stocks with O Mac coming through I would be surprised if we pick him up.
