The Concussion Crisis in Australian Rules Football
Diamond_Jim replied to Mazer Rackham's topic in Melbourne Demons
AFL statement has echos of those by the tobacco industry so long ago not to mention the asbestos industry, the anti depression drug industry...you name it. Strange that it appears in the NYT and doesn't appear to have been picked up by the Australian press. Also in the statement, Andrew Dillon, the league’s general counsel and general manager for game development, said, “The A.F.L. is committed to world-leading management of head trauma in sport.” “At every stage,” he added, “our decisions have been guided by research, and we have had a conservative approach, putting players’ health first.” -
GO GIANTS !!
-
Hard to believe that a club can be in the GF nine years after its inception and of course been in the finals for three years before. Out of interest who is credited with their now brilliant policy of draft young and trade. Looking at GCS and where they are you have to give it to them. West Coast won within seven years of entering the comp and Adelaide within six. Trying to see some positives from an MFC perspective but staring at the GC priority pick and their Darwin zone it's hard to see.

Our man Tomlinson has made the team !!! https://www.afl.com.au/news/2019-09-26/grand-final-teams-richmond-and-gws-locked-in

the failure to correctly diagnose his foot injury which was found in days if not minutes by the Richmond medicos is sadly reflective of this club. It's never been explained. Would it have been different if earlier diagnosed. Who knows.. probably not but we all know it was a major fail.

Guess the Oliver story..... I want to improve the kicking side of my game... Not sure re Gawn........perhaps holding him back for the captaincy announcement and the membership drive
-
Expect Dusty to be targeted. With our luck they'll use Tomlinson and he'll come over with a six match ban !!!!

GWS have been very physical with their starts over the final series. Could be a fiery first quarter
-
Could we have a repeat of the Alistair Lynch "massacre". Had not thought about that.
-
Well ... here it is ... are we excited... probably not Coniglio has ruled himself out which leaves spots to be found for Greene and possibly Whitfield. Richmond will be raging favourites and deserve to be. Do GWS have someone to stop Martin, Lynch and Riewoldt? Will Cameron do a Tredrea and sacrifice his game by playing upfield and allowing the likes of Finlayson to kick a bag? And of course how will the prospective Demon in Tomlinson fare?

Probably right LH wonder what the equivalent of a Visy ambassador is at Collingwood. As an aside American college footballers are not supposed to be paid but there is a network of rich/influential alumini known as "boosters" who they use to circumvent the rules.

List changes who do we cut, trade or go after.

tell me we didn't..........please -
if it's only dollars Pies will find the money Term is another issue

A 27 year old who has played 105 games in his career. Hope it's no more than a 3 year offer Why is he leaving Collingwood out of interest?
-
In reality Stretch is worth no more than a fourth round pick so it's not that tempting for GCS. If Billy can get a game up north he should go for it. With Maynard, JKH and Stretch gone our back up midfield starts to look thin though.

Collingwood = Whittlesea/Mernda

sadly that is the EPL these days .... hard to get off the merry go round. Bit like the AFL and the gambling coys but many times worse

maybe but you have to admit I have a point. We weren't even as good as Fitzroy with the Marseillaise (sacre bleu) who at least changed a lot of the words. You're a grand old flag You're a high-flying flag And forever in peace may you wave You're the emblem of The land I love The home of the free and the brave Ev'ry heart beats true Under red, white and blue Where there's never a boast or brag But should old acquaintance be forgot Keep your…

actually getting rid of the song would be a good move. It's a jingoistic American ditty about the stars and stripes written for a play called George Washington junior and made famous by George Cagney in Yankee Doodle Dandy. Almost cringeworthy when you think about it. Mind you most of the former VFL clubs suffer form the same problem but ours is particularly bad.
-
Interesting as I see the move to Gosch's as being exactly what you describe. In ten years the big teams will all have dedicated super facilities. What is a super facility...indoor training facility, two ovals one being MCG size the other convertible to match all other ovals, pools and gyms etc etc. Collingwood are on the lookout to move and Richmond cannot be far behind. Carlton is an interesting one as they have the Princes Park reserve but talk about resident issues !!!

I get upset if I don't get a whole section of stand to myself these days. Went to see Bombers play Port at Docklands. Had to sit beside someone.... very strange

yawn....... Is there any award show that isn't a yawn. Never could understand why people watched them. As a separate issue there is "the award" itself. It's nice but.......... Mind you the system is better than the MFC BnF

Yesterday the Storm played the Eels in a knock out second semi. The Storm have been in Melbourne for 30 years and have won 5 premierships (although two were taken away) and have been runners up on no less than four occasions. They have been wooden spooners once in 2010. AAMI stadium has a capacity of 30,050. Why after 30 years of sustained success couldn't the Storm fill AAMI stadium yesterday? For the same reason the Giants will go nowhere. The AFL interest that there was in Sydney which was never great has been well catered for by the Swans who have been in Sydney for 37 years. The quaint idea that you need two local teams to provide TV interest has never been a strong argument. In fact one city teams are the norm in most sports. In short GCS and GWS will never succeed in the way we think of success.
