  1. https://www.theage.com.au/sport/cricket/seven-and-cricket-australia-fight-over-broadcast-rights-expert-20201016-p565sl.html The Channel 7 v Cricket Australia arguments continue Next could be Nine v Tennis Australia Increasingly I am seeing reports of the magical vaccines not being available to health workers until mid 2021 which makes mass vaccination prior to September 2021 unlikely. It seems that while the trials are almost finished for the initial candidates the trial evaluation process will take around 6 months ?
  2. well done
  3. great article
  4. Gil has been CEO since 2014. I think he will be gone at the end of 2021 (volountarily pushed) as the game looks to recover and move on in the post covid world. Different skills are required in what will be a non expansionary market. It will be lead by the clubs who are now calling for the enquiry.
  5. spot on ... but it also underscores that the media money is heading down not up Foxtel might put up the money if they got the prime games and 7 got the crumbs
  6. On another thread we were ranking Goodwin against other coaches. Objectively he would have to be in the bottom four. These are the measures I used. Improving players Game day tactics Gameplan Team selection Player management Skill improvement Competition respect You could add other criteria but except for the "good bloke" factor which helps him in the area of player management he doesn't excel at at many if any of the others.
  7. Hi guys I'm a bit late for the Caulfield Cup but just wanted to wish you all a happy Spring Carnival. Amazed that we didn't sell the Melbourne Cup to Queensland like we did with everything else. What's the Cox Plate field looking like quality wise this year ?
  8. Channel 7 don't even pay for half of the media rights. "Seven is paying $840 million in cash and $60 million in contra for the rights, with Foxtel paying $1.3 billion and Telstra paying about a reported $300 million." https://www.ausleisure.com.au/news/afl-looks-to-extend-seven-network-broadcast-deal/
  9. yep... pity we haven't go a top ten coach
  10. If youth participation was a measure of success basketball would be the most popular sport in the country. Sydney has been in NSW now for nigh on fifty years and the market penetration has not been that great. Looking at it from the flipside can you really say that the Storm who has been the most successful team in the NRL for so many years has made major inroads into the average Melbournian's psyche. Dollar for dollar the northern state expansion clubs don't really stack up. BTW the biggest youth sport on the Gold Coast is probably Nippers
  11. go lions
  12. Storm have been the Raider's bunny in recent times so let's hope tonight is different
  13. It's growing... (strange for GWS to be calling for a review)that makes 6 clubs.... only three more required "Andrew Pridham's call for a comprehensive and independent review of Australian rules football from the structure of the AFL Commission to the game's grass roots has grown legs with club presidents across Australia throwing their support behind the Sydney chairman. In what is shaping as a test of the strength of the 18 clubs, Richmond, West Coast, Brisbane Lions, and Greater Western Sydney have joined Hawthorn's Jeff Kennett in backing Pridham. The Sydney chairman warned on Friday that the game was in danger of heading in the wrong direction beyond recovery unless it was prepared to undergo objective scrutiny for the first time in 27 years."...... While denying accusations from the AFL that his primary focus was a push to rationalise or relocate clubs, Pridham said the 18-club structure needed to be reviewed and recalled the Swans' historic and ultimately successful decision to leave South Melbourne back in 1982." https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/afl-2020-more-club-presidents-back-call-for-independent-review-of-the-afl-20201015-p565fl.html
  14. I would have picked most Demonlanders as impressionists rather than cubists. Life as an MFC supporter is much better if viewed through the mists of impressionism. After all Fuchsias and water lilies are very close.
  15. Not a bad outcome as it would give me a team to barrack for in the GF (anyone but Richmond) Let's face it a Port v Lions GF would be even more irrelevant than ever I'd be even happier with Port v Geelong for the purpose of removing the smile from condescending Queenslanders.
  16. JK has been gunning for the Commissioners for a while. He'd be happy to see Gil go. As you know the clubs agreed to the Commission concept when most of them were near broke. The power clubs are well set up now and they see little reason for the socialism practiced by the Commission. Reducing the number of clubs in Melbourne would be welcomed by SA and WA as they are convinced the competition is Melbourne centric. BTW Mergers don't necessarily have to be limited to another AFL club. I'd like to see the if there was a business case for a merger between the Storm and ourselves for example.
  17. If it was the NBA you might be right but why would those behemoths care about the additional subs they could get from AFL. The bidders are more likely the Phone companies Telstra and Optus to support their digital presence but at present they have only committed small money.
  18. No they wont Do the sums...AFL is a loss leader for Foxtel which has said that it won't pay more. The FTA channels are all making a loss.
  19. Show Replies do you really believe that ?? when the ninth game is GCS playing Freo?? Australia wide ratings 200k at most Half decent Youtubers get more views
  20. You hear that mantra discussed often but given the crowds of the second team in Sydney and Brisbane it doesn't really hold water. When the TV ratings for the second team are published they rarely score well. They also used to agrue that it got them media coverage but that is probably not borne out by reality either. Knowing a few Swans supporters in Sydney they have no interest whatsoever in GWS. One other point...big revenue growth in the next ten years will be in crowds and sponsorship not media money. Fewer teams the bigger the crowds between the surviving teams. PS...one good thing is that this has spelled the end of the China junkets
  21. I think they got rid of the pet memberships but I'll add another category... sponsor held memberships
  22. Hawthorn's revenue structure would take a decent hit if it were to lose the Tasmanian Government funding.
  23. North's assets are negligible unless you think you can sell the training facilities in Arden Street which are on Crown land with restricted use leases. Saints are in deep debt and 2020 would not have helped. Ideally 2 more clubs out of Melbourne ????? If however you get rid of Suns and GWS..... a 14 team comp seems to work nicely Mind you a 12 team comp allows a home and away between every team !!
  24. The Hawks IIRC were going to fund around 33% by debt, 33% foundation money (supporters) and 33% government money. Here's a 2015 article... couldn't find a newer one https://www.perthnow.com.au/sport/hawthorn-hawks/hawthorn-plan-to-relocate-to-dingley-debt-free-confident-it-wont-risk-financial-future-ng-397a3ad16c8c4692ff108ddfae5c6af2
