Kayo is 4K in 2024
Saudi Arabia is now confirmed as paying out the Foxtel/Telstra debt in return for a stake in Dazn. (For those interested Foxtel was effectively sold for nothing with foxtel and Telstra getting loans repaid. Not sure if they got interest if any on the loans prepaid). Similarly FIRB approval is imminent. Going forward an interesting comment from Dazn which could come true with Saudi money... DAZN has been known for buying up local rights deals in different markets across its near-decade long existence. However, during a panel discussion in Melbourne on Thursday, co-founder James Rushton signalled a change in strategy, noting the company’s desire now to control rights deals on a global basis. “One of the things that DAZN is looking to do as a business is to try and buy rights globally. We much prefer to own all rights in all markets,” Rushton said. https://www.theage.com.au/business/companies/foxtel-s-petrodollar-fuelled-sale-close-to-the-finish-line-20250312-p5lj02.html

Dodgy cats?
It does have one in the sense that you're not allowed to spend more than you earn. This is what has got Manchester City in trouble. In simple terms the League is saying that the sponsorship fee paid by the Middle East owners is greater than what would be paid by an arms length sponsor. (Of course the more powerful/popular the club the higher the justifiable sponsor fee. You could even argue a higher fee on the basis that the recipient club will use it to buy "name players" that will enhance your sponsorship. Clear as mud but perhaps clearer than F1 team spending caps.)

Dodgy cats?
This is how strange the salary cap rules on sponsorships etc. can be. No wonder they're almost unenforceable From an article in today's Age on Petracca's change of management. He appears on YoPRO packaging in his Melbourne jumper and kicking a Sherrin football, so those payments must be lodged under additional services agreements (ASAs), which enable players to earn extra income beyond their base salary for promotional and marketing activities. Each club has a cap on the total amount it can spend on these agreements. However, Petracca also appears in a YoPRO Instagram video in normal clothes without any AFL “intellectual property”, such as a jumper or logo. In that case, the 29-year-old can accept money outside ASAs. https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/petracca-s-power-move-demon-splits-from-star-studded-connors-sports-stable-20250310-p5lieu.html Begs the question if Trac did his cooking show in an MFC polo would the revenue come within the salary cap. Where do you draw the line between genuinely leveraging your image as a footballer vs routing the salary cap. For those who are interested in these things the present investigation of Manchester City is a fascinating study.

Christian Petracca
Some background. The Age article contains a decent bit of background analysis She has worked with Team Petracca since August last year, supporting the Melbourne star’s wife, Bella Beischer, in securing some of his non-football commercial deals, particularly with his ever-growing cooking empire On Trac 5. They had worked together with D’Orazio and Connors Sports on some deals, but the switch to Scullie will streamline Petracca’s affairs. https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/petracca-s-power-move-demon-splits-from-star-studded-connors-sports-stable-20250310-p5lieu.html There's a whole new revenue source in the social media sphere. My feeling is that the mainstream managers don't really exploit it. Could even be a role for Tracc post football. Good luck to him

PREGAME: Rd 01 vs GWS
Will be a pleasant surprise if we come away with a win. Personally I'm more concerned as to how we build into the first six week block. From a season viewpoint we need to come out 4-2 and at least 3-3. It's such an overly long season that pre-bye form is not that indicative. My greatest concern is that our bottom 4 and the next 4 at Casey need to push through. Next is the smalls to mediums in our back 6. Anyway let's see what 2025 has to offer. Lifting that cup would be lovely. PS: Hope Jefferson makes it

Big statement but not too far from the truth. Youtube is a great resource. Some travel vloggers leave FTA for dead.

NON-MFC: Opening Round 2025
Wait until the next round where Thursday or Friday night will go to another streamer. It's almost inevitable. In USA the NFL is already spread across three streamers or thereabouts

NON-MFC: Opening Round 2025
They have separate graphics teams apparently as there's a lot of feedback on graphics covering scoreboards etc. You wonder how the two networks deal with the ad break or lack thereof. Didn't notice whether Fox were still waiting for the notional ad break to complete before replaying/commenting on the goal. Will be interesting to watch as the season develops PS Thanks for the reference to NEP. Hadn't realised they were so ubiquitous. Made me wonder if by being so they are holding back the innovation that you might see if there were more players in the industry

Out of curiosity I know we now have two commentaries (Fox and Ch 7) and that Fox/Kayo is in 4k but do we have two camera or production teams Thanks

NON-MFC: Opening Round 2025
Agree the season is so long the only relevance these games have is end of season ladder position. One thing you can do is look to trends either at team or player level but after one game not so much. I thought that THB against the Swans player with about 6 minutes to go that definitely decided the game was ridiculous. When the whistle blew I thought it was a free to the Swans player as the Hawks players jumped onto his head and back. With no football today this opening round is a fizzer even if no fault of the AFL
