2020 Player Reviews: #10 Angus Brayshaw
Diamond_Jim replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Given we kept Viney I'm ready for a Brayshaw trade. Something has to give in that midfield before it functions correctly. Gus will demand very good money at the end of his contract (2022) and I just think it's better spent elsewhere. A very good outside mid is what we are screaming out for. -
In a successful team Charlie has the ability to be a really damaging forward link player who can score a goal. In our mediocre performances which are far too often he has little impact. Hoping Spartacus has a good year in 2021. His kicking distance seemed to improve in 2020. I can recall earlier years where he couldn't make the distance from 40 metres out.

6 foot flanker please
-
The 2018 draftees haven't exactly excelled. Sure there have been injuries etc but... 2021 will be their third year. You would hope one of them at least can cement a spot Tom Sparrow, James Jordon, Aaron Nietschke, Toby Bedford and Marty Hore
-
You could do that. It really doesn't matter where the two players are taken from as they are only in that position for a few seconds while the ball is being bounced in the centre. The real benefit is that it makes zoning etc just that little bit harder. Also it is not a fundamental rule change.
-
given that most positions are irrelevant in general play the question relates to post goal centre bounce. You would remove the wing as removing say the half forwards would only cause confusion as they are at opposite ends of the ground for the respective teams. You could also consider the centre and one wingman if you wanted to minimize congestion at a centre bounce. Two onballers might be too much. VFA had no wingmen for many years

Given the cost of VFL/ seconds comp that is the obvious place to try some more drastic changes. Team of 20 with say 40 interchange. Six games per year to be played with 16 on the field.

Excellent article in today's Age about Will Pucovski's development from a young age Good luck to him but reading these stories always me think of Graeme Hick. https://www.theage.com.au/sport/cricket/the-net-session-that-stamped-12-year-old-will-pucovski-as-a-future-star-20201110-p56d93.html By the time the 1986 season was out, the possibility of Hick's playing at Test level was being taken seriously, and the debate was shifting from whether he would play international cricket to which country he would represent. At the time, Zimbabwe seemed a long way from Test status, so he set himself instead to fulfil the residency requirements for England qualification, and despite an offer of a four-year qualification period from New Zealand he opted to take the longer path of a seven-year wait to play for his newly adopted home. By the time he became eligible, public interest in his seeming destiny as a great batsman for country as well as county was intense; David Lloyd was later to write that he doubted "any cricketer [had] ever come into the international game burdened by such impossible expectations".[32] Hick's Worcestershire teammate Graham Dilley had been in no doubt that he would succeed, perhaps ironically given what was to follow writing that Hick exerted "psychological pressure on the bowlers, like Viv Richards or Javed Miandad."[33] Hick's batting performance in Test matches Hick made his first appearances as an England batsman in a three-match One Day International series against West Indies, the first being played at Edgbaston on 23 May 1991. He made only 14 in a low-scoring game, but a few days later, in the third and final match of the series, he hit 86* and shared in a match-winning stand of 213 with Neil Fairbrother. The stage seemed set for Hick's Test debut at Headingley on 6 June, and Hick was even pictured on the cover of the Radio Times.[34] He was given a hero's reception by the crowd as he came out to bat, but a tortured 51 minutes later he was back in the pavilion having made only six, and he could do no better in the second innings. After further innings of 0, 43, 0, 19 and 1 he was dropped before the last match of the series. Although Worcestershire did win the Benson & Hedges Cup, in first-class cricket Hick finished with an average for the season of just 32.91, which remains his lowest in any English summer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graeme_Hick

Who Will We Dislodge from the 2020 Final Eight?
Diamond_Jim replied to Lucifers Hero's topic in Melbourne Demons
Other than Richmond and to a lesser extent West Coast you could make a case for any of those teams dropping from the 8. Port will benefit from two wins against Adelaide but will Brisbane split its wins with the Suns? Geelong's midfield are getting older. Can they go around again. Saints could easily do an MFC and drop to 17. Pies and Bulldogs...who knows MFC...not really seeing where the improvement on 2020 will come from. Our bottom 6-10 are very ordinary. -
Franklin's contract moved the goalposts by a massive margin. What looked like a stupid play was quickly lauded as a masterstroke due to increases in the salary cap(media deals). The AFL is a very small bubble and the mantra turned into its own echo chamber. Now that bubble has burst big time. Will clubs learn from it. Probably not as every bad decision can be justified at the time it is made. It's only hindsight that makes them look poor. MFC has made a few of its own.

Just sat down to watch the replay of today's Vic match to see the new wunderkind and he's out for his lowest score!! Timing is everything

Has two more years on his contract. Looking like one too many.

2020 Player Reviews: #20 Adam Tomlinson
Diamond_Jim replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Has not justified a four year contract. Underperformed for the Giants in the 2019 finals and was uninspiring for us in 2020. May plug a hole going forward but you have to wonder about his recruitment. -
He was killing it at Casey. Remember a game against Essendon at Windy Hill in 2018. Marked everything plus kicked a few goals. Good luck at GWS

Age running with a story that lists may be reduced by two and salary cuts of 10% according to briefing given to players by AFLPA https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/afl-lists-likely-to-be-cut-by-two-but-no-guarantees-following-meetings-20201110-p56dcx.html

surely there is someone who'll take him at a bargain price.
-
Goody will Fritsch him probably
-
Agree... add in Fritsch who plays tall and you have five... Mind you we haven't excelled at the Richmond style either
-
at $350k they might be happy to take a chance. Let's face it he's now a fringe project player at best.
-
My reasoning is that he sits behind Weid, Ben Brown and Jackson at MFC as far as forwards go plus arguably Fritsch. Similarly no room in the backline and his game style even when fit probably doesn't suit the present gameplan. In another team he might not have as many players in front of him. North for example. Still haven't heard anyone mention the contract term for Ben Brown. At $550k a year sounds good but hopefully only three years.

Interesting but inconclusive article on third party candidates in US presidential elections. I'm sure many are crunching the numbers for running a spoiler candidate in 2024 https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/nov/08/libertarian-jo-jorgensen-donald-trump-joe-biden A Black lives matter candidate would have easily taken 5% off Biden for example. I'm sure there are other single issue parties one could come up with that would cause absolute havoc. One thing holding them back are the campaign contribution laws that favour the mass parties.

Barely a pass but not all his fault given the reluctance of Goodwin to select him in the first part of the season. Has to deliver in 2021. Contracted until the end of 2021. Negotiations could be interesting.
-
He's only punting 200k of his own money that he continues his career under my formula. he still gets $1.2Modd and a chance to get one more contract. Stay at Melbourne and he most likely plays at Casey in 2021
