Snicko Tech for Goals
Like the runner, the rule changes, the sign board and AFLX etc... when is the AFL going to learn to trial these concepts for a season or more at VFL , SANFL etc level and then bring them in when the public are on board. Nothing against any one change but we seem to be having them now for changes sake without much forethought. And why not try different things in different leagues. For example VFL could have the 6,6,6 while SANFL could trial reduced interchange etc.

R.I.P Ian Thorogood
As I understand it the youngest player in our 1964 premiership side was Ken Emeslle who at the time was 20. He'll be 75 this year but like Ian and all those other players from that marvellous Demon era they share a special bond.

Big Improvers/Standout New Players
Perhaps the biggest upside player is kolodjahsnij. I have no idea what to expect. He had a good one or two years at the Suns but recent form is plagued by injury. Could he do a Brayshaw and shine...hope so. Time for Petracca to show his skills. Of the others Hunt probably has a fair upside but I'm not holding my breath. On the question of upside I think we saw a big improvement last year in the coaching staff. I think they need to take themselves to that next level as well, especially in the overall area of building a culture of success and respect. That second aspect is vital as we saw with the Australian men's cricket team.

Farewell Jesse Hogan
When I read this excellent article in the Guardian today it made me think of this post. The article is a in depth interview of one of the members of the women's rowing team, Annie Vernon who while expected to take the gold medal at the Beijing Olympics "only"took the silver. She has written a book entitled; Mind Games: Determination, Doubt and Lucky Socks – An Insider’s Guide to the Psychology of Elite Athletes The Guardian article is well worth a read but these couple of paragraphs stood out for me: "Matthew Pinsent, who won rowing gold at four successive Olympic Games, told Vernon that, rather being an unflappable serial winner, he used to wish the van driving him to every major race would crash so he could escape competing. " Vernon has interviewed more than 60 elite athletes, coaches and psychologists from diverse sports to discover how the mind shapes success and failure – while arguing that mental toughness and composure are developed rather than being innate gifts. “The public understand skill development and physical training,” she says. “But they believe elite athletes are born without nerves and with massive confidence. It’s not true. The idea that rugby players are born to run out in front of 80,000 people at Twickenham? Of course they’re not. They learn how to do that. My interviewees all said: ‘You’re absolutely spot on. There’s this misconception that mental skills are there at birth. But they have to be made.’” https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2019/mar/18/annie-vernon-olympic-gb-rowing-silver-interview-donald-mcrae

you can sideload the app onto the PS4 and the xbox as I understand it

Foxtel Sports aka Kayo
Lots of people on Whirlpool complaining about buffering when trying to watch the Sky feed of the Australian GP on Kayo. I suspect that this was Kayo's first big event so it will be interesting to see what happens with the AFL. I assume that because they take the Channel 7 AFL feed when available that many subscribers will watch FTA direct so the number of subscribers taking the Kayo feed will be reduced. For those who are interested Kayo have a voucher offering two months for $5. Here's a link to a voucher code site. Not sure if the code works but good luck. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/kayosports.com.au

Impact of rule changes
after seeing the JLT I would be interested in views. Seems to me that the rules have caused confusion in the short term and that game plans honed over many seasons are out the window. The kick out rules seem to be a waste of time (the zone has just pushed back) but perhaps it is too early. The hands in the back relaxation could impact the likes of Ben Brown at North. On reflection a full year at VFL level for these rules may have been better but the AFL knows best !!

Media Predictions 2019
Lot of love for Collingwood. While I think they are better than Essendon one has to ask if Pendlebury will have an elite year...can Sidebottom have a finals series like he did and is Cox the real deal. They have an almost no name backline besides Howe and their draw is harder this year. At the end of the home and away I have them around 6-7. Would not surprise me if the Bulldogs aren't around the 7-10 spot. North being there would surprise me.Brown cannot keep getting the free kicks he was getting last year for a start.

New Quarter Time Challenge
That video reminds me of the iron man challenges back on the Commerce department lawns at Melbourne Uni many years ago. You wouldn't want to try it after a few beers and hot dogs. I like the frisbee idea... other than someone being hit on the head (and you'd have to be unlucky for it to be going at speed) it sounds safe. Could be impractical in an big outdoor arena like the MCG but worth thinking about similar activities. Certainly more fun than the chook raffle or similar that's run now.

Target 70,000
IIRC they were around 55k last year... they may be like the mechanical hare at the dishlickers... tauntingly out of reach

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JAY LOCKHART
good assessment.... a capable but not outstanding player. Good depth addition but it underlines that there is really not much in the cupboard at Casey in the depth area. This season's success will in the end come down to injuries and dare I say it suspensions. Good luck Jay

New Major Sponsor - Jaguar CONFIRMED
An omen?? https://www.theguardian.com/business/2019/mar/13/jaguar-land-rover-recalls-cars-over-carbon-dioxide-levels Jaguar Land Rover has been forced to recall more than 44,000 cars for repairs after UK regulators found some models were emitting more carbon dioxide than previously thought.

Bulldogs "Thor" Guernsey
Hang onto your hats people !!! "Club captain Easton Wood displayed the jumper for the first time at the Bulldogs' season launch on Tuesday night and the reaction on social media to the decision was swift and mostly negative. However Iconoclastic's Ben Parsons, the founder of Ministry of Sport and a leading sports marketer, said such innovation was necessary otherwise sporting codes would lose relevance. He also had a message for sports fans trying to make sense of the decision. "You ain't seen nothing yet," Parsons said. "I think they should be applauded for trying to do something different rather than rolling out the same mundane stuff." https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/innovate-or-die-say-sports-marketers-as-bulldogs-jumper-sparks-debate-20190313-p513yu.html

Bulldogs "Thor" Guernsey
Okay I suppose its for the younger members of the audience but it's getting very close to cringeworthy. Almost Meat Loafesque one could say. Could it be coming from the same marketing area that gave us the AFLX? If so I think they need a little guidance from elsewhere. Stadium entertainment is hard but if you are smart it can be done. I hear the pre game act at the new Perth stadium is a good as it involves the stadium itself coming to life.

Steven May Suspended for 1 Match
shoulder to chest and then a clash of heads...not exactly the same. Perhaps he should have gone but it was different

Steven May Suspended for 1 Match
congrats for trying binman...some on here just don't get the modern game and the all out effort to protect the head. I hope we haven't got a perennial offender in May. With lists so finely balanced we cannot afford suspensions. This or at the latest next has to be our year.
