  1. Though we could then be referred to as the Colonel Blimps
  2. Agree DS Despite the seeming joy on this thread it's not the best news. It's early but it would be nice to see that injury list dwindle to almost nothing a la the Tigers in 2017.
  3. Tend to agree but with the first VFL outing being scheduled for after the completion of Round 3 by the AFL team I still see them as important for the 15-25 ranked players. Preuss, KK, Hunt, to name but a few. It's interesting but there seems to be little appetite among the clubs to bring back meaningful pre- season practice games. On the AFLX I get the original concept etc but this circus has really lost me. I suppose it's for the kids because I can't think of anyone else.
  4. hear you poita... I was surprised but the official capacity mentioned in Wikipedia is 12,000 !! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casey_Fields
  5. Agree... perhaps 58er is talking seats.... only 320 or thereabouts at Casey. The capacity is around 10k which should make for a bonanza day for the egg and bacon roll sellers !!
  6. yep there's a lot of discussion about the needed speed on the whirlpool site. People say why is it not like Netflix. According to the experts it is the refresh rate of sport that requires more bandwidth. 7mbs is right on the margin if I recall and 13mbs should get very good definition.. I think Looking forward to trying the service when my internet goes beyond its present 3 or 4mbs with lots of drop outs...grrrrrrrrr
  7. yep it resonated with me a la that man in the White House... great post Wrecker PS... if the above made me sound like a fan of Donald... I am ceratinly not !!
  8. Just another update... apparently kayo released a tweet in the last couple of days saying they were still working on the Android TV app.... (said they want to get it perfect... which makes sense.) Most comments on the Whirlpool site are favourable. There are sound synchronisation issues with some devices seems to be the most prevalent complaint. Still looking very good as an investment for the upcoming season. Cheers from Bangladesh !
  9. It will happen but one has to remember I suppose that the ruckman still only gets the benefit of prior opportunity. He can still be penalised for holding the ball. Fascinating
  10. Perhaps another way of looking at this is trying to predict which of these rules will be eliminated first. The Ruckman taking the ball out of the ruck will lead to multiple secondary bounces and will encourage taller players who can just seize the ball to the detriment of true ruck work. Could never understand why this was brought back in. In the short term I hope it benefits MFC as by (hopefully) having the dominant ruckman we will be introducing uncertainty into the minds of the opposition... particularly those teams who rove to Gawn's tap outs. The flip side is will it see Oliver still being used in that roving position with his miracle bullet like handpasses. I must confess that like most supporters I am very confused by these changes.
  11. One has to think on the tactics. If teams are going to park the bus perhaps we should try the same.Having watched knock out games for many years it always seems to me that there is parking of the bus by both sides on many occasions until the first goal and then it's game on. Our style has become way too predictable and without the stars who can cut through a defence not to mention score a goal or two it just seems that we will more often than not be playing football lotto. The next world cup qualification is certainly not going to be easy. In Dhaka at the moment. A city of leafy boulevards it is not but I am off to explore Old Dhaka today.
  12. The Palestinian game was probably the best from a technical aspect. The Syrian game for a change involved relatively all out attack against the socceroos which is something we rarely see. Good win but the performance did not inspire great confidence in the team's ability against the likes of Korea and Japan. Hopefully they surprise me. Mabil could be the future. McLaren does not impress. Ikonomidis may have the goods. Kruse seems on his last legs.
  13. it would require a vpn .. but why not go with Kayo. Assuming a seven month season at $25 a month that is $175 and you get all the rest of the sport as well
  14. Japan beat Uzbekistan overnight so we have avoided Japan in the group of 16 and now face Uzbekistan. That loss to Jordan cost us as had we won we would have had a far easier match against Vietnam. Almost no coverage of the non Australian matches in the Oz media so far. Doubt that it will change. Went online and the ticket prices for the first round of matches at least were very reasonable...about A$25 if I recall. Off to Bangladesh late next week so I may miss the pointy end of the tournament but I may get lucky with the hotel TV coverage. From what I hear sports bars in Dhaka are few if any !!
  15. Must say that when you have regard to the various "no access" memberships offered by all the clubs the membership figures are all a bit flaky. Time for some transparency perhaps. I'm sure any sponsor worth their salt has access to the detailed membership breakdown.
  16. Take care....those places don't exactly sound like the Greek Isles
  17. what a wonderful piece of info Gaawn....thanks... I'm sure that will be of interest to many. Here's the link if any want to look at it on the MFC membership site. (You even get one free admission). https://membership.melbournefc.com.au/packages/view/970/international-member
  18. thanks ... have heard of maotai but have never tried it. Spending a lot of time in Asia myself I am aware of the paint stripper taste that you describe. It is also used to describe the taste of durian which is also an acquired taste. The taste you describe is often associated with raw alcohol. Never thought of it as an expensive taste so it's very useful to know. Mind you I have a bottle of campari that I can never seem to finish either. cheers
  19. completely off topic but perhaps relevant to our followers in China.. After years of trying to work out who Hisense were I think the arena for the Australian Open Tennis has been renamed 1573 Arena. A google search showed up a brand of Chinese Liquor. Any of our China residents care to comment. Cheers PS.. found this on the net: "Australian Open officials announced in Shanghai last night one of the biggest sponsorship deals in its history with an aspirational Chinese distillery that dates back to The Ming Dynasty. "
  20. Careful... Gil will have us playing games in Splitz if he thinks he can make a bob or two?
  21. The ruckman will be immediately claimed...that's why they bought in the rule all those years ago
  22. Hi Matt this article may be helpful to you. It suggests you need a minimum steady speed of just under 8mbs to enjoy Kayo in HD. https://www.finder.com.au/kayo-data-usage Interestingly enough I was reading elsewhere that if we ever see 4k streaming it will require a speed of 20mbs. I also saw a comment saying that a 4k television camera costs around A$1M so I doubt we will be seeing much 4k content. And of course they are just about to release 8k televisions. Boy this area has come a long way fast. Here's the article about why we don't see much 4k streaming. The comments are very instructive. https://www.residentialsystems.com/blogs/2018-finally-be-year-4k-broadcast-tv-content
  23. yep...have finished below 8 only 12 odd times in the last 50 years... what a run MFC on the other hand 28 times out of the last 50 odd years
  24. from the literature it seems to be a recovery period of 4-6 months as you say but that I think is the time to get to reasonable fitness. In the case of an athlete one would need to add in the strength training etc that cannot commence until it is healed. Eight months would put it mid finals so he could be a possibility as you suggest. Would they risk it?? Another stat that I saw was that while 91.5% of athletes recover to the extent that they can participate in sport again only 71.5% get back to the level they were.it was a study of around 1500 athletes IIRC.
