MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - ROUND 21
Deecisive replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Regardless whether Reiwoldt is in or out we are facing a team fighting to stay in the finals race, a win against us is a must. they still have some decent tall marking forwards and these type of players always give us grief. We need to come to play. -
Agree we have been down before at half time and come back and won games, the team today did not have that belief and played like it
-
problem is we run extra men around the ball and then find ourselves out numbered every time we go forward. How many times do we see our players bomb it down into a forward line where our sole forward has two or more opponents who just hold him out of the contest. Opposition teams are creating their attacks from turn overs in our forward line.

MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - ROUND 20
Deecisive replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
This is the game that will show us if we have progressed significantly from last year, the team is down after last weeks loss. Now they need to all step up and win against a higher class opponent than we lost to last week, if we want to make the finals this year. -
Jones, Vince, Maynard and Weideman all in. we need to bring in players that are playing well to encourage them to play well. We need to drop players that are not playing well and stop always hoping that they will bounce back. So my outs would be Trengrove, Hogan, Hannan, last out possibly JHK, I would have Jack Watts as a possible drop as well, he needs to pick up his form, he has had some pretty ordinary games lately maybe a spell at casey will remind him and everyone else that everyone needs to play for their spot every week.

Sorry i dont buy these poor umpiring decisions, we should have kicked with the wind in the first quarter, goodie chose the wrong side, goodie didnt make the right moves, past history shows we have not beaten north in over 3,998 days or whatever. End of the day we had one of our best teams on the field, we were close to top four playing a team ranked 17th. They came to play we did not. We had too many passengers, too many half hearted runs, tackles, poor hand passes instead of kicking, poor decisions to play on when they should have gone back and had a shot, etc.. we had more than enough opportunities but failed as we so often have done when we go into a game as a favorite against a bottom side. We have a sad history of loosing the games we should win and winning some that we should not. It would appear that some players go into some games paying too little respect to the opposition.
-
I think you will find that Nev was just trying to cover for Frost who went to put pressure on another north player up ahead, that is the zone defense approach. I thought nev was probably our second best player after Oliver, neither of which stopped trying all day long, which is far more than can be said for many.

Gutted, what a pathetic effort from so many players. When the pressure was on they went missing. no thought, no skill, not tackling, no finals by the looks of things. As for Jessie, i am not sure he is such a loss, his contribution this year has been woeful, yes he has had injuries, many question his second efforts, i find many of his first efforts poor to start with. TMac is far better forward at this stage.
-
Need to give him a chance to mature. we have far too often criticized players as not being up to it, to find ourselves being proven wrong. A couple of years ago Max was not highly regarded, Jetta couldnt cut it as a forward, Frost, both Mac's, ANB, Melksham, etc... he is young and needs some games.

MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 18
Deecisive replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
So if Jeffy is not available due to family issues, who is the most likely inclusion to replace him, none of our emergencies look capable of taking on that small crumbing forward role. -
if we see ourselves as a finals side then we should be able to play anywhere. given we have played here more than anyone it should be a home game advantage to us. and a million dollars is pretty important to the club. Again I dislike the excuses that we re playing away from Melbourne, we have our best 5 players out, the umpires looked after the crows, jessie should have gotten x number of frees, etc.. The side that went out there to represent the melbourne football club just did not play decent football, they were slow, did not chase, allowed adelaide players to dance around them. We constantly bombed away to 3 on 1 contests in our forward line, passed to men in trouble and kicked into the man on the mark or had our kicks smothered, we missed easy shots and fumbled the ball all night long. Hogan is a lazy player, he does not chase and he does not seem to care what happens to the ball after he has contested for a mark he lost. Maybe he needs a turn running around in the VFL as a backman to see if he can learn to be more accountable for his player.
-
sorry i dont like this excuse that 4 or 5 of our best players are out. we have replacements and the rest of the team is still there. We have been playing woeful football regardless of who is in or out. This running off the back of the square is not working tonight, forget it. Man up so that if we kick it forward we arent kicking it to a 3 on 1 situation. or when we kick it out of our back line we kick it into a wall of crows. and when the crows get the ball we have a player on them. too many players gone missing, too easy for the adelaide players to take it end to end without a melbourne player touching it. hard to win from here, but they need to at least try a lot harder than what they have been so far.
-
what a pitiful effort, really disappointed that kent cannot kick straight. and our tackling is horrible. Need to lift all over the ground. not out of it yet, but we need to work damn hard to win this.
-
I think stretch is a definite out, he has tried but not delivered enough to keep Tyson out. Pederson, while he did a couple of good things he needs to make room for Jack Watts if he is available. I am sure that Watts would have done enough had he been fit to equal of better Pederson's effort today.
-
lets not get carried away we are in the top for for maybe an hour and a half, before port push us out. we did well today despite a lot of players out, shows we have better depth than in past years. We had a few players who played poorly and we had some poor umpiring decisions. we need to play better for our remaining games to make sure we can give ourselves a top 4 spot coming into finals, we need to try to avoid as many interstate finals as possible if we are going to have a chance of getting into the grand final.
-
we got the 4 points in the end. in past years we would have let carlton run over us. The team is going in the right direction, building better cohesion, teamwork. Still need to work on our disposals, tackling and decision making. All in all a good win especially with Max still is a shadow of his pre-injury form, Hogan and smith first game back from injury or illness. Next week is going to be a real test, i hope we will win, but realistically it will be difficult given the players we have out, but the team has shown it can do the unexpected. go dees.
-
we have had many instances of players hitting players behind play, in play, in melees etc over the years. buggs penalty seems excessive given the norm. I agree with others that this is a political thing to prove the afl is tough on violence at least for one match this week. Still remember tingay getting his jaw broken and the eagle player did not get any sort of penalty. Oliver gets hit in the face nothing for his attacker, even though it ticked many of the same boxes as buggs.
-
i agree with the idea of a send off rule, i remember our last grand final when an essendon player layed out one of our key players that day, cannot remember if it was a legal bump or a hit, but it did leave us with one good player short. in a grandfinal some players may be happy to take a shot at a couple of the best opposition player as winning the grandfinal is probably a lot more important than being suspended for the first couple of matches for the following year. Having said that a send off rule would have seriously shortened big carls last game for us, which was very amusing to watch.

sounds like the ex swan player henwood will be a member of this weeks tribunal. Really with so many footballers they couldnt choose panel members that have no past history with either club involved in a case.
-
the media is playing this up to the hilt, he plays for melbourne so he will get the maximum and then some, and the AFL will issue a statement to say they are going to penalise anyone that does this harshly (unless they play for collingwood, Westcoast, Sydney, Hawthorne, Geelong or Richmond, and a couple of other teams that aren't melbourne). This will be a repeat of the sling tackle our player will serve as a lesson to others. All in all it was a dumb act, that fired up the swans. and even when the umpire reversed the free we didnt have the basic skill to make the most of it. dumb all round.
-
well tonight was a downer. Yes the 4 games in 18 days did have an impact on us. But we lost this through lack of effort, the whole team was flat, we did not tackle, we did not chase. Putting both wagner and white down in the backline threw it out of wack, both did very little for the team. Hunt and Harmes both quite. Bugg may as well went off after that hit on the swans player as he contributed bugger all. We failed to man up so the swans just chipped it around us all night long. Guys need to have a good long break and bring in some fresh players, wager, white, bugg, Harmes and possible ANB could all have a rest and practice their skills with Casey.
-
We are not out of this yet. but we need to lift, a lot of players are doing stuff all so if they lift we can pull this back. so many of our passes were rubbish, dropped marks, poor handpasses, failed tackles.. We need to reverse all of these, team needs to get fired up and go out there and kick the swans butt.

Injuries are part of every team, we are fortunate enough that it provides us with an opportunity to rewards players who have been putting in, in the VFL. We have had quite a few good players out and others have stepped up and shown they too have a future with the dees. We will have a few outs this week but I think we have some excellent backups that we do just as well.
